^^^ Yep - I think that's the case. Either production was so rushed on the effects the person responsible for checking 'script continuity' in relation to the effects: 1) Didn't really care. 2) Flagged it but was told there's no time for a redo/re composition/re-render. 3) Doesn't really exist. (IE the 1701 shot and some of the Discovery shots in particular were the only ones the Production staff realy checked to make sure they were what was asked for.)
Yet it seems that this is basically what happened. They were very quick to point out that a screen saying that Stamets was a chief engineer was a mistake and that the look of the Defiant wireframe was due Terran alterations. So if the D7 had been a mistake, I'm sure we would have heard of it by now.
That particular quote dates all the way back to 1994, to usenet (of course it does ) https://groups.google.com/d/msg/news.admin.misc/PQa10ERLuVs/Z1kVmGDuXlkJ
So much better than the B5 era rendering on Disvovery Go do the reboot Enterprise, chop chop And add a dome please
Well, it's also not the kind of mistake that's really something that can be owned-up-to easily. Stamets not being the engineer is a pretty important bit for the storyline, so they should clarify that, and it's almost certain the Defiant was always intended to be hot-rodded, so there was no harm in pointing that out. The D7/Bird of Prey/Prison Ship (come to think of it, it may have been a miscommunication within the writers' room, even before it made it out to production) not looking like a D7 seems to fall into the category of stuff like the K'Tinga showing up in "Enterprise," and I think we only got such a relatively quick explanation for that because there was bad blood behind the decision and a resulting eagerness to throw people under the bus. And since all the existing stuff in DSC is being redesigned anyway, they probably just elected to shrug and say, "Okay, that flappy Destiny-looking bastard is a D7, now" rather than try to walk it back. Or to at least keep the option open; we still haven't seen a name for that design from Eaglemoss or the official website, after all, so they may not have decided whether that ship being the D7 is going to be overwritten or not.
My favourite VFX mistake is "Have we cleared the Solar System yet?" "Yes sir" *They're still passing by Uranus* How do you screw absolutely basic stuff like that up?
The problem I have with seeing the word "hack" used, as has become popular lately, to describe the people making DSC is that the production as a whole appears so dysfunctional that it's impossible to tell how talented or not the individual creators working on the show actually are. Still, there seems to be some major, major miscommunication and/or lack of communication between departments on the show. Lord knows what kind of marching orders the rank and file artists on the show are receiving.
The planet is fairly dark blue. Looks more like Neptune, which would technically be the edge of the solar system as long as you ignore the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud.
I personally find the visual effects in STD to be quite disappointing. The ships look a lot less solid than even ships in TNG & DS9 despite them being older & not using entirely cgi.
As of yet, no fellow artist has modeled a new Gargarin CG model. When someone does I'd love to do a flyby. Again, no high quality 3D model of it has yet been produced, as it's only been a week. Surely someone out there will eventually model it.
Another few weeks of people posting screencaps of that front angle showing that stupid squished neck, and I'm liable to make a Disco-fied Enterprise myself once I'm irritated enough. And here I'd just been thinking of making a (slightly) TOS-ifieid Discovery.
I thought about using my Enterprise and alter it to the Discoprise. Unfortunately without good orthographic view, I would do a poor modeling job.
