I did the same thing, lol. I fast forwarded that Airiam scene initially, thinking it was a commercial.

I agree the actors carried the scene. The performances sold it.

Good episode. I was sorry to see Airiam go. I would have been more sad had they developed her character better throughout the season before killing her off. One episode was not enough.

Loved Admiral Kat. Loved the Spock exchanges with both Burnham and Stamets. Fascinated by the Control/AI taking over Starfleet plot. They actually now have my interest with S31. Glad to see some development on Nhan.

Where was Reno? She could have helped Stamets.

And that one time presumably refers to the events of the recent DISCO novel about Tilly? That's certainly how I took it.

From what we seem it looks like they didn’t have the tech to do something like that to a human, even in the 24th century. Plus augmentating is a bit of a no no in Starfleet.

I doubt people will be wanting to do that when the Borg come round. :)

Working with Spock was more efficient anyway. You can get things done three times as fast when you're not constantly arguing, like Stamets and Reno would've.

I thought it was a good callback to TMP, when Spock arrived and helped Scotty balance the warp engines.

I mean, you’re not wrong. But it would have been nice to see at least a passing reference to Reno. We haven’t seen her in what? 4? 5 episodes?

The interior of Section 31 HQ looks like a Klingon ship and corridors. Also it was nice to finally get onscreen confirmation that Naan is a Barzan, though it's been more than obvious since her first appearance.

Gave this episode a 9, although its true rating from me is 8.5.

I'm pretty sure that I liked it more than most because I love crew moments and family moments. I'm from the part of the fanbase that thinks of each crew as a "space family." What can I say? I'm more emotional than logical, more Bones than Spock.

By the end of the episode, I was in tears. So I landed on 9 instead of 8.

    A few initial thoughts:

--The Airiam storyline really messed me up. Loved getting to know her! I really hate that we had to lose her. Maybe there’s some kind of miraculous resurrection and/or save for her, too.

—The Spock vs. Michael sibling rivalry continues to give me life. They are petty and petulant, snippy and sulky and sad in all the right spots. There were no super zingers this week, but when Spock knocked down that chess set? I felt that.

—Felt that Tilly was a tad too much, but within the context of the ep, both her deference to Admiral Katrina as well as her heartfelt plea to Airiam worked.

--The mine scene wasn't nervewracking enough. I will say that I was nervous for the landing party knowing that Airiam was compromised.

--Like many, I was irritated that we didn't know Nhan's status for a while.

--Stamets was wonderfully professional and beautifully human, given what had just happened to him.

I wish that each episode was an hour or more so that we could get more character moments. The reason why people liked last week's episode so much is because of its long running time. We had time for three complete arcs last week and the higher ratings showed that. This week, I felt that the A (Airiam) and B (Spock and Michael) stories were better than the C one (Section 31).

If they lengthen each episode a bit, they can let things breathe so that we don't have to experience how amazing the Disco crew is through flashbacks.

Lt. Leslie appeared in 58 episodes altogether and he barely had any dialogue throughout the entire run of TOS. Reno will be back soon. She was built up to have an important role of some kind and I doubt Tig Nigaro is a complete non-entity on the DSC sets. She'll in all likelihood be back by the midseason break.

The ending, while all very touching, didn't work for me. We never really learned much about Airiam, other than she was a cybernetic life-form of some sort. Her death didn't carry the same weight as if Saru or Tilly had die. As it stands, I feel as bad for her as I did for the crewman on the Enterprise-D who merged with the floor in "In Theory", it sucks but I didn't know this person long enough to be too emotionally impacted by their death. The front-loading of her background in hindsight, while interesting, seemed liked a rushed way to get us to care about her. It's a shame, because everything up to the end was pretty good, especially Spock's scenes with Burnham and Staments.

I feeling like a 4 or 5 on this one, and I'm probably being too nice.

I thought it was cute that Detmer basically says "yay for augmentation!" When it comes up that Airiam is an augmented human.
