Fair enough. But the reactions of IP holders have been different, and the level of activity is different, meaning that there are issues that need to be weighed in order to generalize across both ST and SW fan films and to make the topic relevant to our discussion.

Axamonitor has an article by Jody Wheeler that compares and contrasts the ST fan film guidelines and SW fan film license. The article itself doesn't appear to be dated, and I'm not expert enough to know how up-to-date it is. Perhaps @carlosp could comment?

There are significant differences in the way crowd funding is handled. Apparently, Lucasfilm has issued statements that make crowd funding totally forbidden, which would, I presume, mean that the project linked to by @motorhead is unsanctioned.

 

To their credit they have been updating quite often on facebook including a post just yesturday. And while I agree it is taking way longer then it should it does appear they are actually working on it.

turns into "you're charged with aid to attempted ip fraud und we'll send you to federal prison". that's exactly how it goes, just ask jespah . no seriously. i have no clue about "the biz" but they might have issues getting a job with certain employers then i would think. would you warn them if that was the case? also that kind of fallout might impact lots of fan projects.
i mention this, because the sw fan film guidlines specifically say:
“Submissions may not be used to advertise Contestant’s or any third party’s product or services.”[SIZE=6][/SIZE]
And now your creation doesn't follow any of these rules, isn't even submitted and it's exactly what you're doing: advertising yourself. While probably misplaced here, Axanar is the "precedent" i'm most familiar with.

Interlude is a Star Trek fan film. Unless you think about it as an axanar fan film. in which case. i don't know.

I have read the post you cited, and neither of them are about what I am owed from any of you. Quite the opposite: They're about what you demand of me in spite of the fact that I know from experience that my posts might not merely be ignored, but attacked. At best, one might conclude that my posts imply that you "owe it to the forum to save it", which isn't really true. Should have checked the Facebook link. Their last post was yesterday. Apparently they have two separate composers working on music. That suggests they're well into post production. However, I can see why you're concerned. They do seem to be taking the Renegades route, and that didn't work out so well for Star Trek: Renegades

my mistake, i thought it was about new fan projects in general, but it referred to specific threads here.

one might argue that this is a bit like sending you to the comment section of a youtube video or the planning department on alpha centauri to find the reply to your question. and even if you do... i can't make out anything. I'm a simple person.

That's interesting, i have no idea about film making. Does this mean filming should essentially be done? Because I haven't been able to determine if they were able to film everything they needed. In every other business, for every service and product that exists there is a time component to it. And i can really only make out two exceptions it seems. The first being "Games as a Service" - where you buy a computer game that has a (marginal but mandatory) online component and you're at it's provider's mercy if they're going to keep the servers online for a day or a century after your purchase and you can use your product or not... and... "fan films"? When they do roadworks here, they put up a sign, saying WHEN they're doing it and how much it'll cost. And i think that would be a great starting place for any project. Yeah i know, there's volunteers, and the weather, and all kinds of factors, but you'd come up with a ballpark, right? could you nail the estimated completion down to a specific decade at least, as opposed to... you know? Or am i asking too much here?

damn. so you're telling me a bunch of kids could do what ~ 2M USD could not. awesome. the only issues i have with it are the same that i have with every modern production since about the 90s (audio levels and some too-much-text-for-an-actor-per-scene, i call it "gilmore girls syndrome")

except there's one problem of course that slipped through the axanar QA:
these clearly aren't italian boots. lane will be shocked.

 

Well, I definitely agree that they should update their Kickstarter more often, but one extra link isn't that bad.

Well, I'm guessing based on what I know about film production, but usually, if you're recording music to be in sync with what's going to be on screen, you typically have to have at least a rough edit of the scenes you want to record for, which suggests post production. And they say they're working with two composers. Combine that with the Facebook post that says "That's a wrap on Block 3!" back on June 3rd, and I think it's a pretty safe bet that they have at least enough footage filmed and edited to complete entire sequences of the film.

But yeah, it's a little vague. I think their bottleneck might be visual effects, as they have a post about recruiting volunteers from some kind of VFX academy.

How about "Early Access" games, where you pay to play an unfinished game and hopefully they finish it one day?

Good question. Clearly, there are examples of movies that were rushed into theaters to the detriment. (I can provide examples, if you mustache.) However, we do see a lot of situations where fan film productions do a poor job of keeping their supporters in the loop. Do you have any suggestions on how this could be improved? Should fan productions post mandatory weekly updates? Should they need to post monthly financial statements? Should they take polls of their contributors about whether they should release on time but sacrificing quality versus the best version of the film at a later date?

 

I've seen that, but i have no idea if films usually (or this film to be precise) consist of 3 or 452 blocks, so i have no reference regarding the progress.

they might be cheap and unfinished, but they exist, so i wouldnt count them. i buy them, i get access. even apparently huge crowdfunding debacles like "Star Citizen". You can buy it, install it, log in and play. Unlike things that never existed or - poof - vanish.

they (can) do whatever they want, but i'd try to not look shady if i was involved in such a project and handled people's money. also, i think, as the project creator, you're not allowed to complain anymore if you did it anyway and people point these details out.

that's the beauty when you never even give a time in the first place. buuuut, it's also a bit axanarish in the sense that i think, to the casual observer nowadays, it looks like "Prelude" IS "Axanar", just like at some point their trailer probably might look like it is the whole project. Facebook also says "Release Date: 2018" in the "About section", so... The creator spent some time on axamonitor explaining how much the project isn't like Axanar. hope that holds. i also hope they don't get sued. and i talk way too much. that's all. sorry. thanks.

In the meantime, to be absolutely real: Most fan films are not good. It's just a fact. There's stuff to enjoy, and stuff to cringe at.

All this other stupid peripheral bullshit is meaningless and in my opinion could be deleted and it would never be missed.

I just don't donate money. I trust my instincts on Axanar and that has colored other productions for me.

However, having worked on several fan films that tapered off. What I learned came from personal experience. One, ambition always outstrips talent, either in the CG department, costuming and always in the acting. Two, it always takes more time to do things. Three, have fun with it. If it is miserable doing it then don't bother. I got up at 4 AM and shot a lightsaber duel with 7 friends. It was awesome and fun. Never got further than that. That's the nature of it all.
