Yeah, lots of threads don't get interest for plenty of reasons, it's not some bizarre conspiracy. I guess most of us aren't much concerned with finding solutions to non-existent problems.

I did want to address the thing about this group ganging up on newcomers. I do agree that sometimes that does happen however I also think one of the reasons that happens is because LFIM's crew is often pulling that stunt on many groups (especially on facebook) where some new member will come in and say "hey.. look at this cool fan film I just found. Anybody seen this?" and post a link to prelude. most of the time it isnt' a new person but LFIM or one of his minions. In fact, just yesturday in a Picard group somebody (new member again) posted a "I'm happy that Axanar is fixing to start filming. who is with me?".

So the number of times that LFIM's minions create new accounts and users to pretend to be somebody new who just sumbled onto this make me very sceptical of new people. Some of them may actually be new and I do apologize for them but the "hey I'm new" tactic has just need used way too much. You see it on here also with ME and their cohorts too... "hey.. look at this video that just popped up without me doing anything on my youtube reccomended link. anybody heard anything about this report that Kurtzman is really a giant space alien sent to earth on a mission to destroy the star trek franchise?" It gets old and it does make one cynical over time.

This is the case in every forum I have ever been on. Many, many topics go nowhere. Others are good for maybe a page. And then others go on and on and on.

Stats reveal weirdness more than anything else.

On a general forums site which I manage (it goes back to 2002), on the first page of all-time popular topics (there are 25 topics listed/page), 5 have over a million views (3 of those have over 2 million). The most-viewed topic is about a game called Neo Pets. It dates to 2004; its last reply is from 2015. And there are 9 with over 10,000 replies. The one with the most responses, over 73,000, is about Trump and it was started in 2016. Its most recent reply was this morning, and it's got about 1.8 million views. And keep in mind, these are sorted by vote up/vote down so there may be other topics with more views or replies but that should give you and idea.

Two of the topics on that page are about furniture design. 3 are about games (including the Neo Pets one). 10 are social in various ways. 2 are political (the aforementioned Trump topic, and a topic on President Obama that has over 2 million views). There are a couple on philosophy. 1 is on Latin translations for tattoos (God bless George, who does them all). 1 is a rap battle with over 1.6 million views. Only 7 topics have a post less than a week old.

Anyway, the point I'm making is you never know what'll take off. People have odd habits at the best of times. Politics tends to be popular. And these games topics tend to attract kids and they vote storm. The social stuff builds over time; a lot of them are old. But then there's furniture design. And then on the unpopular side, those are mainly about linguistics or homework. They get no responses and maybe 10 people peek before voting them down.

This is how the internet works.

I'd also suggest that coming into any forum and being all Cartman "respect my AUTHORITAH" is not the best way to get a warm reception.

Disruptive innovation in the wrong hands can be a dangerous thing.
The rule once stated, "Build a better mouse trap and the world will come knocking at your door." With internet marketing it's become, "Build a better Rat and become the trending topic of the internet."
The net is divisive, dividers spark attention and somehow attention is mistaken for popularity.

It becomes all about clicks which leads to sensational headlines to get those clicks which may or may not acrtually be represenative of the content the headline is about.... and if somebody questions the headline the answer is always "well did you watch the actual video or read the article. You can't complain if you didn't read/watch since you don't know what was actually said" which is just another way to try to get more clicks. It's a vicious circle.

You seem to have created a straw man of me while simultaneously proving the straw man's point. Fascinating.
My point was never that you had to reply to my topics. The point was that the people who currently frequent this forum are openly hostile to new topics in general and those that would post them, and are unwilling to start any constructive topics of their own.
I think that's the most honest thing anyone's said in this forum in a long time. This actually explains a lot about the current mentality of the forum.
Really? Because I've mentioned several times that I was just giving the topic as an example, yet you keep bringing it up.
It's not about one topic, or even my preferred topics. It's about the complete lack of will in this forum to take part in any discussions about making fan films in the post-Axanar-lawsuit era.
It's everyone's fault. The people in this thread have generated thousands of messages since the Guidelines came out. If even a fraction of that effort had gone to furthering the purpose of this forum, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Well, how about discussions on how to edit down the size of your script to fit either 15 or 30 minutes? Or perhaps a discussion of the type of three act structure commonly used in short films? Or discussions about how to reduce the cost of sets, costumes and props while still presenting a good-looking, convincing fan film? Or how to contact other people to share things like costumes and props? Or how to do low-budget virtual sets? Or even one of the other topics I mentioned previously in this thread? There's no shortage of ways to improve fan production and help new fan film makers.
If anyone had to be either of those things to have an opinion, the Internet would shrivel up and die.
However, writing poetry doesn't make you a good novelist by default either. Certainly, there's some overlap in the skill sets of poets and novelists, just as athletes in different sports may have similarities in their diets and training. However, a poet can only become a good novelist by practicing the art of writing novels, just as a basketball player can't become a good baseball player without a lot of practice at baseball. You can be both, but you have to put in the effort for both.
You're describing a Siege Mentailty. Some quick Googling yields the article "How to Break Free from a Siege Mentality". Here's an excerpt:

It's funny, because I thought you actually wanted to talk about it.

    It's not will, its interest.

    m'k.

Jesus, fuck. Why don't you start those topics then? If you spent less time complaining about something not being done and actually DOING the thing, then maybe those threads would exist.

Like, seriously, what is stopping you from starting ANY of those threads?

Point missed. But, that's ok. So, you're going to start those threads you wish were there or just keep complaining about it? I mean, I guess we could keep derailing the thread so we can talk about your needs...

Edited to add: the quote about siege mentality is tots ironic... you have the option of starting the threads you are complaining don't exist.

What about them? I've had the Fan Filmmaker's Primer and the Fan Film Writer's Primer topics going on this board for years, and asked people what they would like to talk about or what would be helpful. In the wake of the Guidelines and people bemoaning the runtime limits I started the Fan FIlmmaker's Reference Vault to illustrate that you can make short compelling films. So there are places and topics for this kind of discussion, but not that many active filmmakers here any more.

It's frustrating, yes, but you're the one here acting out this so-called siege mentality.

As everyone else has already stated in one way or another - there are more suitable places to start a discussion on the future of fan films. This particular thread however is not it. Further, none of the active/semi-active contributors here (save for 1-2) have any sort of stake in the creation of such.

You want to be more productive? Find where the people from 'Continues' or one of the many other fan projects hang out and start talking with them.

Continue pissing and moaning ad nauseum in this thread isn't going to do anyone or any cause any sort of good.
