I mean like the Abrams movie in the sense I said above (being a great action-adventure series set up in the Star Trek universe). I like both Discovery, thus far, and the first Abrams movie (didn't come by the new ones yet). I'm quite happy of having both the Orville (which is basically a new Trek series) and Discovery on the air the moment. I think it's a great time to be Star Trek fans.

But again, you have to view the series in the context of the time period in which they were made. This is why it's silly to give TNG credit for not doing a shallow action adventure, because shallow action adventure sci-fi was just as dead on the small screen in 1987 as thoughtful, adult sci-fi.

Huh??? Have you seen the show?? The moral dilemma regarding Ripper (a dominant factor in eps 3-5) was Trek at its very finest........ it is DEFINATELY trying to be more than action-adventure.........

McDuff, can you elaborate further? You're being very vague. All of Trek is sci-fi action/adventure with morality tales in their respective eras. DIS is just the latest of the bunch.

By adding "shallow", you're turning the discussion about something else. There can be great "non shallow" drama in Hollywood space action adventure series. In fact, even comedy. For example, great drama between two characters having nothing to do with the sci-fi exploration of humanity), like a girl having to live with her alcoholic rapist father. Or very deeply touching comedy (think Groundhog Day), even if it's the emotion we feel more than the content that is touching. TNG was something else, than "not being shallow". I described some aspects of it above. I'm not saying all TV shows should be like Star Trek but I respect and love Star Trek to be something great and almost unique in the world of television (series like Doctor Who, Stargate, Sliders, The Orville are similar to some degrees).

So, I take it that we all agree that Trek is not shallow in general? Kind of like water being wet?

Sorry, but that's just plain wrong. DIS is so much more than an action adventure series and at this point you're just making yourself look foolish. You either haven't been watching or just grasping at straws to justify your original point.

Even though it's obviously very early, I would still rank DSC far above the generic VOY and ENT so far. The characters seem far more complex and the show just has an unpredictable energy to it that those safe and formulaic shows didn't.

It still has a ways to go to reach the level of DS9 though, with all of its rich and interesting characters and amazing world-building over seven seasons. Not to mention just how much fun those relationships were to watch.

After only five episodes, I don't think it's fair to put DSC in a ranking against other series. The other series have the edge based solely on time and cultural/personal acclimation. DSC needs more time and, y'know, more content.

Episodes though, I'd rank them like this:

    1. Choose Your Pain
    2. Vulcan Hello / Battle at the Binary Stars (I see these as one episode)
    3. Butcher's Knife
    4. Context is for Kings
Every episode has been very strong, imho. DSC is off to a great start.

Same. What they've done so far is superior to anything either show preceding it did. Where it will eventually sit in competition with the others remains to be seen.

    As far as episodes go,
    1. Choose Your Pain
    2. Butcher's
    3. Context is for Kings
    4. The Vulcan Hello
    5. Battle at the Binary Stars

The bottom two have flipped in my estimation, and while I originally rated them the other way around, following further watches I would choose the order above. BatBS was a bit overly pew pew when taken as a freestanding episode, and contained the mind meld across light years nonsense.

As much as I prefer the version of the show we have now, I still thought those first two episodes were intense and gripping as hell, and am surprised so many don't seem to care for them.

This is difficult to do, given that the DSC story is really only beginning thus far...but based entirely on what I've seen and felt so far...my series rankings would be (spacing between each indicates variability of how they compare to each other:)

    1. TOS (fell in love from day one...still the original and the best...as Kirk said to Garth, "you were the MODEL for the rest of us" No matter how old or "dated" this becomes, it truly is a timeless masterpiece that changed the world.)

    2. DSC (also fell in love with from day one...but, as they say in my business..."there's still a LOT of football left to be played here, boys." And even though I love it thus far, I do wish they had built the first season around a different arc than "Again with the Klingons.")

    3. DS9 (loved the pilot, but fell off the map completely by about episode 4 or 5. Didn't get re-engaged until WOTW and then only sporadic. Serialized nature kept me away. Needed to re-watch about 6 years ago...and loved it at that point. )

    4. TNG (liked EaF enough...but quickly got bored with this "kinder, gentler" Trek. Characters were too bland and stilted...Picard to "action-averse." Still...tuned in every single week and grew to love the show. That said, today...I find it very difficult to get through a re-watch. VERY difficult)
    5. ENT (was "meh" about the first season and never really came back. Just did a full re-watch months ago for the first time ever and found it to be, now with the passage of time, a pretty good and entertaining little show in it's own right. Honestly, TNG beats it out on nostalgia only at this point)

    6. VOY (liked the pilot, lost interest about 3 episodes in when it was clear that the tone and direction were far too much of what we'd seen already, and only sporadically went back after that. To this day, I've not seen more than 1/2 the episodes. Tried a re-watch 3 years ago...couldn't slog through it. Just not my cup of tea)

As huge a disappointment as VOY was, I think I'd still rank it over ENT just because of the much better premise it started out with. And there were still some pretty strong and imaginative episodes in those first 4 seasons I watched.

ENT though just felt uninspired from the start, with a bland captain and derivative stories. Even in that slightly better fourth season that people like.

DSC is competing against Voyager for last place so far, but can still advance (so far I have had more fun with Orville). I think Enterprise is underrated, but it’s still difficult to rate it above the original three. TNG was the show I grew up with, DS9 (and B5) came at the perfect time, and offered longer more serious arcs. TOS was weak at times, especially viewed from 2017, still it was the original with a fantastic trio headlining, and some incredibly strong episodes and great movies.

    1. TOS
    2. DS9
    3. TNG
    4. ENT

    5. DSC

To me the show is getting better week by week.

As for show rankings, I can only judge by the first 5 eps.

    DSC
    DS9
    VOY
    TOS
    ENT
    TNG

    Here are my show rankings:
    1. DS9
    2. TNG
    3. DSC
    4. VOY
    5. ENT
    6. TOS
DSC started in 5th place, by the way.
