I always thought though that as Sulu did flash his ID when he asked the guard where Kirk was, and asked him to get him that the guard should have noticed the rank. At the very least he could have called him Commander Tiny

It was from The Voyage Home, right after the opening scene with the Saratoga discovering the Whale Probe:

I don't recall Kirk flipping Faga's character, just punching him out.

It was brief but it would have pulled her out of the background. I was disappointed that they did not tempt her (or a few of the other cast members) back for STVI. It would have been really cool to have all the original characters in the final movie.

By VI she was Lwxana and Gene and Majel were more distant from the movies...nor did she need the paycheck as much. Rand is still present on Excelsior.

Majel had the job of voicing the Enterprise computer over on TNG, plus a full-on Lwaxana episode ("Half a Life") during the same timeframe as TUC's production. Not to mention that Gene was in seriously poor health by mid-1991, so she may not have wanted to appear as Chapel in addition to all the other stuff she had going on.

Yeah I think the reality was that she was way more into TNG and had a lot on her plate. She thought Chapel was dull compared to Lwaxana. It does give me a pang when I don't see her and Grace's names in the signatures at the end. Without Grace we'd have had no iconic mini skirts which definitely contributed to the show's popularity and Majel had been a support player in every incarnation up to TWOK.

I think their absence does partly demonstrate why little scenes with the support players like Sulu's are important to maintain the profile and popularity of the characters.

The script of Phase II In Thy image had quite a few character moments that didn't make it into TMP.

Don't forget that Roddenberry strongly objected to many of the story points in STVI. I'm sure that Majel not being in the movie was a show of solidarity more than anything else.

It is worth noting that though they have no dialogue, both Chapel and Rand join their former crewmates on the floor of the chamber after the charges are formally dropped. The last time the whole of the Original Series cast as seen together as a group. :techman:

Actually I think it is the FIRST and last time on screen. The only other time was the promo shots for TMP. You only see Majel enter the bridge in TMP on the SLV I think, and no Grace. What a missed opportunity. I would have loved to see one final shot of everyone visible on the bridge at the same time at the end of TMP before Kirk gives his final order.

Seconded. Trying to come up with ideas for future fashion is one thing, but that "pilgrim on crack" look simply did not suit him whatsoever. To say nothing of the salmon puke color of the thing, doesn't go with his skin hue at all... a shame this website did not exist in 1983:

Majel, as Dr Chapel, escorts Sarek into the Council Chambers. It's in the comic adaptation.

The film needed some comic relief, nothing less, nothing more.

It's a great scene that kicked off the exciting and well-paced heist sequence of stealing the Enterprise. It's fun, exciting, and recalls the energy of TOS.

    Anything else is over-analysis.

I am not a member of the 'in the future human beings will be stop being obnoxious' club, so its a real scene of some asshole human interaction, plus it was funny at the time.

But really, why would they realistically be included, though? Rand was in 12.5 episodes, and had quick cameos in a few of the movies. Chapel was a recurring character, also with quick cameos in the movies. It would be like expecting Timothy Brown and Jeff Maxwell to have gotten star billing in the M*A*S*H finale. We remember them because we're fans, but their overall impact on the specific show is minimal at best.

Grace was instrumental in getting the mini skirt look onto the screen. I consider the impact of that to be monumental.

More generally, I'm not a fan of minimising the impact of women in sci fi, as I'm sure is painfully obvious to anyone who reads my forum posts. Just watched an episode of Timeless this morning about the moon landing reminding me of the themes from Hidden Figures. Their contribution may have limited by the sexism of the time but their contribution overall should not be trivialised.

I'm part way through Grace's autobiography and, even though she only appeared in the first half of season one that's still 1/6 of the show's run and she was the female lead.

Having rewatched season one recently as well. It's quite disturbing how often the yeoman character is a victim of sexual assault and how often her repressed desire for Kirk rears it's head (especially if you include Helen Noel which was originally intended to be Rand it totals 7 out of 12 yeoman appearances). I completely believe her detailed account of the sexual assault she suffered because you can see her character being stalked on screen by someone with influence over story points through the plots they included for her. There's even some anecdotal evidence that some of her lines and role were trimmed to keep her more under Kirk's thumb such not letting her sit at the science station like many other fill in characters.

I think Grace and Majel earned their names on that roster.

As an aside, Grace was a talented comedienne and I think if Rand had stayed, she would have naturally led to more little character moments like this one. Hell, Rand was transporter chief in TMP, she could even have been the one to stay behind in TSFS to free up Uhura for the escape.
