It was kind of a neat concept where you had a one hour videotape playing at the same time you and others played on a game board representing the Galaxy class U.S.S. Enterprise. The idea was that a Klingon (played by Robert O'Reilly not as Gowron) seized the Enterprise to start a war between the Klingons and the Federation. The Klingon would pop up at various times to say things like "Whomever is moving experience biage" (punishment). Though the points the Klingon appeared on the tv screen was of course fixed (due to the VHS tape playing) if you had different players playing in a different turn order it could be a different game each time. There was a second VCR board game built around the idea of Q and the Borg which was advertised in Star Trek: The Fan Club Magazine (a picture of the game box was included) but I think it was shelved and the idea evolved into the video game "Star Trek: Borg". Anyone remember this stuff? Seemed like a nice concept which was never given a fair shot.
It was ok the first few games, but once you saw the entire small video, 40 mins of actual video, 20 mins of star field, then it became dull as dishwater because you knew what was coming...oh look he will insult whoever is moving now...........or, the less said about "experience bIj!", the better. lol
Sounds identical to the video board game "Atmosfear". Narrated by an ominous figure known as the "Gatekeeper" who'd pop up throughout the video to give commands, punishment and what not. As I recall the object of the game was to collect all the multi-colored keys and reach a certain point of the board within a time limit. The Gatekeeper gradually grows more skeletal and creepy the longer you play, eventually turning into the Grim Reaper or something when you lose. Great game! It even had a sequel on DVD I believe.
I wasn't bothered by the games getting repetitive because lets' be honest, unless you're playing an RPG with a gamemaster who continually changes things, almost every game you play whether it be checkers, chess, or a VCR board game is going to become repetitive at one point or the other.
My children really enjoyed playing that game. It was actually pretty hard to gather all the equipment you needed, make it to the Bridge, and break through the force field in the allotted time. Fond memories, mostly for the time playing with the kids. It's still on the shelf; may be time to get it back out...
I still have that game somewhere, and no VCR to play it on. Did anyone else have that other TNG board game? I had it as a kid, all I remember are there were hundreds of blue and green glass beads that you placed on the game board for some reason or other.
I don't remember it. I had a TNG board game of some kind of it didn't have hundreds of glass beads. Unless they all fell out of course.

I had the Game of the Galaxies, although my box was a blue one, not red. I thought it was a rather rare game as I never heard much discussion about it. It was a rather decent game, though I never got much chance to play it as my family is not much of a 'board game' player.
There are like 50 of them available for sale on ebay for very reasonable prices. Though shipping is a bitch.
