Not just here, but there is a lot of comparison to Marvel in regards to the way they put their movies out and how Star Wars has, per some, failed. But, I think it requires some reminding that Marvel started out slowly with their releases. Starting in 2008, there were six movies over five years (if you include Universal's The Incredible Hulk in the equation). And Phase Two moved into the two movies a year category, releasing six movies over three years.

But Star Wars is different. I admit wholeheartedly that a part of what makes Star Wars special is lost by the increased release schedule of the films. It was something else when a new Star Wars came out, because they were so few and far between. I was born in late 1979 so while I did see Return of the Jedi in the theaters, I don't know that I understood that at the time. And say what you will about the prequels but having the big gap between Jedi and The Phantom Menace made what is considered now by many to be a mediocre entry in the saga to be something really special. I remember being in college and downloading the first Episode I trailer overnight on dial-up from my dorm room. I had to see it right then and there. I remember having a positive opinion coming out of Episode I for the first time and then I kind of bought into the hate until right before The Force Awakens came out and I watched it again and I realized, "This isn't that bad." The next two, in my opinion, left a little to be desired, but TPM was a good story with a flawed way of telling it.

I think its telling that Bob Iger is suggesting Disney "might’ve put a little bit too much in the marketplace too fast.” I think its also telling that they've slowed down. They realize that what they have is something a little more special than releasing two or three movies a year. So this idea that Disney Star Wars is a failure because Solo failed to do gangbusters at the box office? Well, one movie doesn't make a franchise failure, particularly if that franchise has made $4.8 billion over the four movies that have been released since Disney bought LFL. And no, box office does not equal quality, but it does show audience interest and that, to the studio fronting the bill is the most important thing. There's something to remember that not everyone who bought a ticket to The Force Awakens or Rogue One or The Last Jedi were as obsessive about Star Wars as we are. Not everyone talks about it on the internet. Not everyone reads blogs and watches vlogs about it. Not everyone reads the books and comics and discuss this stuff ad nauseum. They want to go see a movie. "Hey, look, the new Star Wars is out!" "Is it supposed to be any good?" "I don't know. But let's go!" They watch it. They like it or not. And they move on with their lives. That is what is special about Star Wars. Its accessible! People across demographics can share in the mythological tales that have been entertaining for over 40 years but are rooted in stories that are timeless.

Yeah, I think Disney is recognizing that industry analysts (not YouTube commentators) are suggesting that franchise fatigue plays a part in this. Not one movie in particular, but a slew of too much, too fast. I think that's fair. But I don't think its suggesting by any stretch of the imagination that the backlash for The Last Jedi was the only reason Solo failed. There's been a slew of reasons that have led to it including: bad word of mouth, too many blockbusters in the cinema and the aforementioned franchise fatigue. Plus was Solo a film anyone really asked for? Did it break any kind of new ground? Were people maybe burned by the last Star Wars Story with Rogue One? Sure, a lot of fans loved that one, but what about the average movie goer? It was different tonally than anything from Star Wars before.

Ultimately, and I have been very forward with my feelings in this matter, I believe there has been too much too quick with Star Wars. I think that having Johnson work on The Last Jedi while The Force Awakens maybe caused some issues that could have been better resolved with another year. And I think the Anthology films would have all been better suited on a streaming service from the get-go. I think moving Obi-Wan from the big screen to Disney+ is the smartest thing they could do. The Mandalorian looks very different (in a good way) and even though I wasn't overly fond of Rogue One, I liked Cassian and K-2SO and am interested in seeing what they can do with the series. Waiting three years between The Rise of Skywalker and whatever is next is actually a good thing in my opinion. It allows some creative space to be able to develop the future of this franchise and take it in the direction it needs to go and hopefully make it special again.

For me, yeah, in some form or fashion, I've enjoyed every Star Wars film I've seen. But none of them have been perfect. But I had fun! And that is the most important thing I've taken from this saga.

So, I am cautiously optimistic for the future of Star Wars. And for the last time, no, that does not make me naive.

The video may be pro Disney, but who made the video? Who are they to share their opinions. How knowledgeable are they of WDW's daily operations and seasonal operations? And a video with the description about an alleged change does not inspire confidence that they know what they are talking about. I do know some Disney vloggers that have a solid reputation (and proven track record) and not one of them has been saying that GE has underperformed. They have been saying that the parks have underperformed this season because the opening of GE scared people away. I'll take their opinion over some random vlogger who happens to agree with you. A YouTube video is only as credible as the person making it.

That's an important point that some people are ignoring, the comparison between how Galaxy's Edge is doing and how the rest of the parks are doing. If attendance at all of the parks is down overall, then it makes sense that GE's attendance might now be as high as people were hoping. Now if attendance at all of the other parks was up or steady, but GE was below them, then that could be a cause for concern.

Everyone knows that the parks are currently under performing. It's not a secret, a scoop or a revelation. Disney has admitted, everyone has been talking about it.

It's a complex situation without a single factor. There are many factors as to why this is currently the case. It's very likely GE is a contributing factor, if only in that people were worried about crowds, so they ironically stayed away. Or they are postponing their visit the second ride opens.

But those are really the only ways GE could be a factor (well, not including the price hikes that aren't specifically GE's fault.) Even if some people don't like it, that's something you only learn AFTER you've gone.

But, of course, people with agendas are happy to seize upon this fact to promote all kinds of pet theories about the "rejection" of Disney SW or the "failure" of the park or whatever fits their narrative, regardless of the facts.

GE also has expanded the real estate and the available number of attractions at each of its parks. So, even if the numbers were exactly constant from last year, the park(s) would FEEL less crowded because there's literally more to do and more space for those crowds to diffuse to. If you put 15 people in one room, it feels a lot more crowded than if you put 15 people into five rooms.

Nobody's saying that you have to enjoy or be positive about the new movies, just that it's generally considered good form to actually have your facts straight.

Also, if we're taking random Youtube videos into account, here are a couple of good ones.

No, I'm not posting these as a substitute for an argument, and no I don't particularly care if nobody watches them.

quick question: which side has a harder time understanding the other side?

Do people who disliked TLJ have a hard time understanding why some people loved it?

Or do the people who loved TLJ have a harder time understanding why some people disliked it?

    Ooh...ooh...I can play too!

I think its this one. I think that the people who are bothered by it cannot genuinely understand those who like, since the ST or TLJ is bad Star Wars, or terrible storytelling, or ruins the OT, or whatnot. The language is often couched in hyperbole, making even the most ardent defenders appears as those they are completely against everything Star Wars.

I'm not saying defenders can't be this virulent, but I see far more of the "ruined Star Wars" camp on various sites than "greatest SW movie eva!!!!!!!!!!!!"

What's your point here, exactly? That Disney is shamelessly promoting their park with events in corporate owned media?

Yeah, no shit. Disney has been shamelessly promoting itself for 70 years. Walt himself used to host "specials" on ABC that were nothing but extended advertisements for Disneyland.

No one is surprised by this, icky though it may be. Disney's gonna Disney.

So you are just going to swallow what Iger says... huh?

what about this: “I just think that we might’ve put a little bit too much in the marketplace too fast,” Iger said about the response to “Star Wars” under Disney. “I think the storytelling capabilities of the company are endless because of the talent we have at the company, and the talent we have at the company is better than it’s ever been, in part because of the influx of people from Fox.”

Fox acquisition was so recent Bob, and it has nothing to do with Disney SW. And people would be on board with Disney Disney SW if they liked the stories !!!

Some people are on board. Some people are not. Star Wars fandom is not a monolithic mass and shouldn't be treated as such.

Of course Disney needs to advertise, but the parks just opened, and they have literally no momentum, that tehya re going to now push them on every tv network including CNN? Really.. Sure they CAN do it, but the need to to do it is baffling as the parks just opened, as a new show and the final episode of the movie series is coming out, and yet the buzz is so dismal that they need to spend all this money to create buzz in markets .. when their problem could have been solved by creating better content?

How is it baffling that a new park is being advertised? The show and the movie don't tell anyone that a new park exists. That's what park advertising is for.

You can be a fan.. but to be this purposefully naive is another thing altogether. Iger said back in February: “We’re going to have absolutely no problem getting attention… It’s not going to take much marketing to do that.”
Fast forward to NOw, when they are cross promoting on every channel they have even ESPN. I mean they CAN do it.. I'm not arguing that they can.. I'm not even arguing that they shouldn or should not. It just seems that all that hubris from his mouth was a bit premature and now he is eating crow thanks to mismanaging this brand

    Link doesn't work in Europe.

Or he just made a stupid comment when trying to impress investors which the company was never seriously going to follow up on. Literally the very first article I could find mentioning this story (and you'd like this article because it said GE wouldn't be a success all the way back in february) immediately noted that Iger's comment was wildly uncharacteristic for Disney who are widely known for promoting the shit out of every new product, period.

They are allowed to change their minds, according to the market. That's not mismanaging-that's business.

Sure.. but you'd think that a DISNEY THEME PARK JUST OPENED.. A NEW SHOW IS COMING OUT, A NEW MOVIE THAT IS THE CULMINATION OF THE WHOLE FRANCHISE IS COMING OUT, and, with what the CEO said... the fact is SW is sluggish right now, the buzz ain't up to snuff. Just saying. You can believe what you want.
