Spidey OUT of MCU

This GIF made no sense the first time it got posted here, and still doesn't make sense because there's actually substance to this discussion and debate about the story direction that has been taken with Tom Holland's Spidey thus far.

 

He didn't. In fact, he was so intensely independent that the one person one could ever say he "looked up to" or admired was Captain Stacy, but he was not sitting around being a glorified fanboy of other superheroes, even those he was somewhat friendly with. Yet another reason MCU Spidey-Lad was far removed from the heart of the character's source.

Agreed.

 

The GIF is for instances when arguments become repetitive without getting closer to a resolution, especially when resolution is impossible, as it comes down to taste. @Anwar was triggered by other users criticizing a movie in his holiest of holy MCU, and as usual he reacted not with a reasonable response based on the matters of the criticism, but by shitting on BvS and thus trying to start another round of MCU vs DC movies that will just regurgitate the same old personal-taste-thinnly-disguised-as-objective-arguments again. We've had this rodeo again and again for years now, and I'm calling it out so we can have actual debates with actual arguments that actually lead somewhere.

 

It at least IS a change that other stories have never bothered pursuing or exploring. Same with the idea that instead of always worrying about the Bills, Peter and May could've saved themselves trouble by living in a smaller home more suited to their needs. In fact, in Spider-Man 2 that's exactly what May DID and she never worried about money after that.

 

OK, Peter admiring Tony might not have come from the comics, but all of these movies have always added things like that. And I'd put the secret identity thing down to the MCU just not really emphasizing that aspect of the characters.
I really don't understand why some people have such a problem with Pete admiring Tony, he's a science nerd, and Tony Stark is the big superstar scientist of the MCU, so it makes perfect sense that he'd admire him.

 

But he didn’t act that way around Reed Richards when he was a teen in the comics. I get this is a different incarnation, but it’s one that feels off to me.

 

I don't really see why it's such a problem. They've made just as big or even bigger changes to other characters, but people don't seem to have anywhere near as much as a problem with them. I thought I had a pretty good feel for the character of Spider-Man, but I guess I must be missing something pretty significant here.

 

I quite like Tom Holland and this Spider-Man, I liked his participation in the MCU and I really like his father/son arch with Tony Stark. But... I think it's okay that it's over.
Spider-Man has a huge catalogue of lore to play with, as Into the Spider-Verse showed off extremely well, and can carry itself very easily without the help of the MCU.
More than that, the arch between Peter and Tony concluded effectively enough in Far From Home, I just hope Tony doesn't get deleted out of Peter's life.

 

Those so-called "contrived idiocies" are the basis of some of the finest Silver and Bronze Age comics ever to come out of Marvel.

Agreed. Of the three versions I've seen, the Raimi version is closest to the comics I grew up reading.

Now, to be fair to the latest iteration, I actually like Holland's version. I don't mind that it's not in sync with the comics I remember (I can always go back to the Raimi set for that) and I enjoy the differences (much as I enjoy Man of Steel for its differences from the "classic version"--sorry, Kai. Couldn't resist ).

The great thing about comic book movies (and movies more generally) is that one is free to enjoy what one wishes and also free to ignore and skip what one does not enjoy. They need not inspire vitriolic arguments (they're comic book movies, not weapons of mass destruction).

In any case, I have all nine (soon to be ten) live-action cinematic portrayals of Spider-Man on my shelf, as well as the recent animated film (which I've not yet seen, sadly) and I enjoy all of them (to varying degrees, but each provides me with entertainment--I presume the same will apply to the animated one). Maybe we'd all have a better time picking the one we like best and watching it rather than trying to "persuade" anyone that our favourite is "clearly better" than another's.

Nah. Who am I kidding? This is the Internet.

 

I don’t really see the big deal of this. All of the good Avengers are gone and he’s more of a solo character anyway. At least they can stop that annoying “Iron Man sidekick” subplot.

 

I'm starting to think some people on here might need to look up the definition of sidekick.

 

Prodigy Then. Most sidekicks lead to that.

 

I don't know if I'd really call him a prodigy either. He was Tony's protege, but that was about it.

Yes, and anyone who even has a remote understanding of the impact of those historic Silver/Bronze Age stories would never deny how incredibly instrumental in making Marvel...the Marvel of its creative/historic height, not the erratic garbage of recent periods, which are not seen as classic or just great by comic readers and/or historians.

Same here. There were many instances in the Raimi films where scenes were nearly identical to the comics. He really did have a firm grasp on that character and it's why I've found each subsequent reboot lacking.

 

So, rumors have it that Sony may be up for a buy out by Apple or Amazon and that’s why Marvel didn’t pursue a new deal further as they would regain full rights for Spidey for free in that case.

 

Rumors aside, we've still never seen any actual definitive evidence that Sony being bought out would cause the rights to revert in the first place.

 

No credible source has called Sony's future into question.
