Tarantino and Abrams to Do Next Trek Movie

Then again, Robert Wise was probably the biggest name director to ever helm a Trek movie, and yet the tv guy and the unknown arguably made the better Trek movie. (Yes, I would argue that directing THE SOUND OF MUSIC and WEST SIDE STORY and THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, not to mention editing CITIZEN KANE, trumps directing PULP FICTION.)

And I say that as somebody who really admires a lot of Wise's work.

 

As if higher ups in the studio, who's been in the business longer than the writer and the filmmaker, are demanding... bad input??? I guess the successful films the studio higher ups simply idle the landscape and allow the filmmakers to do whatever they want to do with their money? Sometimes it's simply the employee did a poor job, not the employer.

 

that's true though I think as good as Wise was Tarantino is almost in a league by himself. PLus Tarantino's style I think would be like a better written version of the Abrams movies with some slight increase in gore. Tarantino style can easy translate to summer blockbuster style of movies if he wanted and of course he also has the benefit of not having to stay 100% loyal to the old show since your no longer dealing with the orginal actors and the chemistry you expect to see between them.

People express skepticism at Tarantino doing Star Trek, but I think one of his life goals is guest-directing a franchise film (i.e. James Bond, Star Trek, the Dr. Phibes Extended Universe etc.)

 

I've heard they are the fiercest killers in the insect kingdom.

At least it seems Paramount is open to doing another if the script is right. I think they know that Into Darkness left a sour taste in some people's mouths (though the general audience seemed more accepting of it) and are aware that rushing Beyond out the door with poor planning and poor marketing hurt the box office of that film.

If they could write and correctly market a truly epic film, like maybe 2/3rds as epic as Infinity War, it's possible the film could hit 500 mil at the box office.

 

i think you are assuming too much self awareness. they're foot dragging (again). it could either really hurt the next movie (again) or look like a triumphant return, if they make it worth audiences showing up for.

 

Part of the reason they are foot dragging again is probably because at the beginning of 2017 all of Paramount's management and marketing team were replaced. That was quite the shake up that needed some time to smooth out I imagine. That's why since Dec we've been hearing more and more tidbits about Trek 4 instead of the dead silence for months on end, is that new management is getting the ball rolling after getting settled in.

From some folks I know, I've heard that there are 2 scripts, but one was a shelved but now reworked script (also now completed) for Beyond which could be adapted to a 4th movie, and the other is Taranitno's which is currently being written. I think maybe they will want to compare scripts when they are both done and see which one they want to go with.

 

i mean yeah, there were good reasons for the long delays: abrams was busy with super 8 between trek and into darkness and then there were all the problems with orci between into darkness and beyond. but justifiable as they may be (and baked into this franchise's DNA at this point), they really can't do anything but hurt enthusiasm and awareness.

i'm happy to hear all the rumblings though, it's not an accident. and that it's the kelvin timeline crew doing all the rumbling, has me leaning more and more to believing that it'll be this crew again.

 

More likely: Paramount is reviewing their assets. They're FUCKED. The only successfully growing franchise they have is Mission Impossible. Even Transformers is on a downturn recently! Star Trek is the only other big IP they actually have left. They have to consider their options...

Sounds like they're doing a bake-off similar to how Berman had Maurice Hurley and Braga/Moore fashion different takes on what would become Generations.

 

Much more likely that Pegg/Jung pitched an idea for ST4 that was basically shelved, and then Paramount caught word of Tarantino's idea and JJ and company found a way to put that into motion instead.

Meanwhile, the secrecy surrounding the project, combined with Paramount's leadership change and the cast's exclusion from any production information, causes people to speculate that multiple scripts for ST4 are still vying for contention.

After BEY, I doubt that.

Regardless of how much the fanbase appreciates Beyond (I love it), TPTB aren't jumping on the next Pegg project. They're moving forward with hiring a big time writer for hashing out Tarantino's idea and keeping everything sealed under lock and key. So everyone, including the actors who are excluded from the decision-making process, give interviews and stoke even more speculation about multiple scripts and potential projects.

But nothing that we've seen since the final box office returns of BEYOND leads us to believe that ST4 is happening in any way shape or form except for the Tarantino project. Paramount has done something to move the QT concept forward, but everything else has just been talked about in circular fashion.

And we know for a fact that Paramount has signed off on JJ meeting with Tarantino and setting up a prominent writer for his concept. And we know that's currently happening right now.

The only thing we know from the other project is that it was discussed before the underperforming box office returns from BEY (and, again, I love BEY).

If you were Paramount and JJ Abrams, which one would you pursue -- Simon Pegg or Quentin Tarantino?

 

Only way I can see them going with the Pegg script is if they want to do a comedy. Problem is Tarantino can do that as well.

From what I've been told, there is only one script now actively in development...Tarantino's. There is another script that was shelved which was going to be the movie that eventually became Beyond until it was shelved (J.D. Payne's and Patrick McKay's perhaps?). That shelved script was reworked after Beyond to be a potential 4th movie. That was shelved again, but a possible option. But as of right now, the Tarantino script is at the forefront of the running and currently being written by Mark L. Smith.
