Quite right! And to be honest, I'm somewhat surprised after Pike's wonderful introduction in “Brother” that's not something I'm hearing more around here. He seems to gel perfectly with the crew and the show, so why not just keeping him on as the captain?

I was thinking about how to rectify that with TEH CANNON(tm), given that Kirk said he took over the Enterprise from Pike in "The Menagerie." It occurs to me that the answer is quite simple:

Pike held the rank of "Fleet Captain" at some point, and it could easily argued/written that he commanded the Discovery directly , but the Enterprise (and potentially others) remained as a "direct report" ship under him with its own independent commander. Therefore, Pike technically still could "hand over" the ship to Kirk at the change of command.

The dialogue suggests that Pike’s promotion led to his leaving the Enterprise to Kirk; that said, I like your idea. This could certainly could be written around.

Right...the line is just vague enough where, combined with Pike's Fleet Captain rank...you can definitely find your way there.

It must be stated, that everything Commodore Mendez told Kirk regarding the later accident has to be treated with a grain of salt, as Mendez was not really Mendez in that episode. But Kirk could have corroborated the statements, and in any case, Spock was following his peculiar logic to try to give a decent life to his old captain.

So why can't they do that? Nothing says they have to start the Pike series after he leaves Discovery. Start it with him taking over command from Captain April. The events that happen during his time on Discovery could take place during the down time between seasons.

Quite. Pike has clearly been planned for a short season-long arc on Discovery and I think that's the right call.

That would be weak now, since we've already seen Pike, Spock and Number One on Discovery in the late 2250s. A series about their adventures a few years prior would also be limited in scope, and wouldn't have much of a narrative flow, since we've already seen what these specific versions of these characters become. A prequel to a prequel, lol.

The better move would have been doing an April series from the start, but Discovery effed that up. I think it best, at this point, to avoid anymore prequel shows.

    In that scene, he was.

Mendez was only an illusion during his scenes in the shuttlecraft and on the Enterprise. At Starbase 11, OTOH, that was the real one.

If I were the producers I would definitely consider this. I would lay it out like this.

    1. We know how his story sort of ends. A fleet captain, commanding multiple ships and being injured in a profound way. START there with a couple of great flash forwards.
    2. Lay out a multi year, limited plan and a clear time frame for the show run.
    3. Write each season with each character (Pike, Number One, Spock) having a very specific arc.
    4.THEN write season one.
    5. Refer forward every once in a while back to the end, the crash. Then the real end, in the last scene, we see Kirk, board the ship, but never see his face.

Pike mini-series or television movie? YES!

    Full Pike-series? No.
Only as a "replacement" for DIS, either if it get's prematurely cancelled or runs it's natural course.

After Inhumans, this probably just gets him back to neutral on the casting side.

I'm a black woman who'd love to see a Pike's Enterprise series. There's no such thing as too much Trek.
Love Anson Mount as Chris Pike. He has such tragic endings in the Prime universe and in the Kelvin timeline. Always intrigued me as a captain and a character so I'd love to see more.

    Because TEH CANON!

Though we're right back to that absence of evidence thing again. Nowhere does it say (at least not that I'm aware of, anyway) Number One was never captain of the E for an extended period of time.

Yes, definitely! I was very impressed with Anson Mount as Pike in this episode and would love to see a Pike/Enterprise spin-off. Hell of a better idea than Georgiou/Section 31, IMO.

I would enjoy a series led by Cole Bohannon. His Pike was good and very personable, which is a very pleasant distraction from the norm of a Starfleet Captain that we usually see. He has a very Rikeresque approach to command.

Well they been talking up the Enterprise and Constitution-class in general for all of Discovery. I would like to see then put that back on screen. We have the adventured of the Legendary Captain James T. Kirk from some ten or so years in the future, filmed around 50 years ago. Lets see it and why its the place to be in all of Starfleet when we have justification that its "THE place to be" rather than just a show about people on a trek through the stars. We've had years of looking back to it, and films that tried to got back to is (but can't, because they are movies)...lets have it for real, but with a either a different Constitution-class starship....or with Captain Pike in command of USS Enterprise.
