It's called being a prequel. If they were really interested in doing totally new stories not connected to TOS, they would have set the show after Nemesis, not just a few years before TOS.
Great trailer!! You can certainly see where they might have gone over budget. Did not at all expect Pike to be temporary captain but I'm not against it. I was hoping we'd see the Enterprise and Discovery cruising around together though. Maybe we still will when Pike leaves. I'm also glad Michael is still front and center like she should be. Still the main character haters and that doesn't seem like it will be changing at all. I think during the panel they even hinted that she is intended to become captain. It really is just a matter of when I think. Maybe at the end of this season? Can't wait to find out. The overall tone of Discovery was changing toward the end of season 1 due to the events changing. The war is over. Things weren't darker just for the sake of being darker. The situation the crew was it determined things. I still expect the series to be serious, darker then past treks and still graphic when appropriate. It's not going to suddenly 180 now that the characters are allowed to be more relaxed. Also that elevator scene has been done before in other shows/movies. It's not something specific to one show.
Yeah, it's definitely closer to the Kelvin (or ST09) effect. This is basically Kurtzam's vision as opposed to [trying best to match] Fuller's vision. I think he was probably more involved in 09's creative process than any of us realize, or was at least heavily influenced by it. And when I see something like the elevator scene, my first instinct is to directly make that connection.
Oh, I don't know about that, JD. I suspect it was just the necessity to keep a new series in the era of what's currently being sold as "STAR TREK." Why go a thousand years in the future, when what's hot is the 23rd Century. But you may have a point there, I just don't see the point of bringing the sequels era and universe into it.
Never would have imagined myself preferring Kurtzman's vision to Fuller's. That is if he does have a large part in the direction of this season. This new trailer definitely gives me renewed hope.
What's so great about Fuller? Honestly, his ideas for Trek sounded terrible. Kurtzman may indeed be the lesser of two evils. He seems to have a better understanding of what Star Trek is, instead of trying to be edgy and reinvent it into something it's not.
I saw someone pissed at the Star Trek Adversaries game cover because Burnham was there along with the previous main characters, because she wasn't the captain. Well, if you purposely redefine the lineup to be something different, of course she doesn't fit. But it's not "captains" but "main characters".
She may be the main character on paper, but Pike will steal her thunder easily. Hopefully they don't write him off unceremoniously like they did with Jason Isaacs. Let's hope not. She would be the dullest Captain in the franchise history.
Hmm, a bit cheesy- not the usual Star Trek cheesy, but in the dorky show thinks it's cool way. I wouldn't get too bothered by the music- I doubt they're going to be playing Lenny Kravitz during upcoming Disco episodes. (But with Kurtzman, who knows?) As someone who isn't enthused by the maudlin pop song montages in the likes of Walking Dead, I sincerely hope this trend doesn't become part of Trek. Mount looks like a solid choice. Er, not terribly inspired by producers who feel the need to recycle the old "Funny Alien Makes Snot" gag, as seen in Trek Beyond. There isn't that much else to be gleaned, other than it looks like they'll try to make Disco more "fun" and peppy. "Math is f*ckin' rad, y'all!" (Cue the "OMG I heart Tilly" tweets.) I'll try to say something else positive... Linus looks neat, hilarious mucus aside.
Food for thought: Pike's "Hit it" is obviously derivative of "Punch it." But consider this Pike didn't base his entire career on the Narada attack suggesting he might be a bit more even-keeled and prone to less aggressive language.
The damn Klingons at times seemed to take over TNG and DS9. We had appearances by Scott, Sarek and Spock. They lifted an entire plot from TOS.
TOS character revisits were just those few, with Scotty's episode having been one dip into the well too many, as it were. Spock and Sarek would've been alive in TNG's time and not "illogical" to include them. Although I will be the first to admit that there episodes were not that great. Uhm ... Bones' passing the torch, I could've done without, but they felt it important that the first series sequel get TOS' blessing ... what can you do, you know? But I agree entirely about TNG and, especially DS9, being entirely too dependent on the Klingons. Yes, TNG relied on that TOS staple almost regularly so ... you definitely got me, there.
“Hit it” or “engage” ? Pike has (now) been known to say both - not to mention “punch it”. Would it be too Picard-esque for Pike to say “engage”?
Engage it at time warp factor 4? You think Pike remembers doing the time warp? Drinking those moments when... with doctor Boyce? I bet he’d want to do the time warp again. I’m sorry.
