Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

Since I hate 'discussing' things on Facebook, let's have a look at the fleet in episode 2. The crewman gave the names of the ships warping in (10 in total). I assumed that he listed them in their order of showing up.
The ships are:
1 Clarke
2 Shran (yay!)
3 T'Plana Hath
4 Kerala
5 Sioux (CC says Sue, but I strongly doubt that...)
6 Wright (CC again has it as Rye, not Wright)
7 Earhardt
8 Dana
9 Edison
10 Yeager (yet another one. :ack: )

At least the T'Plana Hath was later seen in more detail and corresponds with my assumption.

The Landspeeder Tpye seems to disappear and another Wings Up type appears in its place, but it could be the angle. Also, no. 9 is very hard to see, and I'm pretty sure the 'Nebula or Compact' in the second pic actually is the Nebula type (which looks like a Discovery kitbash from the front).
Europa shows up later, also 4 nacelles, but is not of the same type as Yeager (the X-Wing type). Makes around eight new classes in total. Merry christmas everyone.

PS: Something doesn't work with direct linking to images. Could a mod fix this, please? :)

Yeah, I noticed those naughty Movie/TNG era markings! And are those impulse engine nacelles? Or is Europa a 4-nacelle ship?

I think the "ugly" box+saucer is actually my favorite of the lot. Strangely reminds of some of the old Spaceflight Chronology shapes.

Damn, I knew I shoulda posted the Starships and Technology thread over here instead of in the DSC forums. Episode 3 will be here. :P

That said, thanks for the caps! :D It's great to see such a wide variety of ships on both sides - which is arguably just as realistic as kitbashing nacelle and hull types around. IMO a ship's shape is interdependent with the warp field it creates, so using interchangeable pieces should have more limitations than the wholesale swap meet designs we usually see.

I really think that Eaves or whoever designed them took some cues from the spaceflight chronology. Europa looks really nice from its front, but the ventral view is indeed a little boxy. :D
According to twitter, No. 3 and 4 of the new Discovery line from eaglemoss will be the Bird of Preyish thing the Klingons used (the fighter) and the Kerala. The "Wings Down" type actually has a very strong resemblance with the Miranda, like a possible predecessor (first pic of my second post).
Sadly, they missed the opportunity to have a Constitution get blown up (which could have been Europa). Other than that, is it me or does Europa have its briudge dome on top of the upper wing structure?
Overall, I like them even more than the Abramsverse background designs, which were arguably the best designs of the reboot 'verse.

Some really cool ships in the episode, at least on the Starfleet side. its the one element of Discovery I like without reservation. I hope we get more stuff about them, and the Discovery, both in the show and from real life sources (especially clear images of the starships in the battle).

That'll be good.

As to lack of Constitution-classes, I've already developed a headcanon that they might be further out and away from Federation territory and possibly not even close to the Shenzhou's position.

I'm thinking that the Shenzhou and the other ships in the makeshift fleet happened to be in the one point in the Galaxy where the Constitution class aren't. its the reason why the Enterprise was always the closest ship to anywhere in every situation, because every other ship was over in this area the whole time

The Europa being so "busy" is a good thing for a ship with a supposed command role. We might even think of her as a one-off variant of some more austere design, with a "flag bridge roll bar" and "fleet control tower" and whatnot...

The wings-up type is basically a beefed-up Enterprise class if the hero ship is a beefed-up Poseidon class. That is, we're seeing the in-between generation of "nacelle-uppers" and "nacelle-downers" after ENT but (long?) before the Kelvin ships. Might the registries reflect this? (Precious few numbers or letters visible here!)

Is the wings-up the only type with a TOS style saucer edge, that is, sloping the opposite way from Archer's or Georgiou's saucers? Or is even that ship just electing to fly upside down, and is essentially a no-frills counterpart to Walker?

Digging the compact type a lot. The partial/spade fwd hull reminds me of the smaller ships of ENT era computer games. Nice to have a bit of range to starship sizes, even if not a lot.

But the one labeled Miranda type is clearly just a dorsal view of the compact type, isn't it? With the telltale double pylons and all.

Possibly my pick for ugliest Federation Starship ever.

So of course I kinda like it. It's got the grunge of the Stargazer mixed with the awkwardness of DC comics' random background starship designs from the 80's.

That is a lot of new ship classes to add to the Federation fleets for this era. Aside from Eaglemoss, and possibly the folks who make Attack Wing, the shapeways people are going to have a field day making these things into game able scales for the likes of Star Fleet Battles and the old FASA roleplaying game....because people still play those, but along with the Axanar ships, want ships to populate the war with the Klingons era pre-TOS designs with things that aren't just Constitution-class kitbashes.

Who designed all of those ships, and what direction did they get? Should be assume some are older and newer designs for 2156?

John Eaves was one of the designers. He certainly was for the Shenzhou/Walker-class design.

Most of those ship designs on both sides are fugly. I am fairly confident that we have an Intrepid situation here with these new ships - with the exception of the Europa and the two hero ships, these ships were not labeled. This is partially confirmed by Ben Robinson who said the Kerala model was not labeled with this name. (Europa is on the way but issues 3 and 4 are the Kerala (you didn't see her named) and The Bird-of-Prey - which are the little fighters.) He further said that there were more new models in the first two episodes then in the entire run of TNG.

I am already pining for the older Klingon designs. They were things of beauty compared to these abominations.

Where did John Eaves say he would write about these new ships for StarTrek.com?
