I really can't choose either of these options.

I'd really prefer it to stay (roughly) in the continuity, but that doesn't seem to be what's happening. If that D7 was not just some bizarre mistake, then we're solidly in the reboot land.

But lying to your viewers is never a good idea. If you're gonna reboot it say so. I'm not exactly gonna like it, but I like it even less if you do it anyway and then lie about it.

    ---

As for reboots in general, they're often creatively kinda weak. Sometimes they can truly bring something fresh to the table, but often it is just excuse to rehash the greatest hits moments over and over instead of coming up with something new. How many times have the Spiderman films been rebooted already? I've lost count. I really have zero interested in seeing the fifth version of how Peter Parker gets bitten by a radioactive spider.

Reboot or not, that seems to be exactly what Discovery is doing.

That I don't agree with. I think it is pretty original. I don't think it is very good, but they're doing things differently.

Sarek, Mudd, the Klingons, Mirror Universe, Tribbles, Gorn skeleton, Horta. Constant name drops to things that existed in other versions of Star Trek.

I'm not seeing a whole lot of originality.

Small universe syndrome, it certainly suffers from. Probably the worst of all the series for that, actually. But in terms of tone, storyline, characters, and so forth, I think it's pretty original as a Trek product. No other Trek series has done anything similar out the gate, and there aren't many parallels in any season.

Most of this is cargo cult continuity, as you say, name dropping things. This is mostly unnecessary and rather annoying. That however is not the content or the theme of the plots, which are quite unlike most of the Star Trek (and not always in the good way.)

The storytelling has turned into such an overwrought mess, it's hard for me to care anymore. "Prime Purée" works as well as anything.

If they did then the editors on Memory-Alpha are going to have a collective hernia.

They’re taking it by the production staff’s word and putting everything from DSC as Prime.

No images of the DSC D-7 on the page last a checked, but it credited as appearing.

No shits given by me. I'm already treating it as if it was part of the MU/Section 31 or something else tbh, because there are too many holes to justify it being Prime Universe.

There should be a third option: "it would make sense, and solve more problems than it causes".

I'm not one of the fans who feels like I base my entire enjoyment of a franchise on whether or not the universe holds up and seems "real" as though I could live there.

No shits given either way. It's a TV show.

If they had said nothing or that it wasn't prime timeline then most of the issues people have with the show would never have appeared in the first place.

Most of the problem arise because they stated it was prime timeline, doing that meant they needed to keep everything recognisable yet with a visual detail update.

Which is mostly what they did with Starfleets ships even the old ones like the Shenzou and they look great, the Discovery is also fine as its a new class specifically built on the quiet for the experiment and that explains why we haven't seen it before and never will again.

Then of course we come to the Klingon ships which seemed to have been cobbled together at the end just before release and as a result they all look rubbish. :ack:

They could maybe have been forgiven if the new design ships had looked really cool and raptor like as the ships did before showing that some real care and thought had gone into them, alas no so far we have the Destiny 7, Death Gliders and Peacocks.

Unfortunately we are now in a situation where some of what we see screams prime timeline yet other parts scream reboot.

Its the worst of all possible worlds.

Well, I do give a shit. It was sold as not just Prime, but tying in to the original narrative, and that's how I've been viewing it. My Netflix subscription is riding on it.

Would the cursed child or strange beasts had the same pull if they were independent of the seven Potter books? Course not. It matters.

    I honestly don't care.

The writing is very good, the acting is very good, it looks very good.

It's a solid and good show either way and that's all that matters.

And for the visual nonsense. If the desilu production crew had access to the resources and insight that these guys have, I doubt you'd see any difference at all. Aside from the primary colours to help sell more TV sets.

I have liked the story so far and Lorcas portrayal, the whole hologram Sarek leaning against a table that isn't physically in the room with him made me laugh out loud though.
