Oh me too. Call me an old fuddy-duddy, but I enjoy having the physical object in-hand that I can play whenever I want. I'm leary of an all-streaming world that could suddenly disappear if something bad happened between here and there. Nothing can beat physical media, IMO.

 

I buy any new stuff on blu-ray when available. Older stuff that is less likely to get a remaster and therefore make sense on BD, I'll get on DVD.

At this point, I'm a little surprised studios aren't forgoing DVD's in favor of BD's what with the mass availability of blu-ray players and UHD TV's.

 

Maybe DVD production may simply be cheaper than a BD run? I do know that prices for BR writers and discs for personal use have come down significantly since they were first introduced. Perhaps there may be something cost prohibitive from a mass production POV that makes Fox think it's not worth the extra expense. Not really sure. Doesn't make any sense.

 

I noticed the last couple times the Wal-Mart where I work has reset the stock in Electronics, that we appear to be getting less and less Blu-Rays. I'm starting to wonder if maybe Blu-Rays just don't sell that well for some reason.

 

I think FOX quit putting their shows on Blu-ray a while back. While disappointing, I'll still pick up the show on DVD.

 

Over here, it doesn't seem to be just Fox. Quite a few series don't make Blu in the UK (though a few you can import as they don't seem quite as tight on region coding). With films, you're more likely to have blu or dvd, but there are still some examples that are dvd only. As for our local offline stores, they seem to have at least five times the amount of dvd's to blu

As for Orville, I'd prefer blu, but I am picking up the physical release either way.

 

There are quite a few people who even though they have a Blu-ray player are choosing to buy DVDs instead since DVDs are cheaper. And with physical media sales at an all time low, I can easily see the decision being made to favor DVDs since they work for people who own both DVDs and Blu-ray players, while Blu-rays only work on Blu-ray players.

 

American Horror Story is pretty much the only series Fox puts out on blu-ray consistently. The first two seasons of Fargo were on blu-ray but season three was dvd only. A number of shows had their first season on blu-ray only to go on dvd only for following seasons. Fox is the worst when it comes to putting shows on blu-ray. Warner Bros. is the best I think. A lot of their shows get blu-ray releases. And they also have Warner Archive that releases shows like iZombie, Lucifer and The 100 on blu-ray. Warner Archive is a manufactured-on-demand service.

 

Cost. I already have a DVD player but don't have a BLU-Ray player. Most of my family is the same way, and my mom is getting to the point of not buying physical media. However, my dad raids that $5 bin pretty much every trip.

 

It's probably Bortus' fault. He likes eating strange things and likely ate all the Bluray before the crew was able to stop him.

 

Studios wouldn't have this issue if they had simply committed to Blu-ray around 2010/11. Want the latest release? Buy it on Blu, or don't get it at all. They were able to cut the cord on VHS, never understood why they didn't do it with DVD.

It isn't like the tech and media is that much more expensive. Heck, I just bought an Ultra High-Definition (UHD) player for $85.

 

Bluray, believe it or not, is a 'niche' product - it has come nowhere near replacing DVD. It has a fraction of the market penetration - most houses have a player, computer or laptop capable of playing DVD, not so Bluray.

Staggering numbers of people appear to be content watching standard definition DVD on their shiny new HDTV's unaware of and unable to tell the difference.

4K ? Draw your own conclusions...

 

It is a niche product because the studios never cut off producing DVD's. Those same households that buy movies, would be buying Blu-rays now if there had been a concerted effort by studios to retire DVD.

 

This in a nutshell. It's mainly about the dollars.

 

And I'm one of them.

 

The thing is, DVD was a completely new form of media compared to VHS, so it was easy enough to discontinue VHS. That included public perception that it was an older technology needing replacement. Compare DVD to Blu-ray, and it's mostly seen as an upgrade rather than a whole new form of media. There's also the fact that I think marketing behind Blu-ray completely failed to educate. Most people I've talked to have no idea what Blu-ray is, and when they do see one, tend to refer them as DVDs. So, a large part of is public perception, and in the minds of people, DVD is still dominant.

Similar technology and concepts used, but in this case, instead of judgment by popular opinion, the data and algorithms being used to judge people is all controlled by the government.

 

Not a far cry away. After a generation or two people may just be conditioned to think its normal. One day the outcryvstarts sane. "This is madness, govt control is too much"

Then instead of calling for an end to the system they'll say

" WE SHOULD be the ones controlling the social credit system"
