I wanted to have a discussion about Saru.

Personally did not care for the character. He seems to be a scaredy-cat, organic version of Data with orange rubber skin. He speaks in the same monotone. Makeup looks very fake too.

I don't understand the whole "my species was bred to detect death" thing either.

Too bad this guy didn't fall on the Klington spike. Would have been much better him than Michelle Yeoh.

It seems like a lot of the adoration people have for Doug Jones is unearned in this role. People like him because he did CGI/mo-cap characters in Hellboy and Fantastic Four. Kind of like a poor man's version of Andy Serkis

Did you enjoy the character, Phi of Pi? What are your thoughts on Saru? You don't have to agree with me. That's the beauty of this kind of board. :)

He's just another Star Trek forehead alien. I wish they'd quit doing that, we have enough of those already.

I think criticism of the character is valid, whether I agree with it or not. (So far, I don't like him, but I'm also not sure I'm supposed to, so that may be well done.)

I think criticism of and especially insults directed toward the actor, OTOH, are a bit out of bounds.

Not an insult. Everyone's raving: "Saru... it's Doug Jones, guys!!! Doug Jones is amazing. Therefore the new character is great." I don't think it's a great character.

He is kind of a lower-profile Andy Serkis-type. There, I didn't call him a poor man's Serkis this time.

I was fine with the character. I don't see him as a "fraidy-cat." He recommended withdrawing. In the end, the SF ships were outgunned. He was right.

Good grief, dude, do you have anything positive to say about this series?

I thought he was excellent in the role. And it's interesting to me to see a species that either evolved as or was bred to be prey. It's a different take on things.

I've said many times I love Burnham as a character (though not the way they sexualized her character)

    Effects were good

That's about it so far. We'll see how the series pans out

I liked Saru. He came across as a coward but I think that has to do with his species being bred to be like cattle. I'm interested to learn more about his people, who was preying on them and how the Kelpians gained their freedom. They're situation sounds a bit similar to the Tosk from DS9. Doug Jones was great as always, he does gangly ethereal creatures so well.

1: If you dislike the make up you dislike it.

2: The "sensing death" he has a danger sense, his species has a heightened sense of danger. Some Animals in Real life do that, often sensing it coming far before humans do.

Personally, I love the character and thought he did a great job. He is not "data" he is too skittish and emotional for that. It was also cool to see him running around on those hooves.

In what way is Burnham sexualised?

I like Lt Saru, I found him entertaining, more pragmatic than a coward. I also don't think he is a forehead of the week type alien either and there are limits in what the can do with CGI for a main character anyway.

I don't understand why you say he's orange. He doesn't look orange to me.

Personally, I liked Saru. I have the impression that most Star Trek alien species are always variations on the "Warrior" or "Cold Calculist" archetype. His whole "I was born to be prey" thingy sounds like a different spin for a Star Trek race and I like that. And I really loved his interactions with Burnham, I hope to see the two of them headbutting more.

I'm betting it's because they dared to...*GASP* put her in smaller clothing during a medical procedure! [Faints dead away]

Yeah. I'm lost. My sex-radar didn't even bleep once over her. Usually I pick that stuff up right away. I'm not saying she's unattractive, just... I felt no indication from the show at any point they were trying to push that aspect... Whcih to be honest is refreshing for a change. "She's beautiful... Push up the sex appeal!"

Agreed. I think Doug Jones did a great job.

I really liked the interactions between Burnham and Saru as well. I got some Spock and McCoy vibes from their interplay

I didn't really understand the love for Saru. I mean his dialog "Our species can sense the coming of death, and I sense it now" kind of felt a little corny. He's ok, but I would love to know what I missed. I guess that banter at the beginning of the first episode was the only highlight?
