Spare me Rick Moranis, but give me as much Annie Potts as humanly possible.

I heard that in Bill Murray’s voice.

I'm all for Rick Moranis coming back.

But preferably in "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money" or "Spaceballs 2: the Schwartz Awakens".

Honestly, having the original cast doesn’t do much for me. I mean, I saw Ghostbusters 2. They brought everyone back for that and...

Jason Reitman's a better director than his father. His dramas all got shit reviews (Labor Day, Men, Women & Children, The Front Runner), but he's yet to make a bad comedy (Thank You For Smoking, Juno, Up in the Air, Young Adult, Tully). I think he can pull this off. We'll see, though.

Sure. He’s a better director. Nevertheless casting stunts are casting stunts unless the script really calls for those characters. Nostalgic casting doesn’t excite me much.

Good, because the whole thing would be pointless without Annie Potts.

    Yes, I'm serious.

I wonder if this means she'll have to take a break from Young Sheldon for a while?

One issue is I am not sure if this is even going to be set in New York. I kind of like the idea that they are a wife/husband ghostbuster team that go town to town busting ghosts. They discover the new kids and contact our heroes to help the kids. They have all been living in a secret underground bunker for decades studying ghost stuff that will come in handy later in the movie. Jason

Speaking of Sheldon, I think Jim Parsons would make a great Ghostbuster. I could totally see him donning a suit and power pack.

    Marsden is very sad.
Has a series or franchise ever "unbooted" itself before? Usually a reboot is the end of the original, one way or another.

If this doesn't suck it might make some old properties more "viable" for continuation, maybe?

Because Hollywood always seems to have a "it worked for x so this other thing that's nothing like x will work too" attitude.

Well Star Trek is making a Picard series after the Abrams movies petered out. Can't think of any more off the top of my head.

Superman Returns went back to earlier continuity by ignoring Superman 3 and 4. Not sure if that counts or not.

Also, the Godzilla series periodically changes continuity but many of the new continuities still recognize Godzilla (1954) as having happened while leaving out all the other movies.

Don't know if Godzilla really counts, as all except the latest, Shin Godzilla, acknowledge the events of the first movie.

The Ultra Series, though, rebooted several times, with UltraSeven only retroactively set in the original universe. The first real reboot was the anime Ultraman from the mid-70s, which was followed by another live action show, Ultraman 80, set in the original universe.

After that came an animated film and two short live action shows each co-produced with American and Australian companies and all autonomous reboots. Not counting the Ultraman Zearth parodies, Ultraman Tiga was the first Japanese live action reboot, followed by one sequel show and several more reboots.

The first return to the original universe were a couple of direct-to-video sequels to UltraSeven, until 2006's Ultraman Mebius (or Moebius) was a full-on unbooting.

Could probably come up with plenty of examples if pressed, but it feels like it happens a lot that later sequels have completely ignored some of the previous movies while keeping earlier iterations. Brain is fried at the moment, but that situation doesn't feel all that unique. Varying amounts of the original cast may return, but the reboot cast has been kicked aside in favor of a second softer reboot/sequel setup plenty of times.

Read on IMDB that Paul Rudd is in final negotiations to join the movie.
Finally some news I can really get behind. Great casting.

Now that I think about it, didn't the recent Halloween movie do something like that?
