This is pretty much what I think. I don't know why people get annoyed about politics being brought up, discussion is incredibly important.
Roseanne was always political, in 1988 just the premise itself was political, at least in the US. It just doesn't seem that way anymore because we have had different working class families depicted in pop culture, and now that the show has past to memory the immediacy of it's political edge had dulled.
Will and Grace is the same, although I must admit I have not watched that much of it. The show had multiple principle characters who were homosexual and it premiered only a year after Ellen was controversially cancelled, that's a pretty strong statement. Obviously now that homosexuality is way more tolerated it won't seem that way.
Everyone said the same thing about the Beavis and Butthead revival a few years back, as if the original had no politics in it at all.

I think everyone likes politics or social commentary. I do think they like it when it feels well thought out and not to preachy and also it can vary from show to show. Some shows people just want escapism and others you want to be thought provoking. I think "Roseanne" was one of those shows that people do like it when it's more than just comedy. It was almost "MASH" like in how it could do comedy but then get serious. At least in the early seasons. I think the moment they all went to Disney World after Disney had bought ABC is when it was clear the show wasn't very good anymore. That and how Roseanne had plastic surgery and started dressing in more fancy clothes and then the lottery was like the death nail to the show. I still shudder at the Rambo episode and I have never even seen that episode.

Nobody minded the politics in King of the Hill. Hell, the bad guys in that show were liberal stereotypes. It didn't feel political even when it was because the stories focused on the individual character's immediate dilemma.

But there are of course big differences between conservatism that criticizes government programs that hurt business and restrict economic freedom, and conservatism that calls entire groups evil. There is a fine line between opposing political correctness as something that over-expands the definition of what we deem racist and opposing political correctness in actual defense of racism.

I guess it'd be harder to do what King of the Hill did in today's environment, because if it came out now it'd be adopted by loud hateful social media conservatives as a flag carrier.

That's true but then TV also doesn't have to always focus just on good people and even if you do a show around a really bad person like Tony Soprano you still have to write him in away that people will care about him or understand him, no matter what his views are.

People I do think watching bad behavior on tv. Sometimes because it's fills a emotional outlet in seeing people do or say things they would never do themselves or also because a character like Tony Soprano is very unpredictable. You never know what he might do, on the other hand the nice liberal character is limited in his or her choices because you know they will feel the need to always be written as the nice moral person.

Sopranos makes bad people the protagonist but the narrative doesn't morally defend them. It takes place in a genre where the audience submerges their real world morals. I wouldn't compare that to if they did a show where immigrants showed up and started raping people, or where gay people started having sex with animals, or something like that in a context that's clearly meant as a real world analogy.

Roseanne revival will kick off with a special one-hour premiere on Tuesday, March 27 at 8/7c.

That makes sense as The Middle is this generation's Roseanne. The Middle gets moved to 8:30 and Fresh Off the Boat gets screwed.

I want to know if Leon will be back. The sparring between him and Roseanne was on point.

If they can bring all these other shows back, they can bring back Enterprise. :-(

Leon was always fun, and was one of my favorite characters. I do hope he comes back.

Oh most definitely. Roseanne could tax the patience of even the most longsuffering person. :D

The first review I have seen is in. It's good and bad. Like most of us feared Roseanne's support of Trump is an issue in the show. I agree with the review, it's difficult for me to see Roseanne, who was pro-gay, anti-corrupt politics, pro-women, pro-trans to STILL support a horrible human being.

But the review goes on about continually like Roseanne was big on that or something.

Speaking as a Trump supporter, I'm happy to see someone who is willing to show both sides on her show.

While I'm amazed anyone is a Trump or Clinton supporter, that's not my problem at all. My problem is Roseanne always spoke out against bullshit, no matter what side it was on. So in the first episode back she is a die hard Trump supporter. Yet in the second episode she defends the gender fluid grandson from bullies. Who is the biggest anti trans, anti gay bully? Trump! You can be a Trump supporter and still call out stupid shit more so because it's not like Clinton was any better on the trans/gay rights issue.

Short version - You can be a Trump / Clinton supporter without being a cult member. Sounds like Roseanne is in the cult.

Well, if you factor in how much power he has as the president, one could argue that makes him the biggest. Even though I am 100% sure that Pence is a bigger anti-gay/trans bully.

I've met plenty of anti-gay and anti-trans people who are much bigger anti-gay and anti-trans bullies than Trump and Pence, but they don't have any sort of government power.

I think we don't fully understand all of the Trump supporters. I bet some, like Roseanne, see's him as just another politician. He might be a asshole but just like all the assholes that came before him. Not as some special kind of once in a lifetime asshole that we have never seen in the White House. They might like some of the stuff he says if they are conservative but they aren't like some of the alt right who are basically cult members. The rest of the nasty stuff he says is typical politician bullshit that they always say and it means nothing since they like most people they feel like our leaders are always lying to us everytime they open their mouths.
