The Orville on the other hand is sitting at 89%.

It's unfortunate that the show's premiere skews (somewhat substantially) older than The Orville's, because sooner or later Trek's median age needs to go down. A morbid statement in its own right, and I certainly hope all my fellow fans live to ripe old Vulcan ages of 187, but the franchise has got to keep capturing younger generations if it wants to keep boldly going.

A 1.9 isn't bad, though, and frankly it's also kind of irrelevant; many of those younger fans will have bypassed the network premiere completely because they don't do the tube anymore. I haven't had conventional television in a long time, so I watched both episodes on All-Access. And I didn't watch the live viewing, either, because I'm very conditioned against commercials these days. I waited a little while to watch 1x01 devoid of them. It's interesting because I'm sure I have archived posts here from six, seven years ago in which I said I would never mind commercials. But here we are. In 2017. Heh.

9.6 million is good eyes on the prize, but I question the episode's cut-off point. This was very much 50% of a premiere episode which happened to run 85-odd minutes.

A large percentage of hard-core Trek fans are entering the "Fuck, I just want a Corvette" years of our existence...

Yeah, I was wondering that too.

I haven't seen anything from cast or crew which would in any way drive me away.

Then again, I wasn't going in looking to hate the show, either. Perhaps that makes one more sensitive.

Yeah, in the end, they are in no way in competition with each other.

Much more interested in the All-Access numbers than the ratings.

We're likely never going to know those exact numbers.

Actually, we probably won't really know anything specific on that til CBS reports it to investors as some point.

The ratings are good enough. I predict we will get at least 15 episodes.

Or maybe they were already subscribed and (at least on the West Coast) said - why wait until *:00 PM PST when I can log in and watch it now.

That's what I did. I had the commercial version, but upgraded to the commercial-free version halfway through the first episode.

Please don't give logical, unbiased and totally plausible explanations like this. It kills the whole vibe.

I think a lot of people voted low over the AA thing... I don't think it's a realistic portrayal... I saw people on imdb giving one star because 'the rest the world gets it on netflix'.... and then there's the Axanar-camp.....

Not much competition this last week since most of the premieres start this week, but Discovery was the #7 highest rated and most viewed show last week. #1 scripted program in both measures.

Well, the approval ratings at Rotten Tomatoes seem to have settled down very quickly - 82 percent Fresh critics rating and a 65% "Liked It" rating among responding viewers.

I actually think that is a pretty solid number considering how fractured Star Trek fandom is. I think I would be worried if it trends downward in any meaningful way after this week.

Agreed. I was figuring it would have landed about 10-15 points lower.

Nah, if it's a true representation of the viewer base it's not good. There's no requirement that one be a Trek fan to vote at Rotten Tomatoes, and I'm not sure what in Discovery would be attractive to a casual viewer.

That said, it's probably not a true representation. You've got to figure that negative votes are always over-represented in a self-selected polling group.

Someone also suggested that it might represent frustration with the CBS All-Access app, but while I've encountered some nonsense with it I was able to watch both episodes when I wanted to watch them.
