For its various flaws (as if that's something new for Trek movies), I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. Especially Cumberbatch's performance.

i'll tell you a story:

i bought tickets for a group of friends for opening night of into darkness. right when we arrived at the theater i started to feel a little queasy. when the movie started playing, i had to run out of the theater and vomit. i returned to the theater, watched a bit more, then ran out again to vomit some more. this happened 4 or 5 times.

but i stuck with it, annoyed the hell out of the people in my row because i kept blocking their view running to the bathroom over and over again. but dammit, it was star trek.

from that day forward, my friends and i referred to it as "star trek into barfness".

i didn't even realize spock prime was in it until i saw it again a few nights later.

 

Wow, I've never heard of anyone having such a strong physical reaction to a movie!

by that you must mean the superhuman strength to keep watching despite uncontrollable vomiting.

 

This was the first movie were I really encountered toxic attitudes of fandom. I thoroughly enjoyed ST 09, owned two copies, bought merchandise, etc. Then, as the promo for ST ID started the naysayers on a board I was attending (not this one) pretty much tore it to shreds prior to it even being released. I got so down about the film that I just skipped it for a month. And, I regret that choice.

It amazes me how much negativity there can be around one film. It is incredibly fun, a wonderful continuation of Nu-Kirk's journey and self-sacrifice, as well as Spock's journey of the intensity of his emotions, and what his breaking points might be. These are very flawed people who are discovering their flaws. Makes them far more relatable for me.

 

I only saw it 5 years ago today, and never again.

 

Other than Spock's ridiculous "Khaaaaaaan!" scream which couldn't have been timed worse and Kirk's death being undone immediately, I loved this movie so much. Doesn't feel like it's been 5 years.

 

I still remember busting out laughing in the theater when Spock had his "KHAAAAAAAAN" moment. It was completely un-earned and worse than some of the bits of fanfilms that some criticize for being fanwanky.

Apart from that, I quite enjoyed STID that first time I saw it theatrically.

 

Carol's underwear may be the one thing that is most remembered about this movie.

Too bad.

 

There are two completely different views of ID that I hold:

Everything before the "KHAAAAAANNNN" yell and everything after.

Before is a fun, interesting and thrilling adventure continuing in the style and tone of the 2009 movie.

After is pretty much the worst minutes that Star Trek has ever put to film. I'd rather watch Picard dance the mambo and sing HMS Pinafore for 20 mins than watch the conclusion of ID.

It's a shame, because it's the only part of the 3 JJ films I don't like.

I love this film. Hands down my favorite of the three so far. It had its faults sure, but there is no perfect movie out there as that's pretty darn impossible (though Lord of the Rings came pretty close). There were a few too many fanboy moments and I wish Khan hadn't been Khan but a rogue section 31 agent with an axe to grind, but what can you do, as I said too many fanboys in charge. It still had so many other things to offer and it had such rich character growth. I could go on, but I won't bother since most posting here hate this film anyway

very good technical movie.

story telling aspect was kind of meh.

Did not like the khan scream and kirk's 5 minutes death either.

 

I enjoyed the movie, despite its many shortcomings. My fondest memory, however, was going to see it a second time in 2D in a small, empty theatre at a 10am show, followed by a quesadilla and three margarita lunch.

 

I’ve seen every official iteration of Trek several times over. Been watching since 1973. Into Darkness is my favourite of all the Trek films AND I’m even heretical enough to view Spock’s “Khan” moment as more appropriate in story to Kirk’s in TWOK.

 

Unabashed fan of the movie. It is a thrill ride that is fun to watch.

 

I've said elsewhere, there's a great film in there. I just found the callouts to TWOK cringe-inducing. As an old TOS fan who saw TWOK in the theaters, I'm not sure if it was a good call to appeal to nostalgia in this one. We hadn't really come to know this new crew enough, so NuKirk's sacrifice didn't have the emotional pull of Spock's in TWOK. I also felt it was backtracking to yet again have Kirk getting demoted be a part of the plot. It's choppy in terms of character growth.

That said, there's a lot to love. I wasn't crazy about it being Khan, but Bandycoot Cumberbund was great as usual, and I liked the timely message of the film, about becoming our enemies. STID is my least favorite of the new films, but I still pop it in the DVD player much more often than I will the TNG movies.
