Should there be a Captain Pike spin-off from DSC?

Is there anything in canon definitively stating that Christopher Pike lived the rest of his natural life on Talos? Because literally all we saw is that they left him there and then TOS never followed up after the Menagerie. Well, that's like claiming Khan lived the rest of his life on Ceti Alpha 5 without incident...

All they have to do is say they found a cure for Pike's radiation poisoning, the Federation went back and cured Pike and retrieved him from Talos IV, and then gave him command of a brand new ship: USS Discovery NCC-1031-A. Set it in the TOS movie era and we can have Pike and whichever Discovery characters cross over (a la O'Brien from TNG to DS9) do whatever they want without worrying too much about canon, since the TOS movie era is largely unexplored.

Nothing on delta radiation in Memory alpha, https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Delta_radiation , would contradict if the show revealed a cure for delta poisoning to bring Pike back post-TOS.

 

Why is everybody so pissy about Discovery, and why do people want to see its main female character of color be displaced by a white male one?

 

No. Just no.

This is a show of the 21st century, shot with technology of the 21st century to be shown on a TV set of the 21st century and having modern set design of the 21st century; it should stay that way. Those wanting to see 'Constitution Retro Alpha' can continue to watch the first episodes of said series that had said design over and over, or watch the fan show that had said design for one episode (assuming its episodes are still on YouTube.)

 

I think you are missing the point of my joke, which outright said we'd get 8 years of modern special effects (from 2257 to 2265 in-universe), only for Pike to change the "desktop theme" of the Enterprise at the last scene of the last episode, just before Kirk takes command, as both a joke and to match up with TOS. Look at my actual post--In no way did I say anything about years' worth of 1960s style television.

Why would you assume that my problems with discovery season one is what race or gender the main character is? That is one hell of a leap from the one sentence I posted and rather insulting.

My problems were with the writing pure and simple.

I say were because I love season two so far. Its far more the kind of Trek I like.

 

Not another show, but an occasional mini-series would be fun.

That way folks won't get tired of having Pike around.

 

We never see Pike again, so he really only gets two episodes in Prime Continuity, and 1 1/2 movies in Kelvin Trek.

 

CBS' bizarrely distorted continuity obsession aside, does Discovery's Kirk have to be white?

I mean, farm boy from Iowa kinda screams it, but still...

Actually, a female white Kirk would probably work better.

 

How about a black female? Oh wait . . . "Discovery" already has a black female for its lead.

 

I voted yes, because Mount is awesome. OTOH I recognise that if they do have the Big E, and they make her look substantially different on the inside (they half-avoided that by only showing one door and one room), which we know they would, their supposed desire of making this show line up seamlessly with canon goes from almost impossible (as a writer, I know I could probably explain away almost everything visually inconsistent between Cage and Disco even now, it would just be really ****ing awkward, so I presume the writers of this show could) to actually impossible (you can explain the Big E’s exterior quite easily, especially because Menagerie has very few shots of the exterior of Pike’s Big E, but the interior? That would be nigh-unsalvageable). Now, obviously there’s some disagreement about the difference between “visual” canon and “actual” canon, so some people wouldn’t be bothered if they changed it. And I would almost certainly still enjoy a Pike series with radically altered visuals from the original version. But... I dunno, it seems like they’re trying hard to make things match up in a “we can explain this away” kind of way (even going so far as to retcon the Klingons with hair again, hallelujah), so... I dunno.

The Enterprise interior is skinnable like a desktop theme. You didn't know that? :O . The captain just has to say a few words, and the interior changes the way a Transformer changes into a car. No canon work ever said this wasn't the case... Kirk, Picard, and the rest got stuck on one desktop theme and it gave the impression it wasn't changeable

You've got to hand it to Dr. Who writers, they turned the issue of Dr Who's changing ship interior into a non issue with a single line.

 

I'd love a Pike series, Anson Mount is really good in the role. Maybe just a mini series? Or a couple of seasons at most being as we know what happens to Pike by the first season of TOS.

And, even if there were, it would amount to a throwaway line that could be ignored as needed.

The Federation doesn't have to be involved at all. Perhaps, somewhere deep in the Talosian complex, an ancient medical device is discovered that can rebuild Pike's body. (I'm thinking of something like the Autodoc from Larry Niven's Known Space series.) Pike and Vina, healed, are able to leave Talos IV (and perhaps the Starfleet Corps of Engineers leads a special mission to Talos to help the Talosians rebuild the planet). Pike could chronologically be in his 70s, but after the Autodoc he would look about 40.

I like the movie-era setting idea here, so as to not overlap too much with Discovery.

 

If they're not changing Pike, Spock, Sarek and Amanda's Gender/Skin tone, they wouldn't change Kirk's.

 

Well, there's still his character they can mess with. What, you hadn't heard that young Kirk will be featured in the Section 31 show as the agency's most vicious operative, while sharing a steaming romance with Mirror Georgiou on the way?

 

Yeah no. They haven't done anything comparable to that yet.
