It was a different part of China, according to the caption (it's a very big country), even though they probably used the same Vancouver location for both scenes. I think the caption said Yunnan Province, and Jiaju is in Hainan Province, which is a large island off the southernmost coast of China.

    They still looked cool, though.

Well, by this point, the time-loop genre is so tireworn they couldn't really avoid acknowledging the precedents. I liked it that Ray acknowledged TNG: "Cause and Effect," which is the obvious referent for a "ship blows up at the end of the loop" plot.

Having it all be a simulation was a bit of a fakeout, but it did make it a bit of a fresh take on the trope (although it's not the only show in the past couple of years whose time-loop episode turned out to be a computer simulation). The fact that it was done to serve a character-based goal made it feel more worthwhile, although it was really rather meta, with Gideon basically standing in for the writers -- deliberately putting a character in a situation designed to generate character development, as well as humiliating Gary just because she thought it would be funny.

One of the best episodes of the series. I didn't mind the deja vu plot, and I was with Ray when he referenced the TNG episode "Cause and Effect." It would've been funny if there was actually a scene where Sara yelled, "All hands, abandon ship! I repeat: all hands, abandon--" :D

So the temporal loop was not a dream or hallucination; it was a simulation, which also reminded me of the Orville episode "Firestorm." Gideon is as wise as she is beautiful. :) The events that transpired weren't real, but they were based on truth. For a moment there, I thought they were going to lose another cast member. I'm glad that wasn't case.

That was a great episode, very funny. BL and Legends are the DCW shows to watch this half of the season.

I tuned in a minute or so late and when I saw the outfits, I thought they had been in the future.

    I hope they publish Mick's book as a tie-in. :)

Also, a special edition that comes with a Beebo doll. :techman:

At first, the episode seemed like it was going to be a standard paint by numbers groundhog day episode but the ending with Gideon put a nice twist on everything and the ending made the whole thing work really well. And the ep had lots of funny moments too.

What gets me is Zari not knowing the term "Groundhog Day." That would require that her dystopian future America has not only suppressed her access to classic movies, but has eradicated the real-world custom/holiday of Groundhog Day. I mean, it's a stupid holiday, but it's such a long-established part of American pop culture that it's hard to believe it would be forgotten only 25 years in the future.

Well, they did ban religion. It's not hard to believe that such a ban would also encompass any movies involving mysticism or fantasy (something already being done to some degree in China), and it's a tad fantastical to have a holiday in which we ask a groundhog to predict the weather based upon whether or not it sees its shadow.

^Maybe, but in just 25 years? Tala Ashe is 33. Even if Zari is somewhat younger, she probably would've lived at least a few years of her childhood before the big crackdowns happened. She should have some memory of the pre-totalitarian US.

Sometimes I think writers forget how close the mid 21st century is getting... its not a futuristic far away setting anymore.

Will this be like those Scooby Doo episodes with famous stars?
    All in unison: “John Noble!!!”

Looks like Jonah Hex is returning:

And apparently it's in an Old West setting again, which is disappointing. I've been saying all along, the "anachronisms" format this season would've been a perfect opportunity to do the "Jonah Hex in a Mad Max future" storyline from the comics. But then, maybe the Legends find him in the future and then take him back to the Old West? Or they start out in his time and get swept into the future with him?

I know it's impossible, but an episode where Walter Bishop teams up with the Legends would have been awesome... :D

Well, Fringe was a Warner Bros. show. Hey, if they could absorb Constantine from NBC and Supergirl from CBS, who knows?

Awesome! It also answers my question about Mallus. I wonder if we'll get any comments about how much he sounds like Mallus, or at least sounds familiar.

This episode was pretty fun. Obviously the time loop story is pretty common at this point, but this was a fun one. The reveal that it was all a simulation was a nice twist, and it as great to see Amy Pemberton onscreen. I was a bit disappointed she was just in the simulation though, I was hoping maybe she'd be getting a more realistic looking hologram, rather than just the floating head that pops up from time to time.

Maybe Mallus will reveal that he chose to imitate John Noble because he had such a good villain voice.

Or maybe Mallus will turn out to be a fake and we'll meet "the man behind the curtain" who hired Noble to record the dialogue for what he thought was a video game or something.

Since I'd seen the publicity photos of Pemberton's onscreen appearance ahead of time, I initially thought that Zari's upgrade to Gideon would include giving her a realistic hologram.

I'd love it if they could have Gideon be an android on the ship. That way the actress could become a regular on the cast instead of just a voice. She is gorgeous and I would love to see her more on the show.

Ehh maybe, but I've seen it all before - i had the thought, but have seen it on Green Lantern with IA (Aya), and the android from Dark Matter. Physical extensions / interfaces for the ship.
