What would a dark and gritty "Orville" looked like?

That's possible though I wonder if McFarlande has it in him. Giving up on comedy is a hard thing to do. I also thought of something else They could do a musical episode. I could totally see them using a mirror universe to do their own "Once More With Feeling" because we know McFarlande likes musical numbers. Heck they even kind of set it up with Bortus and the singing, bit.

In the Mirror Orvilleverse, there would be an Uncle Albert in place of Admiral Halsey. ;)

They wouldn't even need to do it as an alternate universe, all they would need to do is either visit a planet where people only communicate through song, or maybe it's a effect from some kind of anomaly or something.

I've had the priviledge of seeing a Trek episode done as a musical once. A local school's theatre group had put on a musical version of Frame of Mind, I kid you not. They went all out by dressing the hallways to look like the ship's corridors, and having officers escort you down the 'turbolift' to the amphitheatre, which itself was dressed up to look like the Bridge.

I'll admit, when they do the inevitable alternate universe episode, having it be grim-dark where instead of being evil with goatees the crew are depressing, hate each other and have omnipresent stubble covering their faces. Basically, they go nu-BSG for a week.

How many threads about Orville do we need on here btw? I still don't get why there needs to be one for every episode, rather than an ongoing thread like every other show in this forum. Never mind all the other ones like this, "Orville is renewed", "Orville keeps getting better and better." Yeah, cool story bro.

I imagine that's because people are really interested in it. Go figure.

    Plausible.
This is okay, but I think the role of Mercer would need to be re-cast in order to handle the drama. Also, because of circumstances, he's not sure of his feelings for Grayson.
The blackmailing is too MU-ish. So, no blackmail. In addition to her cheating with Mallory, have her lose Mercer's child in a drowning accident of something, which naturally, puts a strain on the marriage, which then leads to the affair with Mallory. Also, she's still very much in love with Mercer.
Too over the top. Have Mallory lose the leg in a duty accident and have it replaced with a robotic appendage. Also, he is still in love with Grayson but also respects Mercer, at least professionally.
Abandon her children for money? No. Have her story be that earlier in her career she participates in a Union attempt to save a dying race which accidently speeds up their deaths. Though not her fault, Finn holds herself responsible for genocide and is wracked with guilt and shame. She is on Orville, which is not a demotion, but is not nearly the level she should be on. She still loves and cherishes her kids who are the only thing holding her together. More like Doc Cottle than Beverly Crusher.
Again, too MU-ish. Have Bortus on Orville with his husband illegally (per Bortus' people's law) raising their little girl. Make Bortus' people more sinister and high profile. They suspect Bortus and hubby of some shenanigans with their child but need to prove it. His people believe that women are so inferior that they should all be erased from existence, but they know this is impossible. So they hide their prejudice.
No, Alara's strength is natural, but she is more troubled by her parents treatment and acts out in different ways. My understanding is that she is only stronger while on planets with less gravity.
    This, I like.
I like this, except I might make Isaac and his people exist only digitally. But if they do have bodies, make them look more ironic, like the Cybermen on Doctor Who and less like Robbie the Robot on Lost in Space.
I think it's hard to do a good drama with this character. I would eliminate him.

TNG may have been optimistic, but it was also stodgy and pretentious. Orville is unlike TNG in many aspects.

I agree. If only there was a forum dedicated to just "Orville" to talk about it.;)

Macfarlane got to do a mirror universe episode, or turn in his Trek nerd card.

That would be funny. I think they all will have goatees, including Isaac.

I always wondered why Sliders didn't do that.

For that matter, how long before Orville draws from the mirror universe well? Feels kinda inevitable.
