This was a cool moment before the Giants-Red Sox game. It's a shame Carl Jr. isn't still with us.

They are a fantastic team, loaded from top to bottom.
The A's could conceivably win 100 games... and finish 7-8 games behind the 'Stros.
The AL could have 3 teams with 100+ wins 2 teams with 90 wins, but also have 3 teams with 100 losses and as many as 5 teams with 90+ losses.

    Competitive balance?

Wow. Anthony Rizzo returned to the Cubs lineup last night, and hit a homer. Unfortunately the bullpen blew another extra inning game. We're now outside of playoff contention again.

This kind of shit is exactly why you don't keep a manager hanging onto his job by a thread; the Mets did the same thing with Collins, which resulted in him wrecking the arms of Harvey, Wheeler and Matz because he was desperate to keep his role. Rizzo will probably go right back onto the IL if the Cubs lose this series with the Cardinals, and it was moronic of Maddon to rush him into the lineup when the Cubs' most realistic outlook is losing the play-in game.

Also, Baez was a pinch runner last night. Don't these guys have to be on the active roster after a certain point to be post-season eligible?

Still, it wouldn't surprise me if Rizzo wanted back in. I know Javy has probably been badgering everybody to get back in.

As long as you're on the 40-man roster or on the 60-day IL as of August 31, you're postseason-eligible.

The Padres have sacked manager Andy Green, because ... a managerial change when you're 30 games out with a week left to go in the season makes perfect sense?

History repeats itself. The Padres fired Greg Ridoch late in the 1992 season and replaced with Jim Riggleman.

Now the Cubs are most likely done. 5th straight loss at Wrigley. Kimbrel comes in with a 1 run lead and gives up b2b HR's on 2 pitches. Then Joe puts Baez in to PH in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and what do ya think happened?

They aren't going to fire Epstein, so Joe rightly needs to go along with the rest of the coaching staff. You could see Joe's schtick got old pretty quickly after the WS win and they've gravitated a little more towards mediocrity each season.

His oddball style only worked in the beginning because it was different, but now they just aren't listening to him or the coaches. New batting & pitching coaches the last 3 years hasn't helped either.

After tonight we'll be 6 back in the division and 4 back for the 2nd WC spot.

Stick a fork in Kimbrel. He's done.

Maybe if he hadn't sat out half the season for money...

I'm sure @Timby will be in at some point to tell you how that was part of an MLB collusion case. Either way, the Cubs signed another guy on the serious back end of his career for way too much money. Epstein really doesn't have a clue when it comes to pitchers, even forgetting the Heyward signing.

I figure our "window" is all but closed. I think a bunch of our best guys are at the end of their contracts.

He’s thinking about the Padres, whose fanbase thinks he can take them to the promise land.

Need I remind you that each offseason, MLB sends a pro wrestling-style championship belt to the front office that is most successful in holding down salary increases in arbitration?

I'm pretty sure he's serious. Teams are businesses after all, and the MLB is a multi billion dollar brand.

Guys should get paid, but I do think some of them are grossly overpaid too.

I used to think that. Then I think about owners who squeeze every last dollar out of cities, fans, broadcasters, and merchandising partners.
