There were already male cosplayers dressing up in Whittaker's outfit from the announcement video before her actual costume was revealed.

My dream Doctor cosplay would include one nod or another to every single Doctor, including Jodi's.

I said this on a panel.at a con two years ago, and I stand by it -- I could see Matt Smith wearing Jodie"s costume very easily.

My Doctor Who paraphernalia is mostly from the Fourth Doctor era. I've got the hat and scarf (not a long enough scarf, but since I'm much shorter than Tom Baker I probably couldn't handle the whole authentic one anyway).

People tend to dress up in whatever's trending that particular year. I remember the annual summer convention I attended after the Bajorans were introduced in Star Trek. There was a woman in the dealers' room who must have easily made that month's rent money selling both pierced and clip-on Bajoran earrings. I saw dozens of people wearing them, even my roommate who almost never wears jewelry (I didn't get one because I don't have pierced ears and I find the clip-on ones uncomfortable).

The article has a whopping mistake in it. Trudeau was 43 when he became Prime Minister, not 39. The Canadian Prime Minister who was 39 when his party won the election was Joe Clark. That was in 1979, and while he wasn't hideous, he was still not very photogenic (the political cartoonists routinely made fun of his ears).

To be fair, Matts civilian wardrobe was esoteric to say the least.

Also. The costume is terrible. It even beats out Colin’s motley garb, if only because if you take away the colours, Jodie’s is bland CBeebies costuming. In fact...CBeebies would have done a better job, as anyone who has sat through a season of Justin’s house can attest.

I don't think anything could quite beat Colin's outfit. But its no match for Ten's trenchcoat or Twelfth's hoodie, I agree.

Your avatar makes the point for me. Colin’s was eighties colour excess (and texture) over basic Edwardian style. It’s hartnells outfit, McGanns outfit, etc... but in technicolour crazy. Jodie’s outfit is...well. The Mork thing is accurate. The kindest I could say is that Ace or Sarah Jane might wear the base layers, in better colours. ( ok, maybe Sarah Jane would keep the colours.)
    Needs a redesign.
It’s not like there’s a whole genre of Edwardian adventuresses currently in vogue, or with any reference in wider Who....oh...hang on...

Its odd but when I first saw Jodie's outfit I liked the coat but not much else, but in hindsight I don't mind the rest of the outfit so much, but the coat seems bland, and worse, cheap. For an outfit that has a lot of colour in it, it does seem curiously muted at times. I do think there is a theme in in there though, which makes as much sense as any other, and it does give Jodie a distinct silhouette, but I do wish they'd at least tinker with it.

I will admit I was NOT fond of Eccleston's leathers which I initially saw as rather "street punk". However, when someone used a variant of the description above, "U-boat commander", it suddenly "clicked" for me, even the close cropped hair.

A similar thing happened concerning the Mondasian Cyberman. Until 2006, I was not keen on the "ski-mask" look. But then a fan said two seemingly innocuous words, "surgical gauze", and suddenly the "body horror" concept slammed home and they have since become my favorite design!

    My 2 cents,
I like the new doctor, Jodie is doing a good job, but the scripts are.. well crap, only a couple of episodes last season were any good, most were political driviel or overly pandering.. the previous season with capaldi was, not to good either..
This coming from a guy whos been watching Who since 83! Want more adventure!

The U-boat Captain comment is apt. I kinda see that as his casual sort of returning to normal but still on guard outfit from the time war. as we saw him start to regenerate after the events of the 50th anniversary.
So for me, I think the look of the leather and the jumper works all around given the context of what he had been thru in the war.

To clarify, I read that comparison several years ago (probably before Tennant left the show), so it's not like I disliked Eccleston's ensemble until reading Starker's post just this morning. But coming across it did change my perspective.

The U-Boat Captain comparison was actually made in the show itself, by Captain Jack in either The Empty Child or The Doctor Dances.

The show has been going downhill since “Dalek”. The stories just feel amateurish. It’s the reason I moved to Big Finish.
I’m also not a fan of all of these gender swaps. They just feel unnecessary and just ruin the characters. Just bring back or create characters of that gender.
