If past history is any judge, Marvel Studios has largely tried to avoid treading on the grounds already mapped out by other Studios movies. Given that, I doubt that Marvel will ever do the Dark Phoenix Saga. At least not for a very long time. That being the case, I'd like to see it done decently at least once before the whole thing reboots.

That's not exactly a bad thing.

I mean, it isn't like the X-Men don't have plenty of OTHER great stories.

Not disagreeing. I desperately want to see the MCU X-Men move away from Magneto and Wolverine (and especially Mystique) and cover new ground.

I want the MCU X-Men to begin with a focus on the 05. Scott, Jean, Hank, Warren and Bobby. 5 normal teens who suddenly find their entire existence upended by circumstances beyond their control, and their struggle to find their new place in the world. Xavier should be a supporting character and his disagreements with Magneto in the background.

For Wolverine, start off with some solo movies completely separate from the X-Men. Show him having Indiana Jones style adventures throughout the decades (Madripoor!) before putting him in the middle of the struggle for mutant survival.

That said, I don't have a problem with seeing a potential course correction on the botched Dark Phoenix storyline from Fox. It could be a good way to cap off the franchise. I'd love to see them end with a better and more relevant installment than Apocalypse.

I hope we get adult X-Men. Teen Spidey is bad enough, but even the terrible Ultimate X-Men comic didn't make most of the team teens. The X-Men don't have the bizarre association with being teens as Spider-Man does, and the MCU doesn't need more teens. I hope we get a classic X-Men line up, as adults. Maybe don't go for Wolverine, but besides that go for a classic Claremont line up, or a mix of that and classic. Something like Cyclops, Jean, Rogue, Beast, Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus, Shadowcat, and maybe a lesser known final entry (someone like Siryn or Sunfire maybe, or go Iceman but go with the modern version and not someone who only exists to be a love interest like the FOX movies did).

I'm pretty sure everyone will be adults this time, they were teens in the '80s, and we're into the '90s now. I guess something could have happened to stop them from aging, but that seems unlikely, or do you just consider people teens until they're 30?
    Because they're awesome?

I'm talking about the MCU X-Men, and how I don't want them to be teens. That said, Apocalypse was pretty bad, and they were mostly teens in that, although of all the movie's problems, teen crap really wasn't one of them.

Jennifer Lawrence gives less of a shit in the X-men movies then Bruce Willis does in, well, anything nowadays. I have never seen anyone phone in a roll as badly as she has been doing. Plus, Mystique is just written badly. They wanted a Hugh jackman replacement, and Lawrence had gotten big making shitty YA movies, so they made her character the new "star" even though nothing justified it. FOX never understood the idea of an ensemble film, so hopefully the MCU will realize that there doesn't need to have a "focus" character in the X-Men, so we won't get another "bored actor gets focus because they're famous, but put no effort into getting their paycheck" situation like with Lawrence in the current X-Men films.

At least when Wolverine was the focus Jackman always gave a shit and did the best job possible, even in crap movies like Wolverine Origins.

They could always start introducing certain X-Characters as supporting/guest characters in other movies before they join the MCU X-Men. Like have Storm show up in one of the BP sequels, maybe have Wolverine show up in one of the Cap sequels (assuming Bucky becomes Cap), etc.

∆Wolverine could show up in World War 2 flashbacks with Dum Dum Dugan and the Howling Commandos.

And speaking of Black Panther, I wonder if Adamantium is about to be introduced into the MCU, or Wolverine's claws will be vibranium?

Neither Star Trek or X-Men has been rebooted, though.

The only time Marvel Studios has adapted a property previously tackled by another studio is Daredevil, and they absolutely retread ground that had previously been covered.

    Spider-Man? Ghost Rider? Hulk's origin?

Oh, yes, you're going to be pedantic (as usual) and say that Homecoming is not a Marvel Studios film. OK, let me re-phrase. If history is any judge, Kevin Feige has largely tried to avoid treading on the grounds already mapped out by other Studios movies.

I've already responded to you to much for one day, so as much as I want to counter all of you're points here I'm just going to say I disagree and move on.

This is how I feel pretty much every time I make the mistake of responding to one of Kirk's posts.

Huh? How are those situations comparable? Star Trek rebooted itself (i.e. created an alternate timeline) after one film and then in the very next one featured Khan. Here, the series was semi-rebooted with X-Men: First Class eight years ago. Now, three films later, we're getting a new version of a classic X-Men storyline. It's been 12 years since X-Men: The Last Stand. Sony simply waited five years to reboot Spider-Man.

Neither of the films you mention by name - Star Trek '09 or First Class - were reboots.

Yeah, I get it. (And why did I think you or someone else was going to be nitpicky and mention that?)

I mention the word "reboot" loosely. Star Trek rebooted the Star Trek film franchise, which was dead after Star Trek Nemesis. Yes, it didn't reboot them wholesale narratively speaking, but it was a reboot in concept with a brand new cast, brand new approach to The Original Series, etc. The "alternate timeline" plot device was a brilliant way to do a clean slate while still honoring what came before.

X-Men: First Class was a "semi-reboot" in the sense that it also brought on new actors, a new setting, and a brand new aesthetic/vibe while still honoring what came before. In a way, Days of Future Past was a slightly harder reboot because it also erased the previous films, but First Class felt like a palate cleanser in the sense that Matthew Vaughn brought a James Bond sensibility to an X-Men film. Studio execs and filmmakers threw about these terms loosely, given that both films essentially restarted both franchises.

I look forward to the upcoming argument discussing the minutiae of why the term "reboot" was "improperly" utilized on my behalf. :)

EDIT: When I describe First Class as a "semi-reboot", I am describing it that way because of how I've heard it described elsewhere, i.e. here, here, and here.

It's not just the last couple X-Men movies. Lawrence has been phoning it in for pretty much every role lately. Which is a shame, really. She was good back when she gave a f---: Winter's Bone/First Class/Silver Linings Playbook/early Hunger Games. Especially Winter's Bone.

Willis waited until he was twenty-some years into being famous before he stopped caring. Lawrence gave up in less then five.

Simon Kinberg has been making the rounds trying to hype up the Dark Phoenix trailer, and dropped this little gem:
    https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/09/27/gambit-movie-will-be-a-romantic-comedy-says-producer

Make of it what you will, and we'll see if they actually start filming it next year before Disney takes control, but unlike the reboot/retread debate about Dark Phoenix, at least they seem to be aiming to continue in the Deadpool/Logan/New Mutants vein of trying to put a different spin on Marvel movies.

The article also mentions that they're still working on the script for Multiple Man, so that project may not be 100% dead yet either.

Quite to the frustration of many Marvel tv fans, Marvel Studios has never even mentioned Daredevil.

The distinction seems to be fairly concrete these days.

Adamantium will be a ridiculously hard to realize form of Vibranium. Or maybe just an alien metal. Or an alloy of Vibranium with an alien metal.
