^Patterns of Force is one of my favorite episodes of TOS, I think it is one of the best parallel Earth stories featured on Star Trek. How could anyone dislike an episode where Spock tells Kirk that he "makes a convincing Nazi"?

Not to mention the subtext of Shatner and Nimoy having such a conversation! Humor aside, I find the episode to be too in the nose. It's good, but hamfisted.

I've never liked Darmok. It's cornball and annoying. I like the concept and message of it all, but it comes off as lame B rate sci-fi.

I also don't understand what people like about Arena. Are people trying to be ironic by liking it? I don't get.

Well, as far as I remember "Arena" brings up a clear statement against violence and speaks up for solving conflicts the civilized way. That is the core of Star Trek and an important message which is and will probably always be relevant.

Arena is my favorite TOS episode. It's got everything that made TOS great. I know some people might not be able to look past the suit and some of the fights scenes, but if you can there's more depth than you'd expect from a story where Kirk fights a lizard man. The only thing I didn't really like were the Metrons, they felt a bit out of place.

"In a Mirror, Darkly". Because they didn't make me care at all about the Mirror Universe version of the characters and all that leaves is a fanwank explosion of classic Trek sets. TOS made me care, DSC did too. ENT failed and I'm not sure they really tried. The closest to a sympathetic character was Captain Forrest because he was soft on obvious gold digger Hoshi.

Soval's "...no." when the Deiant appears is utterly hilarious, however.

It also has a very cool lizard-monster--and Kirk builds a bazooka from stuff he finds lying around. It's tense and exciting with, yes, a nice humanitarian moral at the end.

Always one of my favorite episodes as a kid.

I think Arena is recognized so much for being "great" so much as it is the definitive classic Trek episode - or rather, it's Star Trek at its most "iconic."

I swear, if I hear one more person talk about how classic and wonderful "City On the Edge of Forever" is, I'm going to pop a vein. It's just a time travel reset episode based on an unproduceable script written by an eternally pissed off curmudgeon. It's not that great.

^It may not be the best but The City on The Edge of Forever certainly ranks as one of the most memorable and dramatic episodes of TOS, and I don't care who wrote it.

But the conflict between the TOS creators and the guy who wrote it is one of the reasons why it's memorable. Without that, it's just another time travel reset episode, and Tomorrow is Yesterday is a better one.

The focus of the drama isn't on what they're resetting, it's on what they have to do to reset it.

    Disagree

Yes, Kirk has to let a woman he falls in love with in a week die to save the future, because he loved her, right? More than the thirty or so other women he's going to fall in love with over the next two seasons?

It's shocking once. Getting beat over the head with it every time the "Best Epsiodes" are discussed is starting to grate.

Actually, more a short-barrel, large caliber musket. A bazooka is either a shoulder-fired rocket launcher, or a crude wind instrument invented by Bob Burns.:nyah::lol:

This. And I like "Tomorrow is Yesterday", but "City..." is just working on a different dramatic level.

In addition to what you wrote, the "Arena" had, imo, the most exciting action packed scene in all of TOS.

I am talking about the scene where Kirk and the landing party beamed down to that outpost and found it in ruins. First of all, that set was beautifully done. And it was actually outdoors, not in a sound stage. There were explosions here and there. Kirk and Spock had to run around and dodge incoming fire. Loved the way Kirk zigged and zagged. Spock moved around like a lumbering oaf. It was all very exciting.

The scene still looks impressive to me after so many viewings.

From what I have read, there are many people who saw that as Stewart's tour de force performance. I wasn't that impressed with the performance or the story though. I think it was trying too hard to be an epic story. Didn't like the flute playing either.

I was much more impressed by Stewart's performance in the "There are four lights" episode "Chain of Command" than what I saw in "Inner Light".

    The Inner light is awful

Also Chain of Command is a bit meh. I actually only rewatch that episode because i enjoy watching ronny cox bust some heads.
