Um please watch any TOS episode with Klingons - then watch ST:TMP and tell me again how "They hardly did anything to the (looks of) Klingons." ;)

Though I don't agree with him giving off Orville vibes -- Disco Pike isn't an Average Joe -- I do agree with the rest of what you say. Before, you've compared Pike in "The Cage" to Bruce Wayne and Batman. The Pike in Discovery reminds me more of Clark Kent and Superman.

In fact, given how dark DSC was and how bright TOS was, last year I was telling my brother about how Discovery running into the Enterprise was like a crossover between Batman and Superman. Not the shitty movie that came out a few years ago or whatever they're doing in the comics now (please no one update me, because I really don't care :p ) but a crossover between the Post-Crisis '80s/'90s comic book versions. That's my time. Or maybe Michael Keaton's Batman meets Christopher Reeve's Superman.

Now it’s more like an early Silver Age teamup where they both have a good laugh at the end. And I’m loving it. :)

I give this a solid 8/10. It was by far the best episode of the show yet for me. I am going to just act like much of season one never existed. This would have worked far better as the pilot of the show to begin with.

The rest of the bridge crew got more lines and reactions then all of season one combined. It felt that way. I loved that they are trying to build a real crew, an ensemble cast. The effects felt very JJ as usual but in some ways even more. I didn't mind that at all though because I like that film style. The story was tight and they added the new cast member doctor in an interesting way. (I assume she is joining?) I enjoyed the fortune cookie. :)

I ding it because they said Enterprise had 200+ crewman. What? I also didn't like the turbo shaft scene. They don't need to make every shot an action scene. Just leave the freaking elevator as the elevator. The dead science officer's death was a little predictable. Saw that coming a long way off. Tily was a little annoying. The math thing. I mean really? Overall I enjoyed it.

    done reading up

to me it was obvious with the beaming in when that blue shirt turned out not to be spock that he was going to be dead meat. of course my reasoning for that went out of the window later.

my idea was if pike has to use a ship he does know nada about he brings on board a small personel staff (one red one blue) he knows. killing the science guy gives the writers an excuse to bring over a relatively junior spock in the next episode.

Episode starts off strong, but everything from basically the second they hit the asteroid field is just mindboggingly stupid bullshit. My eyes were almost rolling out of my head by the time they actually got to the asteroid and then was just laughing at how fucking stupid this show is during the Burnham escape sequence where she's jumping and running around a series of even more ridiculous setpiece obstacles, I then lost complete interest and went to browsing funny videos on my facebook feed while the show played in the background.

While the show is more lighthearted and the episode was entertaining in a way. (and I legit think like the first 10 minutes of the episode were fine) To me this just shows they still have not learned really why Season 1 didn't work and why Discovery just is plain shit as a Star Trek show. This is generic sci-fi space opera schlock with a Star Trek skin.

4/10, literally because the first 10 minutes were good, Pike is entertaining and the VFX is truly astounding this time unlike the Xbox360 level VFX of S1.

How was S1 not ensemble? Just because the random background extras didn't have lines?

The Enterprise had 203 crew members under Pike. How is that a ding? Was spoken right out loud in The Cage / The Menagerie.

No that's not believable to me. They should go with the TOS regular crew size which is over 400. The Enterprise scale in this show is also much bigger than the ship in TOS. That does not work for me. I ding it for that.

No Season one was not ensemble for me. Not even a little. All those bridge officers in roll call should have had larger roles from day one. They are NOT random background extras and if they go back to being such I won't like this season much.

    Exactly.

It was something she chose to do on her own. It wasn't forced upon her. And she realized during her epiphany that it was all bullshit. She didn't need to conform to some false ideal that never existed. Which is what Discovery is all about. It's a rebuke against all the "bullshit" false ideals of Star Trek: everything from Gene's vision to the silly rules that "govern" the overly-simplistic idealism to the rigid adherence to certain production practices. And [her] hair was the perfect representation of that. Not only because it's so obvious and in your face, but because hair - especially that of the principal woman actors - has been a huge point of contention throughout the franchise's history.

Just look at Discovery and all the 'arguments' the fanbase has had over hairy things during the last two years. Which, again, I'll point out that is the point. But beyond that, you have all the years of nefarious shenanigans the women actors have had to put up, going all the way back to GLW literally being fired over the color of her hair -- after having to put up with having that ridiculous thing atop her head for those first bunch of episodes. Both Sirtis and Visitor received huge unfair criticisms over their hair over the years from both the producers and the fans. And while Jeri never had any issues with her hair specifically, what they did to her was in the same spirit but much worse. And of course, Nichols has plenty of horror stories about them forcing appearance changes on her of her own.

But Micheal's change wasn't just her becoming herself, it was also SMG being allowed to be her self. As is. No tweaking required. The allegory here is arguing @Nyotarules very point.

So you’re dinging it for being accurate to the canon?

That must be a first for Discovery
