IDW has done three anthology series, Alien Spotlight, Captain's Log, and now Waypoint. Waypoint was originally just six issues, but they also did a standalone special last December, and there is another special coming out in March.
I would very much like(to write myself) a series about WWIII and the Post-Atomic horror that bins established facts about that era and mushes them into ours. Something that tells the story of how Humanity survived at all, and how we put aside our petty hatreds. Something a biiiiit deeper than 'well then aliens showed up so we got on with each other'. Inspired, rather completely, by Horizon Zero Dawn.
We see Nog rising through the ranks, but I'd like to see how Rom and his family fared on Ferenginar. How is Leeta as First Lady? Is Leck involved in something weird again? How is Nog's sister Bena growing up? Also interesting would be a reappearance of Miranda Kadohata. She was one of the few new TNG I started to like despite her role in the mutiny. I don't need more SCE stories as they lack depth and focus on technical things. But I like Sonya Gomez and she might have a cameo in another series..... As to character focused books: I'd like to see a Spoiler: character biography book about Ro Laren's past. A biography if you want. I know there were the Terok Nor novels but they hardly scratched the surface.
I'd love to see a Gabriel Lorca "Captain's Table" novel. Or two - one for each version! And a Robert April one as well. There hasn't been an April CT novel, has there?
I liked the idea of the Captain's Table books, but the format led to some awkward stories occasionally. I think it was the Sisko story that had patrons interrupt his story every other page, for example. Neat at first, but it didn't take long to become extremely annoying. I like your idea about Prime and MU Lorca versions.
Oh, and a Georgiou CT novel as well. It saddens me that we know more about her MU counterpart than prime.
I'm a bit surprised to see we haven't gotten any kind of April Captain's Table story or novel. At this point with April, the Rise of the Federation Vanguard/Seekers, the Full Circle Fleet, Vale's promotion, and now Discovery we probably have enough new captains for a new anthology.
Me too. World War III and the Romulan War were 2 events that seemed to be foundational events in Star Trek history that lacked any sort of detail. The Romulan War finally got some exposition from the novels (though I'd still like to see more---which is why I continually post a request for a "Tales of the Romulan War" anthology to fill in some of the details). WWIII remains the only event with any serious exposition. We got bits and pieces from the novelization to First Contact, and Federation gave us a little bit more, though much of that novel has since been overwritten by canon. According to Memory Alpha/Beta, when it started is even questionable. Maybe 2023, maybe in the 2030's. We know it ended in 2053, we know about the post-atomic horror. I'd love to see someone tie it altogether. I liked the idea of the Optimum Movement from Federation being a key player. While some of the events involving Cochrane in that book would likely be moot, the Optimum Movement and the lead character of the movement (was it Thorksen or Thorkelson?) had some potential. Of course there's Colonel Green. Maybe take some usable bits from the few other places it was mentioned and tie it all together.
I find it more likely that the war started and ended in 2053. It's a nuclear war, for crying out loud. (Unless it didn't start out that way.) As for the Optimum Movement: Maybe that was one of the other factions. Could have been that WW III was ECON vs. Optimum?
Went through the thread specifically to look for the Prynn/Shar fans, lol. Was hugely disappointed in how both these characters got sidelined after making such a big impact as mainline DS9 characters. And to be sidelined by a bunch of nobodies! I can't even remember the difference between Stinson and Blackmer or even if they're separate characters at this point. My list is as follows: Dedicated Aventine novel, no crossovers, just Dax and her lovable young crew. Shezhou series of episodic adventures, like getting a new TNG series, but in the books. Dedicated Prynn/Shar novel, bringing them back together! Articles of the Federation, under the new administration. It'd be really interesting to see the post-Bacco/post-Ishan government, especially from a President who is nothing like Bacco. Bringing a version of Tasha to modern TNG, somehow...lol. I always loved it when she came back in the show and it seemed like a waste and a huge mistake for her to leave in season 2 right before things started getting better. Now, I've been loving any chance to see her in the books, whether in flashbacks or time/universe displacement. I'm ready for her to get Jean Grey'd and make her way back to the Enterprise's senior staff, no matter how outrageous and unlikely and fanwanky it would be! For DS9 to be good at characters again.
Blackmer had his differences with Ro and that's why he's stuck in my head more than Stinson. Stinson is a nondescript character like Joanna Faur and Dina Elfiki. I fear if one of those characters is developed further.... Spoiler: fate of characters they might be killed off at some point.
I got the impression they used lower yield nuclear weapons, though in one of Dayton Ward's novels I think they noted almost an entire state was obliterated. But there are all kinds of nuclear bombs, not all would cause worldwide destruction. But based on Encounter at Farpoint drugged soldiers were used. So it was probably a bit of conventional warfare combined with targeted nuclear strikes. And if I remember correctly those drugged soldiers were noted in "Federation" as well. The Optimum movement as featured in "Federation" does remind me a bit of Colonel Green's speech as seen in Terra Prime. A group that was interested in genetic perfection. So not all elements of 'Federation' conflicts with canon. Some author that wanted to write a WWIII story could probably find some use for Optimum and combining that with what we know from canon. Now "Federation" skirted around WWIII as well. It got close, but it didn't really give more than general brushstrokes of the war. The novelization for First Contact was the only place I really saw any actual WWIII coverage that was contemporary to the war.
J + G R-S referenced minor details of Federation's version of Cochrane in their Shatnerverse novels, so they must have reconciled them somewhat in their minds if not explicitly in the novels.
Oh, yes, more Ferengi-Storys on Ferenginar would be great. Of the "Worlds of DS9" Series, that one was my favorite. Kadohata? Please, no. I really hated this character. Fortunately she left the Enterprise after a few storys. The only reason to bring her back (that I would like), would be a short appearance like that vulcan counselor, who got, what she deserved (just like Leybenzon).
