It was just as horrible as "Worf spends his entire life torn between his Klingon heritage and his human/Federation duty. Oh, wait, he finally gets the perfect job to let him straddle both worlds, use his lifetime of experience, have a 'homecoming', of sorts, back to the Klingon Home World, serve a vital diplomatic function and spend time with his best friend/head of his new 'house' as a Federation ambassador to Qo'nos...but, aw, fuck it, let's just throw that all in the trash and have him back on the Enterprise in a vaguely defined role for no god damned reason whatsoever."

    Because Nemesis fucking SUUUUUCKS.

It's a fucking terrible scene. While I feel bad for Wheaton that he was unceremoniously cut, it's just awful on so many levels. Then again, the whole movie is garbage, so it's par for the course.

It sounds like you're not a fan of drama. I hope the show has plenty of drama.

Drama is fine as long as there are also lighter moments and humour to balance it out. I am just not the biggest fan of completely dark, dreary and depressive series and I especially don't want a Star Trek series to be that way as the appeal of Star Trek is for me the portrayal of an overall optimistic, nicer future.

Well, to give him credit, Wesley stopped .. um... "talking" about the warp cores when he saw the attractive ladies.... So let your imagination roll.

I sort of agree, I always wanted picard to have his cake and eat it too, the adventurous life as an explorer as well as a family, and perhaps an ambassadorship or trouble shooter job to keep busy with in his old age. I feel it was sad that Kirk was miserable in his retirement years, and was glad picard was spared that. That being said, what what i have seen of star trek picard, I really think they are going to make this work on a level that will please die hard next gen fans.

Picard's future years will involve driving around the French countryside in his 2368 Jaguar E-type 3000 and going to Sandrine's in Marseille to play pool and hook up.

Because adding to the complexity of the existing character "Jean Luc Picard" is more interesting because we know exactly where the character is coming from and what his past experiences are.

I'm assuming our first-hand knowledge of the mind and past experiences of Picard will be of value when whatever new information is added to the complexity of the character.

Granted, movies are made all the time in which the audience can become invested in a new character, but I think the depth of the audience investment will be greater with a known character when it comes to the exploration of the character's new experiences at one stage of his life versus his past experiences that occurred at a different stage of his life.

What is it, exactly, on this list that you think demonstrates it’s a stretch for Picard to have depression? I would argue this same list actually supports that he would be struggling later in life.

-Captain is a demanding and stressful job. It’s taken it’s toll on him. Also, now that he’s not captain, he could be struggling the same way Kirk did when he was out of the chair.

-First contact with other species is amazing, but like being a captain, could also be a stressful situation. Also, he doesn’t get to make first contact anymore and might miss that “purpose” he had.

-Defeating enemies is stressful. Why do you think so many in the military suffer from PTSD?

-Life on earth and time travel. These are in the context of overcoming some great threat or enemy.

-As for another happy life, living multiple lifetimes is probably stressful.

Bottom line: I think Picard has had an abundance of adversity, and while he’s overcome those challenges time and again, it would not be surprising for things to have taken their toll on him. There’s also the fact that we don’t know yet what happened during the last 15 years. There easily could have been a life altering event that’s greatly impacted him.

Alex Kurtzman is well-known for his deep explorations of human psychology, after all.

Yeah, I've never heard of Michael Chabon, the Hugo, Nebula, Pulitzer, etc award-winning novelist who was brought in as one of the show's main writers, either.

Oh yes, I'm sure his Hugo Award will have a lot of power over Kurtzman's contracts.

They haven't mentioned Gates McFadden returning back to play Beverly in 'Picard' though. Recent rumors notwithstanding, none other TNG cast members have been asked to star in the new series.

I assume Picard would either be divorced from Beverly or never gotten together with her, hence there'll be no appearance from Gates at least during its first season. Worst case scenario, the show-runners mightve decided to kill her off and it becomes - after Romulus - another reason why Picard leaves Starfleet after five decades of outstanding career as a Starfleet officer.

I hope to see Beverly returns too, but I'm afraid it won't be anytime soon, perhaps not during S1 :confused:

Just remember that Discovery retooled for S2 by bringing in Pike and Spock. Sure, it was a half-hearted attempt to appease disaffected fans, but it was something. So when they talk about not bringing back in any other TNG actors, never say never. That's assuming Picard even lasts more than a season... I don't think the intention was to have any TOS actors appear in TNG other than McCoy's cameo on Farpoint either, but instead we eventually got Sarek, Spock, and Scotty...then the crossover in Generations. So I never take these statements that seriously. I'm sure they want Picard to stand on its own but they know they can pull the guest star reunion ripcord at any time for some big publicity.

Contract for Star Trek Picard is for 3 years / 3 seasons. Everything can change from S01 to S03. Like in Discovery. S02 was something that no one has planned.

I already said I wouldn't be surprised if Picard returns to Starfleet in season 3 and takes command of the Enterprise (E,F,J it doesn't metter).

My guess is that season one will be it's own thing, season two will be TNG reunions/where are they now's and season 3 will feature a recast Young Picard for USS Stargazer flashbacks with the hopes of carrying on with the new younger Picard after Stewart's return is over.

I am curious about what could be worse than the loss of the Stargazer. TNG was Picard coming back from that.
