I hope they just make it a normal supernova in the Romulan system and deal with the political ramifications. No need to have some weird technobabbley superluminal übernova.

I don't think that building around this even that was just background noise for the reboot film is necessarily an issue, if they have a good idea for what they want to do with it. Destabilisation of a major galactic power can certainly lead to a lot of interesting things, albeit the situation is quite similar than one in TUC.

The thing is though - the destruction of friggin' Vulcan was never shown to have any serious consequences, besides Spock being sad and breaking up with Uhura over it.

    Maybe in the next movie.
Quite right, quite right. I'm just excited to see more of the Romulans. That's also why I don't want more Klingons.

Well, yes, Kelvin films are crap. But it doesn't mean that consequences of a planet's destruction cannot be handled better, especially if the showrunners intentionally chose this even to be one of the focal points of the show. All I am saying that them choosing to use this isn't itself a good or bad thing, it depends on how they handle it.

It is probable that we see Klingons too. One possibility is that the Klingon used the destabilisation of the Romulan Star Empire to annex parts of it, which leads to breaking of the Klingon-Federation Alliance and increased tension between the Feds and the Klingons. (Something like that might have happened in STO, though I don't clearly remember.)

Interesting! My suspicion (based on the hard to see but shiny and seemingly solid delta from the leaked set photos and the seemingly outline-only delta barely visible in the bottom frame) is that it's just the delta (no backing shape) but that the delta isn't only an outline but is black/metallic with a silver or gold border (hence the appearance of fullness in glare, and the appearance of outline in closeup).

Or maybe the Klingons moved to annex parts of the Romulan Empire and in order not to endanger the Klingon-Federation alliance (and because the losses from the war with the Dominion are still fresh) the Federation does nothing to stop them besides some statements of disapproval.

Picard is appalled by this, raises a big stink (aka making an impassioned monologue about the ideals of the Federation), and when that doesn't help, resigns.

I'm even more lukewarm on these uniforms after seeing this extrapolation/speculation. It's just bland. Also the problem for me is that it's following more in Bob Blackman's footsteps. I strongly believe that Star Trek uniforms are best when they follow Bill Thesis' design aesthetic, such as the Kelvin uniforms and the updated TOS ones on DISCO.

But then again, I love Thesis designs for TNG's early season and TOS. They're simple, elegant and sexy as hell. I even want a skant of my own! While the Bob Blackman's TNG update is hardly my favorite uniform, it succeeds because it keeps Thesis original lines. Everything from DS9 to the TNG movies were... um... mechanic uniforms or Puma tracksuits.

I generally prefer Blackman designs, but you're right. The leaked uniform has no character, just a mess of all things that came before thrown at the wall.
It can't even be an issue of budget, which came to inform a lot of costuming choices in TNG.
My instinctive feeling here is that the uniform that was leaked is a prototype or a secondary uniform; the hero costumes will look better.
I like the overall VOY-ish aesthetic; it's just that what i've seen appears to be too bland.

He is like a rubber band. He was held back for so long, once he was finally let go he shot forward with extreme velocity.

Making Kim an admiral would be an excellent way of distracting the audience from the supernova issue...upstage it with a bigger :wtf: .

For me, it's not the design that I have an issue with so much as the incredibly cheap-looking material it's made out of. It looks like something out of an '80's Saturday Night Live skit.

I'm pretty sure Garrett Wang will never be involved in another Star Trek production again.

Bingo. As I've said before, we've never gotten an explanation for why Ceti Alpha VI blew up. Didn't hurt THE WRATH OF KHAN one bit, nor did the four subsequent movies feel compelled to explain it, even though it led to Khan vowing vengeance on Kirk, which led to Spock dying, etc.

Romulus is toast, this has had far-reaching implications throughout the Quadrant, end of story. No technobabble necessary.

But this is Star Trek-we've made a career out of technobabble to solve the problems, and technobabble to explain the technobabble.
