Couldn't Pike have been rebuilt as a cyborg (spoilers for Project Daedalus)

It would make more sense to try to make cyborgs harder to hack instead of punishing of them. They are still people and that verges on bigotry towards them.

Fair enough, and I understand that myself--having a hearing impairment I likely would not qualify for military service.

I would think someone like Pike would get an honorable discharge due to his injuries, and ensured he has a good civilian job and life. Strictly speaking, military service is not a right (as pre-serum Steve Rogers found out in Captain America), so I'm not sure how well the bigotry angle would play out (I say this as someone with a real life defect myself). If Pike, Airiam, or other cyborgs are given good jobs and lives to turn to, it may be hard to legally say they are being punished any more than someone who is honorably discharged from the military after injuries are said to be punished. Pike would still have all his awards, etc. as a retired veteran.

It's possible Pike/Airiam could teach at the Academy, where sensitive info is not involved.

By these standards, Starfleet should never allow Data nor any telepaths to serve. Or probably humans either (Gary Mitchell, Sybok's thrall, spores, etc.).

There's actually merit to that considering that the loss of the Enterprise-D was a combination of Data's neurological system causing a failure to save Geordi, as well as Geordi's own cybernetic parts (his visor) subsequently being hacked to allow the Enterprise-D to be destroyed.

Canon has it that losses of ships result in automatic court martial. And a ruthless military court attorney could argue that Geordi and Data should not have been serving. No one's saying they couldn't have other non-military jobs.

Hacking is a major security problem even without enhanced people or androids. Realistically it would be their biggest concern, something that’s a real world problem too.

Considering that the next movie had Data's emotion chip fitted with a circuit breaker, and Geordi's VISOR replaced with implants, it's entirely possible that's exactly what happened.

That's true. A turnabout might be that another lawyer might claim that Data/Geordi/cyborgs are no more a vulnerability to hacking than the Starfleet ships themselves are.

One difference though is that cyborgs' cybernetic parts and androids are private property/citizens. They aren't owned by Starfleet whereas starships are. Data and any cyborgs' security is under their control, not Starfleet. If cyborg Pike or Data wanted to ignore their monthly security downloads (or use Symantec instead of Sophos), Starfleet might not be able to do anything about it as those cybernetic parts aren't Starfleet property. That is where hacking would be a concern different from hacking of any other Starfleet hardware (that is actually starfleet property).

Preventing Data from serving in Starfleet due to hacking concerns but letting him have literally any other job is really mild considering we had an entire episode where the Federation tried to declare him property and not a sentient being.

Again, one wouldn't necessarily have to be exposed to external connections to be enhanced. Good luck hacking my PC when I remove the ethernet cable.

    yep.
I got a internal defibrulator installed right above my heart last year. im one of those new cyborgs too. It can connect to a monitoring station in my house and then to my phone or to medical monitors via bluetooth. I have been told its only for monitoring and cant possibly have the defib function activated remotely but yeah. i do once in awhile think about the fact I potentially have a remote on off switch with the worst security money can buy.

I don't think Airiam was plugged into anything when she got hacked. To be fair, hacking in Star Trek seems to work like magic. Even B4's "signal" was detected from light years away in Nemesis.

WORF: Captain, I am picking up an unusual electromagnetic signature from the Kolarin system.
    PICARD: What sort of signature?
    WORF: Positronic.
LAFORGE: It's very faint but I've isolated it to the third planet in the Kolarin system.

It's a wonder how the Enterprise ever expected to be undetected by enemies with Data aboard. :vulcan:

Bele was able to hack the Enterprise in 'Let That Be Your Last Battlefield' just by thinking about it.

If we had Star Trek style hacking in Star Wars, a bunch of Rebel hackers would by typing away at their computers in the Rebel base on Yavin IV and Darth Vader would suddenly drop dead aboard his starship.

^ They detect "lifesigns" from pretty far away in Trek as well.

Those sensors are way more sensitive and precise than they should realistically be (oops, was that a split infinitive?).

Nasty court martial lawyer prosecuting the destruction of the Enterprise NCC-1701-D: I give you this video, exhibit B, on why androids like Mr. Data should not be allowed to serve in Starfleet.

And that's not even getting into the time he got hacked by Lore's Borg, abducted the senior staff of the ship, and tortured the Chief Engineer barely a year ago.

I have not seen the episode. I had thought that Pike's nervous system was so damaged by Delta radiation that he could not be connected to any cybernetic limbs or organs. I agree the wheelchair may have been a temporary fix.

I think we just have to accept that "delta-ray" scarring is qualitatively different than being mangled in a shuttle crash.

Considering it looks like now that Pike will be key in bringing down Section 31 and their AI master, it makes it hard not to wonder if his "accident" wasn't revenge by Section 31 survivors for what he did to their organization.

Maybe TOS Spock should check on Tilly, Stamets, Burnham and Saru...

I think that was the plot for Shatner's novel The Return.

Turtletrekker made a perfectly reasonable, polite, and correct request for you not to post alleged spoilers for future episodes without adding spoilers tags to cover them, and you responded by telling him you were placing him on ignore.

I asked you not to tell people you were placing them on your ignore list yesterday, because that's the opposite of ignoring them, and it can be considered trolling. It's also a shame because Turtletrekker did nothing wrong.

Infraction for trolling. Comments to PM.

If you have inside knowledge of upcoming events on the show, that's great. It doesn't mean you don't have to follow the rules here, though. Be conscious of posting spoilers and be polite to other posters unless they break the rules, in which case you can hit the notify button and let the mods deal with it.
