News CBS: Twilight Zone premiered with more viewers than DSC

And they've renewed it for a 2nd season.

I wouldn't think too much into this, as CBS All Access is much bigger now than it was in October 2017, but thought I'd share!

 

Yes. CBSAA is bigger, and Jordan Peele's name and image are up front and center in the promotion of the show. Given Peele's current widespread popularity PLUS the "Twilight Zone" name recognition (albeit, Star Trek has similar name recognition), it's not surprising the show has good premiere ratings.

 

Good news. More CBSAA subscriptions means more Trek.

 

I'm very pleased. I'm a TZ fan, so that feels good...but also it's an indication that CBSAA subscriptions have continued to grow.

 

I was surprised by this -- I would have expected Discovery's premiere to have bested it, even though All Access was deep backwater then. Discovery enjoyed a direct lead-in on broadcast CBS, after all.

In fairness, Twilight Zone got a big boost from all the Trek fans being signed up when it premiered, I'm sure. I watched but wouldn't have signed up just for it. (It's kept me subscribed, though.)

It will be interesting to see if the subsequent Trek shows dethrone it.

 

Let's just hope 2019-TZ gets better after the flaming dumpster fire of "The Wunderkind".

 

Finally, something to talk about other than cannibalism.

 

The Twilight Zone had a 60 second TV spot during the Super Bowl, presented as a glitch in the broadcast with the message “CBS is off the air”.

 

Yeah, and Jordan Peele is having a moment. But, still. TZ has been revived twice before to tepid response. I'm kinda shocked it bested Trek, which enjoys a built-in fanbase and fairly recently managed to draw in blockbuster audiences.

 

Peele is just that popular.

 

Yeah, people need to remember that CBS is saying TZ's premiere did better than Discovery's premiere, not that TZ's premiere did better than any Discovery episode.

A lot more people subscribe to CBS AA now than back when Discovery premiered, and CBS attributes much of AA's growth to Discovery.

 

I've been looking at the weekly Parrot Analytics lists for streaming shows. Twilight Zone fell off the top 7 pretty quickly, while Discovery has remained on it this season.

The 4/28 list has Discovery at #2.

I still feel a major reason is that CBSAA was a all-knew generally unknown commodity when DSC premiered, while CBSAA was a bit more a "known thing" when Twilight Zone premiered.

In the 18 months since DSC premiered, proprietary streaming services from networks such as CBS's CBSAA are becoming a bit more common (Disney will have one soon, as will NBC) that I think people are less apprehensive about subscribing to one.

 

Has All Access added any big subscription drivers since Discovery? TZ is the biggest thing I’ve seen, but I don’t pay that much attention. In my mind, AA is still pretty backwater — I’d group it with the DC streaming service before Netflix, for example.

 

The TZ premier didn't impress the Mrs. and me much at all.
She cancelled our subscription cause she watched everything she wanted to see and I'm not interested in it till another Trek show becomes available.

Netflix just informed me that they are raising their subscription to $13.00 per month so I'm contemplating cancelling them also.
I think what i'll do is just resubscribe for a month when they put the new seasons of Lost in Space and Stranger Things up.

I'm going to try D+ for a couple of months when that hits in November and then reevaluate its worth after the new year.

I'm finding that paying month after month for something I'm only watching a couple of times a month isn't worth it.

 

If it wasn't of the fact that I have two little kids who stream a ton of stuff out of the "Kids Library" portion of Netflix, I might bail on them too. I've watched all the original content from them that I need to see right now (inclusive of the shows you've mentioned).

Right now, I'm way more into stuff on Amazon Prime (Man in the High Castle, Expanse, Jack Ryan, etc).

 

Yeah, We've got PRIME also.
But that has a couple more things going for it so we'll keep that.
