Something I'd never thought about until going back and re-reading some of these books. Were there originally only going to be eight books, since "War" and "Peace" aren't listed on the cover for each book?

In fact, there were originally going to be 12, but one duology was dropped and the final one was compressed to one book (though it also spawned Articles of the Federation as a separate thing).

It’s too bad that that duology by Dafyyd ab Hugh was dropped. It could’ve “redeemed” him after “Rebels”.

I haven't thought of Dafydd ab Hugh in years.

I reread Fallen Heroes a couple years back for my Deep Space Nine rewatch. It holds up!

Ab Hugh’s “Balance Of Power” and “Vengeance” are pretty good. But the “Rebels” trilogy, when I was reading it, felt like it had been started by someone else (like Robert Sheckley) and then ab Hugh had been called in to finish it.

I like Ds9 Fallen heroes by Dafydd ab Hugh but when it comes to his last Ds9 novel Warped I didn't like that one very much when I reread it again a few years ago.

Warped was written by K.W. Jeter, not Dafydd.

Rebels isn't great, but I liked a scene in one of those novels where the Defiant crew take the ship into an alien world's ocean to escape the Cardassians.

I actually kind of liked Warped. Though some say I'm sort of warped myself :guffaw:

Actually I did like it. I'm a big horror movie fan and it certainly had horror elements to it. But sometimes I like things that most people don't. (see my signature line below....and I'm one of the 2 people on this Earth that liked Exorcist II: The Heretic). I know I shouldn't like some of the things I do but I can't help it sometimes.

I actually thought the "A Time To.." series had a nice balance of stories. I'm not sure how much further they could have taken it. And as Christopher noted led into "Articles of Federation" which I considered sort of a bridge between those books and the pre-Destiny novels, though just as important to the overall relaunch narrative.

I liked it too, except for that bit where O'Brien makes a racial slur against one of his own men (he doesn't actually say it, but he does think it).

Fallen Heroes is great. All of his other Trek is either not good, Rebels trilogy, or I don't remember it at all, Balance of Power and Vengeance.

No, it was where a crewman flubs a quote from Shakespeare. The guy says "Lead on, Macbeth" and O'Brien (while not actually saying anything) thinks "That's LAY ON, you illiterate Welshman."

I imagine the author of Welsh origin though?

That sounds exactly like what would occur as I can't imagine the gentle ribbing of individuals from the different nations in the British and Irish isles would change anytime soon. Also, it's not a "racial slur" given both Welsh and Irish (as well as the Scots) are of Celtic origin and all make up the same ridiculous classification that is "race."

That's not any more racist than calling someone a redneck or a yankee in the US.
