It's almost as if discussing the highs and lows of pop culture with people into the same stuff is inherently kind of interesting.

Again, just me, but I would never discuss a show that averages a 4 or 5. For me, that is the Orville, Stargate, etc. Yeah, I would watch it, but there is nothing in a 4 or 5 show that would cause me to go in to the particular forum or threads and talk about it. I want to discuss things I love, not things that are for me, on the whole, meh. That just feels like I would be wallowing in things I consider mediocre.

For example, that was Enterprise for me. I watched it the first season and a half, and came back at the beginning (4 or 5 episodes) of the next two seasons (the resets) and gave it another shot because I WANTED to like it. I genuinely want to like the things I watch. But they were mostly 4 or 5s, so I moved on. You know how many times I posted in the Enterprise forum during these times? Maybe once or twice, because I just don't think it's worth my time or others time, and I don't want to shit on a show that other people truly enjoy. Where's the fun in that? But again, that's just me.

For me if Discovery was a constant 10, there would be no point to come to the forums to discuss. "I love it and it's great, woohoo. Do you like it like me? Yeah, I do..." Yeah, very interesting discussion.
Star Trek IS the only tv show forum I ever visit on regular basis. I don't go to any GoT forums, any Breaking Bad forums, any MCU forums. Star Trek is special!

I can like it, dislike it, talk about it non-stop. I can go back to 60 years of history, discuss something from 60s, compare to a show from the 90s, compare to BSG, The Orville, Expanse, etc. There is lots and lots of stuff to talk about. Critical discussions are the most fun. If it was all pure roses and lollipops, it would be boring as hell. But I guess to each their own. Some only come here to get reassurance that what they like is liked by someone else. For me, critical discussion is the fun part. And you can't have a critical discussion if everyone is of the same opinion.

It's not just you. While I think criticising media I enjoy is fun and valid, I find zero joy in spending time with stuff I consider mediocre or downright bad. To each their own, though. It's all good.

And, as has been pointed out multiple times, there is a range of opinions here. No one is arguing to the contrary. Just don't be surprised that members of a Discovery forum predominantly enjoy it. The poll results seemed to confuse you.

Again, maybe they just like it more than you? That's pretty condescending and shows that you don't really get the whole broad spectrum of opinions aspect that you claim to enjoy and value.

Or, you know, "Holy shit, did you see what they just did? Where do you think they go from here?" "What do you think Lorca's deal is, he is so different from previous Captains." "So this is different than what we heard before, how can we fit it into canon?" There are a lot of things to discuss as opposed to "That was so stupid, they have nowhere else to go." "Lorca is such a crap character, he's nothing like Picard or Kirk." "This can't possibly be prime, because they said this that totally contradicts Spock!"v I mean, my God, did you never excitedly walk out of a movie theater with your friends after seeing something cool (The Matrix, Captain America: Winter Soldier, or Love Simon, whatever your jam is) and just want to go talk about what you just saw? I find that a far more enjoyable experience than walking out of Thor The Dark World going, "Well, that was a movie. Does anyone care to discuss all the wrong choices the writer and director made?"
Way to be condescending and/or insulting. Well done.

I find that I really have to like a series to discuss it. Series that I just enjoy isn't enough. For example, I do enjoy The Orville as a middling series. I enjoy it enough to watch but not enough to want to discuss it. But, as you say, to each their own!

I said some. Why would that be an insult? The forums are welcome to everyone, even those who seek reassurances. It's in no way condescending, unless you take it that way, in which case you shouldn't.

Because I honestly don't think ANYONE does. I could be wrong but I honestly don't think @Vger23 or @fireproof78 or anyone else comes here thinking "Wow, I hope someone else likes that so that it validates my feelings on it!" I think they come here to talk about something cool they just watched with other people who think it was cool. Others can feel free to correct me.

For example, I loved The Last Jedi which is a reasonably unpopular opinion, even in the Star Wars forum. Believe me, I don't go in there because I have doubts about my love for it or else my self worth suffers, that would be the absolute wrong place to seek validation. I go in there hoping to discuss the cool things in that movie.

Yep - for me that show is what the second season of "The Orville" has become (IE they've doubled down on TNG style tropes which I no longer enjoy; although I liked the tone in Orville Season 1 a lot. Also, TOO MUCH Bortus/Mioclan stuff in Season 2 for my tastes.) - and for Star Trek is was "Voyager". I gave that show a full season, but in teh seciond season I quit watching after "The 37's" - I just couldn't take 'Bi-Polar Janeway" or the fact that with a 70+ yer trip and Prision waiting for many a Maquee member - NO ONE stayed befind on a planet that had developed pretty much similar to Earth - not one person.

That's when I said, the writing staff just can't do this premise at all.

I actually care far less about whether or not anyone agrees with my take on something or not than I do about simply watching the reactions unfold and, to your point, talking about cool things that I liked about an episode or arc.

But this has been a fascinating discussion, because it definitely illustrates that different people are motivated by different kinds of discussion. Some people apparently find discussing things they really like to be boring, and are only engaged / happy when they are being critical. Others are just the opposite. Still others are somewhere in between.

I personally am one of those who doesn't really want to spend time discussing ANY show I don't really love. I mean, there's really no franchise in all of media I like or care about more than Star Trek, but even here, I'm generally talking about TOS, the movies, and DSC. I hardly ever make an appearance in any of the other forums. It's not because I don't like the shows...it's just I don't like them enough to engage in constant discussion about them...and I LOVE all Star Trek. So....yeah, that's a huge calibration point for how willing I am to spend time talking about a show.

And...for shows I don't like....again, I'm not sure why anyone finds it a valuable use of their time to constantly crank out criticism and complaints. But, to be fair, it's all based on what the individual poster enjoys. For me, life is too short to waste on discussing something on TV I'm not super-passionate about. @CommanderRaytas brought up The Orville as a perfect example. I like the show, and have seen every episode. But, I don't care enough about it to engage in any kind of discussion. I can't even think of something worth discussing even if I wanted to engage there. It just isn't that interesting to me. But, I sure as hell don't wander into Orville discussions looking to shit all over the writing, production values, etc. Not a valuable use of my time, at least according to my values.

So, I ultimately disagree with @ITDUDE that "critical discussions are the most fun," at least from my perspective. I actually take very little joy in critical discussion or analysis when discussing television shows. I have enough of that in my day job, thanks. When it comes to entertainment, I want to spend time discussing things I like, not things I don't like. But, it's all about the individual's POV and what fires you up the most. Some people like being critical and find joy in that. Others find joy in not being critical and discussing the things that excited or made them happy, rather than their disappointments.

I think it would be better if people (including myself at times) simply recognized that and discontinued trying to antagonize each other.

But, to be clear, @ITDUDE I don't come to the board to have my opinions validated. It honestly doesn't make a damn bit of difference to me. There's all kinds of shit I like that I am in the vast minority on. Hasn't changed my opinion or my level of enjoyment one single bit.

    Signed,

The Guy Who Likes Star Trek V, TOS Season 3, Star Trek: Nemesis and doesn't hate Jar Jar Binks
