Yes, but it's an age old joke... I mean, I respect your opinion for sure, because there are a lot of stereotypes that get pushed around. But, the comedy and the writing is top notch.
Was Star Trek the greatest show ever made? Eh, that's gonna be debated for as long as people care to ask. All I know is, it's my favorite of every show ever made. The combination of everything in all 79 episodes appeals to me in a way no other show does. Music, acting, writing, direction, pacing, fun, excitement, intelligence, intentions.... and Bill Shatner. It's the perfect mix. It's like pizza: the ingredients all existed before but put together create my favorite food. But it's not everyone's favorite. There are really too many amazingly groundbreaking shows in the history of television to really rank which is the Greatest of All Time. It is, however, one of the most influential, immortal and popular.
I'd agree with this assessment. I love TOS. It's my all-time favorite television show. It was unique in how it synthesized a lot of science-fiction tropes into a digestible, mainstream manner (at the time)—making SF more naturalistic, focused more on characters and familiar navy trappings. TOS tried to rival its contemporary dramas in terms of its approach to characters, such as the prestigious Wagon Train. Too bad, TNG didn't take more of a page from Hill Street, making it more contemporary with its storytelling. As for the greatest TV show, at least one that utilized the medium in unexpected and artistic ways, I'd give that trophy to The Prisoner.
A big problem with trying to decide what's the best show is that so many series are largely forgotten because they were not syndicated at all or widely. There are several truly brilliant, award-winning series that are just off the radar.
I would argue that The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits were just as "adult" as TOS, back in the day. Mind you, us kids watched all three back then, too.
I should learn to be more specific with my posts....... I would never put TZ in a non adult category. I was thinking more of LiS Land of the Giants, Voyage to the bottom of the Sea etc. Sorta scifi with a home vessel traveling around and getting into adventures. I loved all these but soon went off them when TOS finally hit the UK! Anyway, off to watch my TZ season 1 box set now and feeling very adult
Yep. If people were in a spaceship, I watched it. Irwin Allen. Gerry Anderson. Glen Larson. A Canadian show called The Starlost, and any repeat of Silent Running with its similarly-domed freighters. The Richard Benjamin sitcom Quark. From the worst junk to a precious gem like Firefly, I had to watch it. Gimme a spaceship!

I loved "The Land of the Giants". If you get over the giant hand I thought it pretty adult with its dystopian society.. I still like Lost in Space. It had some good episodes. Although like the Dr Smith stuff they had some good serious episode. I remember offhand the episode when they were fleeing in the Chariot. Me too Even like Dark Matter more recently.
There were some quite serious episodes of Lost in Space while there were a couple of silly Land of The Giants shows too, but Land did try to maintain a more believable plot than Lost! Land also suffered from the ridiculous airdate screenings instead of the production order which would have given a better feel to the run of the series! JB
