Tuvok, he seemed to keep his ship safe and had a knack to investigate. Odo seemed to have all kinds of reasons when he didn't do his job right.

Worf. Odo was great in more of an old timey sheriff kind of way.

This is why in my TOS Chronology, I try to fit Kirk into as many different positions aboard ship as I can before he becomes Captain of the Enterprise. Navigator, Helmsman, Sciences, Security, Assistant Engineer, First Officer... It all went towards making him the best Captain in the Fleet. And as Chekov was originally supposed to be very much the next generation's "Jim Kirk in Training," I figure that Kirk had a similar background of bouncing around to as many different jobs as he could, just to learn everything he could about how a ship best functions.

I can't say I ever remember Chekov having anything to do with security in TOS? In the Mirror Universe it seemed he and Sulu ran security but not in the prime reality! If we're going for best security chief then I'm calling David Garrovick or Giotto but certainly not Lt.Dickerson who looked like he could confuse Stan Laurel!!! :wtf:

It didn't take much to confuse Stan Laurell as he always looked confused as things were falling apart around him... essentially because of what he had done.

    I like Odo
But I'll go for Reed because I don't feel he gets the love on here

    I voted Odo.

Every security officer was competent for the majority of cases, but a few made some pretty major errors that led to either the ship being taken over or somebody escaping. Like if Tuvok hadn't made the mistake in False Profits the journey would have been four years shorter.

Odo had the most difficult job, and the station was still taken over less often than the much more controllable Enterprises and Voyager.

I remember Worf interfering with Odo's business as security officer aboard DS9 when he was new there. Odo was justifiably annoyed.

Tuvok for me. I'd hate to have a driven, focused Vulcan trying to keep me from committing crime.
Honorable Mention to Checkov. In one of the books he was the head of security and all the names of his team members were the names of NHL players.

It's difficult for me to think of anyone other than Odo for this. I think Tuvok is more deserving than Worf though. I'm glad Voyager brought a Vulcan back to the bridge and in a different role than Spock. I enjoyed the logical methodology of Tuvok's investigations. I was never impressed by Worf's security prowess during TNG's run (not that it was much of a focus). While I adore the character, my favorite memories of him are from the later TNG episodes and naturally his move to DS9, where he blossomed.

On one hand, you have Worf spying on Odo's investigation and making it fail in "Hippocratic Oath", but on the other hand, you have Worf maintaining the investigation on track and solving it in "CrossFire" when Odo had completely dropped the ball and hijacked it for his own purposes.

    So it's a wash!

They all had their failures. Anyone one of the incidences would have gotten our guy fired at work. Starfleet's too soft.
