I'm unclear... Does this Saban/Bandai breakup only affect the toys, not the show? Although I wonder how long the show could continue to exist without the toy sales to fund it. Would someone else get to take over the toy license in the US?

Rumor has it Hasbro could step in. They're major sellers are Star Wars. Marvel 6 inch legends and Transformers

Hasbro would have input into what merchandise would get featured. Whether it's ranger specific bikes or power up suits or New era Saban's desire to have cockpit armor mode

Hasbro got it. The article says that Bandai will continue to release stuff until April 1, 2019 when Hasbro will then take over.

I still think this thread needs to be renamed "Power Rangers and Super Sentai," since the latter gets at least as much coverage here as the former.

As for the former, today's Super Ninja Steel was slightly less lame than usual, but still kind of lame. "Making Waves" attempted to have some degree of interpersonal conflict, sort of, by having Hayley's dad and Sarah's mom (both single parents, though we have to infer that from context) hit it off and go out on a date which Hayley and Sarah conspire to ruin, requiring them to fix it as Power Rangers when it turns out the aquatic drone the two inventor parents were working on together is needed to save the day. It's still kind of dumb and sitcommy, but at least it's an attempt at character development. I'm not sure why Sarah and Hayley had a problem with their parents dating each other in the first place, though. I mean, they're such good friends already -- would it be so bad if they ended up as stepsisters? Or was it just the general squickiness of seeing their parents date anyone? The episode didn't make much effort to answer the question beyond repeatedly saying that it was "weird."

And oh, boy, the drone turns into the next new Zord, which is a surfer-themed one. I sort of anticipated something like that as soon as I saw the bright purple drone introduced. Really, it's getting kind of tiresome to see the Rangers teleport into the "new" Megazord cockpit, look around, and say "This new Brand Name Here Megazord is amazing!" when it looks exactly like the previous cockpit with a different-colored wall logo.

    Meanwhile...
Now, that's kinda cool. I like the music, and the action's pretty well-done. Not sold on the cast yet, but it's got promise. I'm surprised that the Ranger tech apparently comes from the Lupin Collection; I was expecting it was police tech that the thieves stole, but it seems it's the other way around.

While that's good news, it's hard to imagine it being as good as Go-Busters was.

"Morphin Grid?" It's always been the Morphing Grid before.

The article makes a good point -- if Saban is willing to go back and do previously unadapted seasons, that opens an interesting door. They could go back and adapt pre-Zyuranger seasons, if they were willing to settle for the reduced film quality, or if the footage could be remastered. Although it might create a continuity glitch if they do shows that provided some of the "New Powers" in Super Megaforce.

Perhaps it appealed more to Hasbro, since it has more of a Transformers aspect than Kyuranger

So does the toy company have input on the production of the show?
I'm surprised Hasbro would be announcing the next show at Toy Fair, I would think it would have been Saban or Nickelodeon at one of the big general cons like SDCC, or NYCC.

Maybe he's jumping the gun on a ToQger and Zyouhger.

I think it will go Go-busters- Kyuranger- Lupinranger Vs Patoranger

Ofcourse we just learned they're going back to a series from 2012. So who knows what any of the parties are planning

No doubt. These shows basically exist to sell toys. Many kids' shows over the past few decades, in both the US and Japan, have lived and died on the dictates of toy makers.

That's pretty encouraging. I wonder if less pressure to be gimmicky might have a positive effect on the storytelling too.

Go-Busters was great, had lots of American-friendly features, and they LITERALLY said “It’s Morphin’ Time!”. Story was fun as well. There’s no precedent for Sabah going backwards like this, but they’re adapting some good source material to be sure.

I must say, I really like the idea of adapting the Gobusters premise to revolve around the Morphin Grid. As instrumental as it is to Power Rangers lore, it rarely played a central role. Connecting it this way is almost kind of like fanfiction or extended universe stuff, and I quite like this idea.

Of course, then, that means expect at least one episode and the finale to focus on the Rangers losing their powers because of the grid.

I like the idea of the new series and it being at least a little connected to PR lore like the morphing grid. I also like them breaking the trend and actually going backwards. That said, if that show is at the same level of writing as Ninja Steel, its all going to be a waste. If its at least up to Dino Charge Season 1's level of writing, then it could be a fun season.

That is shocking news that the next new PR series is going to be the adaptation of Go-Busters that got skipped.

Most likely Bioman to Jetman would be the ones they would do if they plan doing some of the pre-zyuranger series.

I just finished a rewatch of Ninja Storm - including the Dino Thunder teamup Thunder Storm and the clip show Legacy of Power - and the season really does hold up even some 15 years later.

I've also now started a rewatch of Jungle Fury, and I realized something I hadn't before: there are a lot of structural similarities between that episode and the two-part premiere of Samurai, Origins, which is cool.

I really liked JF overall the first time I watched it, but actually never quite finished all of it because I let the disjointedness of the placement of Don't Blow That Dough throw me off, so my strategy this time is to skip that episode completely.

    Lupinranger VS Patoranger episode 2

Not alot of focus on the Patoranger this week. The three-in-one fusion technique was quite interesting.

We have the opening credits now. It's still taking me some time to get used. Two different songs at once doesn't sound right to my ears.

Super Ninja Steel's "Game Plan" was weirdly dated. A story about kids being addicted to an evil video game is so 1990s. And the game being a specific unit that had to be bought separately for every player seems old-fashioned -- wouldn't most kids just download the game onto their devices these days?

Also, when Levi wanted to get everyone to stop playing the game, couldn't he have put on an impromptu concert? He is a famous music star, after all.

The music here was a bit noteworthy in a way, in that it seemed to be drawing on MMPR more than usual. Victor and Monty's antics were scored with a variation of the Bulk & Skull theme, and the climactic action music was the MMPR main theme, even more fully than usual.

And now on to something more interesting -- neat that I get to watch these back-to-back.

Pretty bizarre, though. It's kind of a small-scale application of the Megazord principle.

I thought it was extremely clever. It's not two songs, it's one song in the style of a counterpoint duet, with two parallel lines of lyrics that contrast and occasionally converge. It's a fairly common duet technique; Stephen Sondheim used it a lot in his musicals. I thought it sounded very good. Overall, the music in this show is terrific.

The storytelling is good too. The Lupinrangers have a pretty intense backstory. Though I suspect that it will turn out their supposed benefactor is the one who captured their loved ones to trick them into working for him.

The action is also really impressively choreographed and shot, both in live action and CGI. There was a "bullet time" shot of the camera swooping around the Lupinrangers as they jumped off the skywalk bridge in slow motion, and I can't figure out how they did that. Some of the other shots in that sequence seemed to be shot with drones, but that one would've required the drone to move impossibly fast, I'd think. The giant robo battle was strikingly animated too, and the nighttime setting made it distinctive.

However, the equipment/toy designs are just ridiculous, really cumbersome and clunky, and that "Good Striker" puppet thing is insane.

I'm curious about LupinYellow's observation that the same morphing tech changed the two teams differently. Maybe it responds to the user's thoughts/desires?
