It worked for SG1, it got better after the man-child that was O'Neill left and Mitchell took over.

If the series had continued for few more years we would have avoided the weak movies and perhaps gotten something better instead.

On the other hand 'All Good Things...' was near perfect final episode.

Could a Trek series survive like a Law & Order series? Cast and crew changes as people get promoted, die or leave for personal reasons. Just keep churning the roster.

When that happens I think even among the fans who keep watching it, it tends to not remain their favorite show of its kind.

Fun fact: Nana Visitor tried to audition for the role of Janeway, even while playing Kira on DS9.

Quite frankly some of the episodes from TNG's last season already appear like VOY scripts with too much technobabble solutions going on. In this regard VOY picked right up where TNG ended.

Mitchell was wooden AF and Vala was so over the top it wore down suspension of disbelief.

They never really found a new chemistry and the villains had double the camp factor of the gu’ald without the humor or the cool ground battles. They basically spent the last four seasons including those two hunting for the next magic ancient artifact.

    I feel like:
    1) Stewart & Spiner would have gone, and they would have negotiated hard with the others, probably losing one or two more. I'm assuming Frakes, Sirtis and maybe Dorn would have stayed, not so sure about Burton & McFadden.
    2) The writing team for "TNG S8" would have been the same crew who did VOY S1 in reality. So, there's a pretty high chance the replacement characters would have mirrored, at least, the characters created for VOY.
    3) The new characters would have been newbie-biased, since the retained characters would all have been old hands by this point. So, Harry Kim and Kes for TNG?
