Worf in DS9, a good idea?

What do TNG people think? Do you think that it was a good idea for Worf to join the DS9 crew?

I might get some hate for saying this, but...
I don't think it was a good idea.
Worf is a TNG character, it only feels like a trick to lure TNG fans to watch DS9.

Me being a massive TNG fan, Worf just feels out of place there. Picard in the pilot episode was enough of TNG characters in that show, DS9 should've standed on its own feet.

 

I never wanted Worf on DS9. I was quite bummed when it happened. That said, I think they did a lot of good work with him...Worf was a better character on DS9 than he was on TNG.

 

I was so unhappy when it was announced and it took me a solid season or two to warm up to DS9 Worf, but looking back I love it. It was great for DS9, but it was also great for the Worf. The whole TNG-through-DS9 arc of the character is much stronger and more compelling than if we had him only on TNG. And DS9 brings his character to such a perfect place of rest, becoming the Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire.

(Then Nemesis ruins it. But what didn't Nemesis ruin?)

I was never a huge Worf fan, but on DS9 he did have some interesting stories and was a logical fit with the rest of the crew--of course there were also some very dull Klingon-centric episodes, but they can't be avoided. Without Worf on DS9 however would we have gotten to know and love Martok or finally see crazy-eyes Gowron finally get his comeuppance?

@Sakonna how I deal with Nemesis' treatment of Worf is to say that he is still the Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire, but after building up weeks of annual leave was forced to take it and did so to coincide with the Riker-Troi wedding. He then took the opportunity to return to active duty to keep his training certifications valid, allowing him to do more than simply fly a desk on Qo'noS. After the E-E returned to dry-dock for repairs he remained aboard for another week or so before returning to his diplomatic posting--seeing as how his actions whilst serving on DS9 would see him never command a ship of his own and he'd come to embrace the challenge of being a Klingon, raised by humans, trained by Starfleet, disowned by the Empire, adopted by the House of Martok, now serving as the highest ranking Federation civilian official on his homeworld.

 

I think he was way more interesting and had more character development in DS9 than in TNG

 

That's pretty good! Of course now I want to know what happened to whoever was filling the Ent-E security post at that time.

Probably went to a conference and got abducted and replaced by an evil alien duplicate...

I loved him on DS9. I think his character got more development and became more interesting on DS9.

 

I agree but I wish he had married a Klingon instead of Jadzia. I thought that part was really over the top and I never liked them as a couple.

 

I like Michael Dorn, very much and would've loved to have seen his association with STAR TREK continue. That's just me. I think he's cool. But I would've much preferred it that he'd have played another character ... a Human, perhaps, or even some other species. Anything would've been better than what we ended up getting. I just hate Worf on STAR TREK: Deep Space Nine. I really feel it was too much "Worf."

The appeal of DS9 is that all of the Universe is coming to call, rather than having to travel out to it. And what did we get? Klingon-themed shows, galore, once Worf signed up. Enough with the Klingons! They had become cartoonish, long before this, but now? They're lame, uncool ... kind of neutered; a joke, really. And I cannot stand Michael Westmore's forehead designs, anymore. Even Worf's headpiece ended up looking very fake. It looks very cool in TNG's Second Season, where it seemed more subtle, somehow, whilst keeping him looking stern and proud. Not anymore, thanks to DS9! The laughably thick eyebrows, the bloated nose piece, the absurd wigs ... there's no end to it.

Worf became a much better-developed and rounded character on DSN than he did on TNG. Witness they bring him back to the TNG fold for the movies and he mostly is used as a punchline for really bad jokes. Now THAT was a bad idea.

 

I liked Worf much better as a command officer than as Security Chief. When they first announced they were bringing him over, I thought he would inhabit the same role on the other show. Thankfully, by elevating him to command, he became a much more interesting and rounded character.

 

Why a bad idea? Great character and it made DS9 a much better show.

 

The show probably turned out equally as good as it would have been if they had gone in a different direction.

 

It's interesting how TNG, DS9, and VOY all had a key cast change for season 4, which gets you to what is seen as "the" cast of the show... when you think of the TNG cast you envision the core 7 and not Wesley, when you think of DS9 you see the lineup of 9 that includes Worf and Jadzia, when you think of VOY it's Janeway, Seven, the Doctor, Torres, and some uninteresting men.

DS9 was so smart to let Worf be an addition, rather than a replacement. Can you imagine if they pulled the VOY budget cutting move and axed, I dunno, Bashir or Quark in favor of Worf? The whole thing would not have gone nearly as well.

 

I wouldn't have missed Bashir.

 

Honestly, when I got to thinking about TNG to DS9 crossover characters like Worf & O'Brien, I got to thinking about "Dr." Ogawa in TNG 's Parallels, & thought, "Hey! I might have liked her being the DS9 doctor"... but then again, the show would then start looking kind of like "After M*A*S*H"

 

Worf serving under Picard never made sense to me. Don't know why really, I suppose it seemed he would suggest something to Picard and Picard would do something else.

 

Worf on TNG was Picard reminding him about how he should always put Starfleet first and restrain his Klingon self. Sisko (to a degree) allowed him to be more Klingon. Hell, the man would chuck some bloodwine with and would want to learn how to cook bloodpie.

Worf was way more suited to DS9. He was actually a Klingon, instead of a humand with a ridged forehead and a bad temper. He was much more accepted as part of the whole, instead of just someone that was there and had to be taken into account. Only Troi truly accepted him for him. Riker was mostly curious about The Klingon instead of Worf.
