It's an AMD Quad-Core Processor A6-3420M, AMD Radeon HD 6520G with 512MB Graphics System Memory, has 4GB DDR3 Memory installed. Don't ask me to try to update the sound or the graphics either... it's legacy now and as such AMD won't let me unless I get a new card set. I tried to update a handful of times and it gave me that bs error. It could be a part of the problem in part as well. Yes it was updated from 7. Just fine (for the most part).
Hmm.. your drivers are only available from M$, it is part of Windows update so it seems, those would be the latest versions, as for soundcards, depends on it, you need to look at the site of the manufacturer that made your laptop for the ones that are suitable for your machine, generic drivers might work, not sure though. As for the rest, if your machine came with Win7 then it was build for that specific OS, the machine and Win10 might just not entirely get along 100%

This is why I refuse to use that crap.. every "version" is actually almost a total new OS, not like the usual point releases of Linux but really a totally new OS, now M$ likes to shove it onto your machine and then somehow make all your installed programs work and behave like nothing happened and they think that's going to fly.. it's like shoving a new airplane between two existing wings.. besides that, M$ needs two years at least to make an OS reliable enough to use it which it never gets so Win 10 is in a perpetual state of alpha/beta version, add all the spying and guess why I am NOT going to let it near my machines. Switching to Linux needed some time and some getting used to and it isn't perfect but it DOES work and gives peace of mind, Mint 18.x will be supported until 2021, doesn't matter if you stick to 18.0 or 18.1/2/3 you'll be set until 2021 and they at least tell you that if you do upgrade to the next version you will have to reinstall from scratch again which is the best way to install a new OS, hassle? Maybe, better? DEFINATELY! eh.. end rant..
Yep. And this morning ran into another one (one I'm familiar with)... not being able to access the sound bar in order to fix 'the audio service is not start' glitch (it was actually on). So I had to reboot to fix both issues. Can't blame ya there. If/when I do get a new PC, I'll probably go with Linux.
There's no problem with M$... if you use a few versions behind the latest, so that they've had a chance to bed it all down properly, patch it, etc. When I ran 95/XP and was a few behind, they worked like a charm. As does WIn 7 now... kinda... I posted a problem some days ago that no one replied to, about OS and browser crashes. Doing some research, I found out something crucial. Updated to latest Java, updated to latest Firefox (64-bit) on my 64-bit system. Problems. Did some reading. Turns out the FFox (64-bit) will not work with Java, you have to use the latest FFox 32-bit version. Just did a reinstall, and so far... smooth as. I'll giver it a couple hours, but lookin' good so far. So, TIL.
Hmm, Java, is it still the trainwreck it was like a few years ago? back then it was only holes, bugs and security flaws.. As for M$, yes, there used to be older version, in 2020 7 will be gone 2023 8.1 will be gone, then there only will be 10 which will never mature..
that like flash pretty much applies to any platform it runs on. There was talk to that Oracle was going to hand off Java to the OSS community but no if that's actually going to happen.
google has its faults but compared to the unholy abomination that is Oracle its a fucking saint. Like HP Oracle keeps all it's drivers and fiirmware for their servers and related hardware locked away unless you pony up for their support contracts.

I've had quick play around with Open Indiana but didn't spent too much time on it (spun it up under a virtual box VM). Looks like they've had new release since I played with it late last year. illumos doesn't seem to have any recent builds - seems to have forked off a number of projects but nothing seems that active.
I'm loving the hell out of Linux Mint 18.2. Also, I use the Aptik package manager, so when I do end up installing 18.x/19.x, whatever, it will be a smooth as glass transfer.
Point releases are coming in through the update manager without a hitch, so 18.3 will be installing without any problems, as for 19.xx, while you have tools to upgrade I personally first install a new version on a test machine and if it not implodes I'll install it on the main machine etc, it takes maybe 2 hours for me to set everything up and copy all my files. So far 18.xx has been great, one recalcitrant machine has been a bit troublesome but all in all it has been again better than 17.xx which was better than 15.xx etc etc, it keeps improving. Thanks for the tip on Aptik, I'll look into it in any case.
I had switched over from Windows 10, having become much too tired to deal with Microsoft's invasiveness and desire to monetize every action I take on my own PC. Granted, I have to miss out on a few great games (WINE won't work at all with them), but it's a small price to pay for privacy, stability, and peace of mind. If there's one overarching reason to stay on Mint, though, it is that insane file transfer speed. On Windows 10, the best I could do was 35 MB/s, with boosts to 50 MB/s every so often. On Mint, my initial transfer speed was 140 - 190 MB/s. I transferred 300GB of backup data in about 25 minutes, compared to the 5 hours it would take on Windows.
I have the advantage that I already had a game capable Win 8.1 PC, and that is what it does, I build the AM1 APU machine for all desktop stuff, and the 8.1 machine only handles gaming, so even if I have to use win10 (barf) after 2023 the only information they're gonna get is: run forwards, run backwards, look up, down, left, right, FIRE FIRE FIRE, zoom in, zoom out, AARGH! *respawn* ATTACK!! Mint is indeed quite fast with USB 3 although I see some differences between the various machines, for some reason the recalcitrant one is usually the fastest machine when it comes to backing up..
