The Buried Age is down to $0.99 on US Amazon now. The first wave of Lost Era books were the first Trek books that I actively sought out in stores as they were released, so I have a lot of nostalgia for them. Will be interesting to reread them and see how they hold up. For now I’m reading One Constant Star, which is new to me, and the first Trek book I’ve read in years.
Are Catalyst of Sorrows, Deny Thy Father, Well of Souls and One Constant Star worth reading? I've read the other TLE books, but those four.
“One Constant Star” is a good book. Haven’t read the others on your list. Just picked up the others. Ninety-nine cents is too good to pass up, even if they blow.
Out of the three of the original six on your list, the only one I didn’t care for was Deny Thy Father. As @Thrawn mentioned upthread, though, Well of Souls was quite polarizing. It might be one that you’ll just have to try it and see what you think... while being prepared to hate it if that’s the camp you fall into. On the plus side though, much better to give it a chance at 99 cents, rather than full price!
Quick thoughts: Catalyst of Sorrows is great. Deny Thy Father gets a lot of undeserved criticism. It's worth checking out, especially if you are a fan of Riker, his father, and/or Pulaski. Well of Souls feels like such a missed opportunity. Bick had the whole Enterprise-C era to work with, and we got such a disappointing, negative book out of it. I looked at One Constant Star in a bookstore and was not inspired to read the whole thing.
I remember how I felt about the original 6 Lost Era books was 3 were great, 2 were pretty good and 1, Deny Thy Father, didn't work for me. I mean it's worth a dollar, I just liked the others a lot better. Buried Age was pretty close to the great category but I'm not sure it made and One Constant Star was in the pretty good category. I might as well talk about the Terok Nor books since they are Lost Era books even though they are not on sale. Day of Vipers was a freaking masterpiece. The other 2 are between good and great. All in all I think the Lost Era series has one of the highest averages for how much I liked the books.

So happy to snag The Left Hand of Destiny books. All we need now is for Unity and Rising Son to go on sale, and all of the "Golden Era" relaunch titles (i.e., anything up to and including Warpath) will have been made available through these sales over the years. I wish we could've had another ten years of that series as it was being laid out; it'll probably always be my favorite run of Trek novels. The Romulan War also never took on the form it should've. I prefer Mangels & Martin as a team over either author's solo ventures - they complemented each other very well - but I thought Beneath the Raptor's Wing did a lot of extremely interesting and ambitious stuff, and even its missteps hinted in a positive direction. I was excited for In Shariel's Jaws, then saddened when I heard it had been cut to a duology. But To Brave the Storm had extremely pretty artwork (I'm shallow, I guess), and I remember it beginning decently. But I also remember it taking a serious nosedive about 1/3rd of the way in - almost as though the book had been taken away from the author, and someone else had needed to come in and connect enough dots to finish the manuscript. I'm sure that isn't what happened, but I'm also sure that whatever Martin originally laid out should've turned out better than what we received. I've never gotten around to The Brave and the Bold; I assume it's an enjoyable read? It's been years since I read Infiltrator, but I seem to remember it being decent by numbered-novel standards?
It appears that the situation is that various people in charge felt like there was a chance that the line would end in 2012 and be taken up by another publisher, so the editor commissioned various books to finish all the open storylines. Vanguard finished, Typhon Pact finished, Janeway returned on Voyager, and David Mack's trilogy was originally going to end with Picard's death. Except then the license was renewed, so Cold Equations books 2 and 3 changed completely, and The Fall resumed the ongoing story. The Romulan War was caught up in that - he finished off the story quickly so that it would be done. (I'm about 95% sure this is all correct.)
I know you can't separate business realities from how Trek novels get published, but man - imagine a twenty-year stretch where the recession didn't decimate publishing, all of the various licensing deals stayed stable, and people weren't getting pushed out for one reason or another. As lucky as we are to have gotten the books we have, we've missed out on so much thanks to this stuff...
For sure, Vanguard's finale had nothing to do with the licensing issue. Dave, Kevin, and I first discussed wrapping up the series at Shore Leave in July 2009. I still have the email string which evolved out of that as we eventually relented to Pocket's desire for an additional book (which became Declassified) even as we began plotting the two-part finale storyline later that year.
