Not like that. It does not look like a fake set on a 1960's TV show.

This comes across as more strawmanning. Who are these fans who hold their noses? I have seen literally no one arguing that STD should look like "a 1960s TV series," with all the constraints that involved (quick-and-dirty wooden construction, transparent overlays on bridge monitors, styrofoam rocks, etc.). For that matter, I haven't even seen anyone arguing that it should look like a 1980s TV series (TNG to me always looked like a hotel lobby in space, a look that The Orville has done a good job of replicating).

What many of us are arguing are that the design aesthetics of the original series are worth emulating, but updating with contemporary production capabilities.

I think the internals of Discovery in the latest episode have moved somewhat closer to that, I'm happy to say — from the wider passageways to the crew quarters and especially the engine room — although the bridge is still far too large (and I don't understand why everyone is stuck with a standing desk rather than chairs). It's not perfect, but it's a step in the right direction.

Forgive me, I did mean the design aesthetics. I loved the original sets during the 60's (or 70's when I first started watching), however, my tastes have changed and I don't find them as pleasing. Nor do I feel the costumes look as cool as they once did.

This is all subjective, of course. My tastes have changed over time and I'm willing to go with the flow. I don't think that "this is the way it should look" is the reason to keep it that way. Star Trek always was a reflection of the time it was made in, so I have no problem with retconning the design aesthetic.

Compare the visual quality of Bonanza with, say, Django Unchained, True Grit, or geez, even Tombstone from 20 years ago. Which would you bet your life savings on to be successful?

The other guy brought it up and its not a straw man. There are reasons we update the look of shows filmed in the 1960's. No one really buys into that look anymore. TOS looks like what it is.

I'm not sure why I try to explain this as some people just seem to be clinically unable to get the difference between the visual style and the effects quality. With the Discovery props they kept the same style while updating the effects quality, with the rest of the show, not so much. No one is asking for 60's effects quality, no one!

No, you can not. It would look like a cheap fan film and any updates will be met with the same thing we are seeing here. The hate at the Kelvin updates killed any hope of them trying it. So you just got a common sense modern update and they stopped trying to pander to a subset of fans who would hate it anyhow.

So do you think Discovery phaser, communicator and tricorder look like shit then?

Nope, They look pretty cool and you are now making the strawman. They tried to update the ships and uniforms, and got slammed for it. The hard core fans will never be happy with an update unless its whatever update they plan themselves. We have had a number on this forum demanding sweaters and mini dresses.

You guys had your shot with Kelvin, you attacked it and the studio has written you off. It suck for you, but that is the thing that went down. Now they try smaller updates they can get away with without looking too retro.

Mind you, I don't know why the Klingons ships look like they're from Bara-Dur 2300 A.D.

It was just the art direction they went with. I am unsure of them myself, but I do like there is more than one or two types.

The Kelvin Timeline ships are more faithful to TOS then the Discovery ships are.

DSC's interiors with the Kelvin exteriors (not the Enterprise herself) would be grand.

Yeah, they are. That was my point. Kelvin stayed close to TOS , but updated it. And the Same people who are upset DSC did not do this totally went ballistic over it. They got down right vile in their attacks and hate over it. In dong so they sent massive red flags to anyone paying attention to never do this again.

They literally did this with the attacks on Kelvin.

The looks were the best part of the Kelvin films. I think the uniforms in particular are pretty universally praised, same with the DIS props, which proves that is possible to make visual updates so that almost everyone likes them. (100 % satisfaction is of course is never possible.)

They were slammed, alot. The issue was the haters got louder than those that praised them. And the Setting got so much flak they simply wanted to avoid it. And you are right, no one will ever be totally happy. Those uniforms are not what I would have done for sure, but not a big deal for me either. I am happy they have a few looks, which has always been a big issue with trek. And Pockets! They have Pockets!

Ok, but we're not talking about "visual quality." And while having never seen any of these shows, I can say that they all probably fit in with the "wild west" aesthetic.

I'm not saying they need to make a shot for shot copy of Star Trek. Just make some effort to have it reasonably look like it exists in the same fictional time frame.

    Original uniforms had pockets.

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Did they, I could have sworn all they had were Velcro patches to stick their Phasers/Communicators on. ;)
