I think the terms "extreme feminine beauty," makes it pretty clear isn't not referring to someone who is just "hot." In any case non-seven year cycle sexual encounters should be considered rare, rather than hooking up with any hottie they happen to meet.

Do Salmon go into spawning mode every time a hot fish swims by? Do the giant eelbirds of Regulus Five suddenly go back to their caverns for a quickie when a sexy female flies by?

There are biological reasons why humans are willing and able to have sex pretty much any time. I just seems uninventive to give Vulcanians the same human libido just because we can't imagine going without sex for seven years.

While "extreme feminine beauty" is incredibly subjective, one imagines a super-hot Vulcan woman walking down the street, sending everyone's cycles into disarray.

Or what might happen if Vulcan was carpet bombed with inflammatory pornographic imagery of aesthetically appealing females.

It could be that Vulcans can have sex at any time they like but they are only fertile once every seven years, which is what instigates pon farr.

That sounds like the most logical explanation.

Not quite on-topic but not far off-topic: In my world, the Vulcan tradition of arrainged marriage is beginning to fade. It's still common among the upper class / ruling elite, but the general population has given up the practice. Instead, young Vulcan men have adopted a once-popular, almost-forgotten Human tradition of asking the young lady's father for permission to court her. (Vulcans wouldn't date someone unless they believe it would lead to marriage.)

I like that notion, fits in with their very Victorian manner about love, sex and relationships.

Why does one assume the Vulcan sex drive the same as for humans? Also Vulcan biocontrol could decrease the urge for sex for years.

I always just assumed that vulcans had a biological urge to reproduce every seven years. For a species with such long lives it makes sense for them, seven years isn't anything to a Vulcan. I doubt that Amanda would have stayed with sarek if he would only get freaky every seven years. Also being against sex before marriage, like some kind fundamentalist Christians, is illogical and I doubt vulcans would care.

I would presume a Vulcan's very first Pon Farr happens at the same time they reach puberty, so the idea of having sex before their first Pon Farr is unthinkable.

Tuvok was 29 when he was first in Starfleet and only took a mate after he left.

I don't think that all vulcans wouldn't want kids. I mean look at Sarek he had 2 kids and adopted a 3rd, although apparently he forgot about his first son and the adopted one.

I see no reason to assume that Vulcans' attitude towards having children would be any different from other races. Some Vulcans want kids, some don't.

Of course it's logical to want the species to continue, but it's not the obligation of any specific couple to do so. Meaning: For every Vulcan marriage that doesn't produce children, there's a lot of others which will.

Man and I thought Sisko taking his son to a dangerous space station, that is almost constantly under attack, and letting him go to an active war zone was bad parenting.

What else would you have Sisko do? Ship Jake off to Earth to live with his grandfather?

Everybody gives Worf hell for doing basically the same thing (with Alexander), but somehow with Sisko it's okay?

Heck, Dr. Crusher took Wesley into space with her and the Enterprise was nearly destroyed how many times?

Then again, Great-Grandma was busy having sex with a ghost, so maybe Wesley was better off on the ship . . . :)

On any given day the life of everyone on the enterprise is in danger, they should never allow kids to live on Star ships.

Starships are protected by their crews, armaments, shields, and multiple layers of security. It's not exactly a free-for-all, you know. And Earth is not exactly 100% safe either (no world or starship ever is), as it has been the target of alien attack many times as well.

In the end... whenever possible, children should be with their parents. Worf, despite his initial skittishness, honestly tried to do his best in caring for Alexander, and it seems obvious that Ben Sisko was the best father (to Jake) that he could possibly be.

The point is that you can't simply ship a kid off to his/her grandparents whenever things get rough. Sometimes you've just got to stick it out and be the best parent that you can be - wherever you happen to be living or serving.
