CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar 2 - Electric Boogaloo-Fanboys gone WILD-too many hyphens

Came here to say this for sure. There is a facet of pride that comes along with it and to admit being wrong is a huge blow. So, they have to turn it around on others in order to support their own pride. As much as Alec is a con man I still feel like his pride got tied in to this project and now he can't not go forward.

 

Point of Order:

Paramount is the company that gave us those 50+ years of Star Trek. CBS had nothing to do with it until they lucked into the Trek TV rights in the Viacom break up. The only Trek CBS ever originated is Discovery. If you want to thank them for that and thank them for more of it, feel free. Personally, I'd rather curse them for it.

That said, I'd be worried if we're going to start assuming anyone who is anti-Discovery is pro-Axanar, as I'm on record as stating I have no use for either of them. I think they're both cynical, dishonest cash grabs filled with things that have nothing to do with the Trek I want to see, and if they both got dropped into a fiery chasm to the center of the Earth, I would be sitting on the edge in a lawn chair with popcorn and a Cherry Coke and I'd applaud when the chasm closed up on them.

 

It was actually a Desilu/NBC partnership; at first. Paramount bought it out years later when it acquired Desilu.

 

When I said CBS I meant the people who own and have owned Star Trek going all the way back to Desilu.
And CBS has given us a lot more than Discovery, it's also given us TOS and TNG Remastered, Star Trek Online, and every book and comic that has come out since 2006, which have included some of the absolute best Trek stories ever. Destiny and most of Vanguard were released under CBS and for that alone they will always have my gratitude.
Technically, it is actually still the same company, they just changed the name when they split off from Viacom. If what I read on Memory Alpha is correct, Star Trek has never actually been sold or anything like that, it's just been part of companies that were bought out by other companies (Desilu - Paramount) or part of a split in one company (Paramount - CBS Television Studios).

 

Fair enough. Still not CBS.

Then say that. Giving proper credit is important.

And i think TOS remastered wrecked the series in an attempt to make it look "pretty."

Which i played once and found hopelessly boring...

And I've never read any of those novels, and i haven't read a Trek comic since DC was publishing them back in the olden days.

And again, feel free to do so. I don't share your gratitude.

One parent company (Viacom) and two subsidiaries (Paramount and CBS) and while they share the same parent, Paramount and CBS are not the same company. They are two different companies that hold two diifferent aspects of the Trek brand. The one that holds the TV aspect (CBS) is the one that you think has earned your thanks. It's also the one that foisted Discovery on us. Thanks, but I'll just keep waiting for the fiery chasm.

 

OK, fine. I was just trying to say that I have no hard feelings towards whoever owns Star Trek, and I really didn't feel like going through the entire history and structure of CBS, Paramount, and Viacom in order to do that.

I am thankful for Star Trek, from all the companies that gave it and in all incarnations up to and including Discovery. In addition, I wish zero ill will towards any product I do not personally enjoy, and find the celebration of wishing for its destruction to be disturbing at best, and clinically significant at worst.

 

This. There's a very broad, thick, mile wide line between "I don't like Discovery," or even "Discovery sucks" and "I hate Discovery, and you're not a real fan if you like it, and REAL TRUE STAR TREK comes from <insert fan production here> and Discovery needs to die it's an abomination!"

We're seeing far more of the latter on that page (sadly), but more of the former here. I like Discovery despite some of the issues I have with it, but I've yet to see a perfect Star Trek series. All of them have some kind of hangup somewhere. Just enjoy the ones you like, ignore the ones you don't. The idea of wanting a show to die because I don't like it, even if it means making thousands or millions of other viewers sad is awful.

 

It started a little rough, but by the end I was enjoying Discovery quite a bit, and Season 2 looks like it's going to be awesome.

CBS legally own Star Trek. Alec Peters was running a buisness entirely off of CBS' intellectual property, paid for by fan donations, complete with merchandise, healthcare for himself and salaries for himself and his friends. Whatever CBS makes or merchandises with Star Trek, it's their legal right to do so.

 

And I never said it wasn't. All I said was CBS is not responsible for creating any trek that existed before they acquired the rights so unlike the person I was responding to I'm not going to thank them for it. That doesn't mean I think they're wrong for protecting what they own. It just means they only originated a fraction of what they're protecting.
