Yes, we all learned that sarcasm is still alive and well on forums.

At the risk of repeating myself - how about contributing to the thread then?

Unfortunately, the post "I'm not a fan of Disney Star Wars" gives little to add to the forum. I mean, does that mean the person isn't going to watch Episode 8? Are they done with Star Wars altogether? Boycotting?

I can make a lot of assumptions based on that one statement alone, but then it becomes reckless speculation, not discussion.

Not as good as TFA. I'm terrible with numbers.

I'll be surprised if it makes TFA numbers too. There's a good buzz for the film, plus the 'carries last film' but I can't see it doing more than 220 million opening weekend. Which is still a massive amount.

Given other recent box office disappointments, Rogue One's dropoff and the fact that I don't think the repeat demand will be near as high as TFA, I'll set my expectations on the lower side.

Assuming press is similarly positive to TFA:
Domestic opening of 185m, overall domestic of 715m, total international gross 1.45b.

If the movie is actually really good and the reviews are dazzlingly positive:
Domestic opening of 205m, overall Domestic of 790m, total international gross 1.7b.

Some people are only in this for Luke, Han, and Leia, so the numbers will be higher than Rogue One, but with Han gone, less than TFA, though because Luke is in the story and of course the loss of Carrie Fisher, that might do something as well.

I'd like to think that the saga films are a bigger draw than the side stories, so I think R1s performance was about on the money. I think your first set of numbers should be considered at the lower-ish end of expectations, after all we've seen jurassic world and the avengers both crack 200 million opening weekends, the avengers a good few years ago too. Star wars is a much bigger franchise than the jurassic films and easily on a par with the MCU in my opinion, so I'm guessing your second set numbers is more where I think it's going to go. We shall see, I'm certainly getting excited about watching it, I've got high hopes for this one. :techman:

No you're right, I had little time to flesh out my post. I was kinda on the road. I think that as far as TFA goes, I can live without seeing it again. Too derivative, and many try to justify that aspect as some kind of love letter to us OT fans. However it did the opposite as many of us were like, once the nostalgia wore off, hey! We already saw that story in episode 4! I was also disappointed in Rogue 1. Lackluster story and character development. I think if TLJ fairs better, I may watch it. I don't promote boycotts, but if it's not fun to be a fan anymore, then it's time to walk away. There's nothing wrong with that. It doesn't mean you're not a true fan as some militant groups or trolls will have you believe. But back to TLJ, the caveat I have as for doing well is to compare sales to that of Empire, adjusted for inflation. If it's a success, it'll meet or succeed TESB. If It is a moderate success, then it'll be just less then that metric. At least that's how I see the bar on it's worth as a movie. As for why I'm not a fan of New Disney Star Wars, it's all down to the undoing of ROTJ. It should have ended there. As much as it's nice seeing those characters again, I could just easily have watched the original trilogy on bluray. I would have preferred a new original trilogy, not a rehash of formulaic drivel. Its why I am burnt out on the Marvel Cinematic universe. Disney has beat that formula and horse to death. I'm already seeing Star wars fatigue happening all over the web, and in retail stores. I can't even walk by the toy aisle without running into a huge Star wars Disney display, and TFA merchandise still on shelves. Clearance prices and all, and still sitting there gathering dust. I wonder how much TFA and TLJ merchandise will be shelf warming when Han Solo comes out? Its the story and undoing of the past stories that really is the problems I have with the new movies. The formula, the rehashing. As much as people bitched about the prequels, at least it offered unique designs and ships, or new places like Naboo. And don't get me started on Daisy and her stilted acting in TFA. Even she concedes it sucked. Still, depending on how TLJ is, it will determine if I should keep going with this new story with a half crazed Luke, dead Han Solo, and ridiculous toy story Porgs, or just ignore episode 9, and wait to see if Johnson can pull off a win with a new trilogy. As for seeing the Han Solo movie, I'll pass. Too painful to watch knowing his snotty brat of a kid offs him in the future. There's a lot to kinda like, and a lot that is infuriating in Disney Star Wars.

While I disagree with most of this, especially regarding TFA and Daisy Ridley, I appreciate you taking the time to explain your position :techman:

Honesty, I agree with most of what you've said here. I enjoyed TFA on first viewing, but for me the whole thing has just unravelled on subsequent viewings to the point of almost disliking the movie. It has it's moments but it's eye-rolling in parts when it comes to originality, like you said you can diss the prequels all you like but at least they were ambitious and showed a lot of new worlds, cities, ships, aliens, TFA did none of those things hardly and that's disappointing as a fan of a franchise that's been seen as a leader in visual storytelling for decades.

Rogue One I loved. A few pacing issues and the odd dull character aside I thought it was a spectacular return to form. I also found the visual effects to be far superior in almost every aspect over TFA, which I thought were a bit 'cartoony' at times.

Regarding the over saturation of merchandise, the way I see it is 'hey that's Disney for you' at least they know how to sell their products. If trek got even a quarter as much exposure as this I'd be a much happier fan, and would probably be looking forward to a follow up to Beyond instead of the void we're faced with now.

Honestly, I think TLJ is arguably a more important film in the franchise than TFA was, this film for me is where this trilogy will succeed or fail after the too-safe approach of it's predecessor. If we have some kind of re-run of ESB then I think that will do serious damage to the credibility of this new trilogy, and I doubt the critics will be as kind this time round either. It will still take a ton of money though. I can't see it doing less than 1.2b worldwide.

This illustrates my overall point regarding TLJ. TFA has become safe to critique, safe to dissect, in fact, safe to say "Give me the Prequels!" because of fan disappointment. TLJ doesn't have the hedge of protection of being the newest Star Wars film anymore. It will be exposed, picked apart and destroyed far quicker than TFA was, and that has the great potential to damage the film's box office.

You're probably right. Usually the first movies are the best in a franchise, but because Disney got off on the wrong foot with TFA, the view of TLJ is gonna be much harder to find those willing to give it a pass on stuff that is infuriating. Its hard, very hard for a sequel to pull a franchise along, if the initial movie is held in retrospect as a failure (or rehash with better effects) even after it's box office take. I'm just not a fan of this story. I liked the "and they lived happily ever after" of ROTJ. I could have watched an Old republic trilogy instead, but with it is as is now..I'm just not that excited to see TLJ. I may wait till it hits 2nd run theatres at matinee and watch it. But I'm not chomping at the bit to camp outside and get a ticket. I'm already getting an ewok, Jar Jar vibe from the Porgs.. Disney's latest cash cow attempt in merchandising.
