Could never be sure about this one. Is that a toilet joke?

Resigned sarcasm. He obviously isn't going to say no after all they went through to get to that point.

I don't like to think of it as ruining the episodes. More like we were given extras long after we had thought we had seen it all. :techman:

It was more Kirk’s reaction. I always took it to mean asking ‘where’s the bathroom?’

I should watch it again, like I need an excuse.

I have to be honest, I have no clue what you are getting at here?

They had all just sacrificed their careers, and possibly freedom. Kirk, his ship and son on top of that. "Hell of a time to ask." was the perfect response to the dangers the Vulcan priestess just presented.

McCoy had already responded to the priestess. He’d committed to the process the moment they broke him out of his cell abound for the promised land.

After answering the priestess, McCoy had a private silent exchange with Kirk, and said, to Kirk, as an aside, “hell of a time to ask”, Kirk responded with a knowing “oh”, and McCoy took his place in the fal tor pan.

I took that as him needing the loo, but it being an inappropriate time to ask. Which is entirely consistent with McCoy’s dry wit.

I could be completely wrong, but I don't think that is what the response meant.

That thought never crossed my mind. McCoy is just dryly pointing out that they never actually asked him prior to making a big ceremony of it.

Not that he would have ever refused, but still . . . :)

When McCoy said "I choose the danger," I always thought Kirk had an expression of concern that kind of said, "Are you sure?"

Did McCoy really have a choice? I imagine having Spock rattling around inside his head would've eventually drove him insane.

At that point in the plot, they were just hoping to get Spock's katra out of McCoy's head. Nobody knew yet that Spock's physical body had been resurrected, let alone that the only way to put Spock together again was some highly dangerous ceremony that had not been performed successfully since ancient times. And that would put McCoy's life at risk.

Just extracting the katra was apparently a routine procedure. The whole fal-tor-pan thing was an entirely different story. McCoy was just joking about the high priestess putting him on the spot like that. Pretty sure it was never intended to be a toilet joke.

I loved McCoy's response to Kirk's rant about being assigned a female yeoman in Corbomite because it was subtle and spot on. It's a shame that they couldn't have kept the frisson bubbling along at this low level in a few more episodes of season two and three.

A little moment I love at the end of "Amok Time" is when Kirk reveals himself to Spock in sickbay, Spock drops all pretense of being unemotional and instinctively lets out a jubilant "JIM!" at seeing his captain and friend alive again. It's made all the better by the staging. Shatner crosses in front of Nimoy for a second, so the transition of unemotional Spock to joyful Spock is hidden from the viewer. His ear-to-ear grin has much more surprise and impact because of it.

A lot of these responses remind me how much more enjoyable McCoy was in the movies than in TOS. However, in Amok Time, he's wonderful, particularly in that turbolift exchange mentioned above. Ironically, he's also terrific in the other "Vulcan Episode," JTB. "That hurts worse than the uniform" and him asking Spock how to do the salute in the first place are another great little moment.

McCoy was awesome from his very first scene in the Corbynite ;) Manoeuvre.

“If I jumped every time I saw a flashing light I’d end up talking to myself”

The campfire scene in TVH is wonderful to watch too.

"A PIECE OF THE ACTION" - When Spock tells Kirk, as he parked the car, "You are an excellent starship commander, but your driving leaves much to be desired."

That moment never gets old for me.

For me it's that Kirk can't drive. He can pilot a starship, but he can't drive. It's a really good instance of the writers surprising us by not having Kirk be good at everything.

I loved that part about it, too. It humanizes Kirk, in a sense, since we always view Captains as larger than life.
