Discovery is being “overshadowed" by The Orville

That's pretty much how I felt about the first episode (the only one I've watched). The problem for me is, I have so many other things I think are better than "just OK" that I can spend my limited free time on. I'm not going to spend an hour on something I don't think is terrible but I also don't care about. If I hear it gets a lot better maybe I'll check it out again.

 

Well, if you go to any of the CBS sites (the Network one allows people to stream their CBS Network shows for free with no signup or login required) - there's Discovery ads all over - and people do go to those sites. And I'm seeing Banner Ads for ST: D on many sites as I browse around (but to be fair I use Google Chrome and search a lot of Star trek stuff, so I'm sure my cookies are responsible - but if someone even googles 'Star Trek' once - I'm sure they'll see those ads too.

And one has to use the internet in some form to get/sub to CBSAA - so those ads will point interested people towards CBSAA.

 

You seem to be forgetting a rather important fact.

I still think CBS will air the premiere a couple of times to hook people. If they don't get the numbers they want for CBSAA, in about 6 months to a year (before season 2) they will air season 1 on TV to hook more people and it will be full of watch season 2 on CBSAA.

Being a network, they have a lot more options than Netflix or Hulu to get revenue for this show and I expect them to leverage everything in their power to milk every penny they can. Whether that be DVD sales, syndication, putting it on regular network at a later date or whatever.

 

Well, if we're also to accept the current trend, most people DVR and skip through TV ads (if they watch TV) -- so, I guess that makes any discussion about 'Marketing irrelevant, eh?

 

I'm very curious if The Orville pilot will have more viewers than the Star Trek Discovery pilot. As Trump would say, that would be...sad!

 

I just set up CBS All Access and watched all the DSC extras / featurettes on my 109 inch HD projection screen.

F#ck me, I'm ready. This is so awesome!

I feel bad for all the negative, skeptical people. I mean that honestly. There was literally nothing I saw in the featurettes or trailers that turned me off. I am so excited for this weekend. I can remember being a kid and getting that feeling as the premier of TNG approached. I can't imagine denying myself that like so many people seem determined to do.

You only live once. F#ck...why go through life that frigging jaded about something that's supposed to bring you joy?

It's the first time in 30 years I've recaptured that feeling. It's pretty damn special.

Why? I tend to think people don't always want grimdark and war in every show. Sometimes people just want to sit down and forget about the world for a while.

 

Don't feel bad for me. I'm past getting excited for something simply because it has the "Star Trek" label. Like everything else, they are going to have to sell me on it being worth my time.

Right now, nothing about Discovery has fired my imagination the way TOS and, to a lesser degree, TNG did. I'm sure part of it is getting older, but part of it is that it doesn't seem to really be wanting to stand on its own and that it is chasing the same grimdark stories that every other sci-fi drama is. I don't need fifteen episodes of Star Trek's greatest hits as played by Marilyn Manson all in one place.

Delving deeper into canon sounds boring as fuck. As does war with the Klingons.

I hope I'm wrong.

I'm sorry, but I do genuinely feel bad.

If we can't have those magical moments of excitement anymore because we're so jaded and programmed to be skeptical of everything, what's the point?

I personally live for those moments.

Coaching my first game each season, sending my kids off to the first day of school, etc. If I already believe my team is mediocre and may have a rough season, why bother coaching them up? If I figure (because I'm older or whatever that's supposed to mean) that my kids are just going to get bullied and be bad at math...where's the joy in that moment?

Sorry man, that ain't how I chose to live. Moments like this are the payoff for all the hard and mundane things you need to do otherwise. Now, what follows is real life and we will all figure out what reality is as the football season, school year, and DSC moves along and to be successful me must react accordingly.

But, I dont go into a football season without believing in my players and the work we've put in. I don't kick off a school year without having faith that I've raised my kids to do well. And I don't assume the one entertainment franchise I actually care about is going to suck right out of the gate after a decade of dormancy.

If I ever get that way...time to cash in my chips.

For a franchise that everyone demands and expects to promote hope, humor, and positivity...we sure have fans who can't get there themselves.

Phew! Good to see we made it so far, without accusations of racism directed at those of us who aren't too excited for STD!

And personally I take an optimistic outlook. If STD doesn't get the viewers they need, and is a huge flop, if The Orville continues getting good ratings, it only makes it much more likely that CBS will try to do another, more optimistic and light, Star Trek show.

 

Perhaps because the show reflects on something that is desirable but hasn't been attained yet?

 

It isn't about being programmed, it is about what I am seeing/hearing about the show.

 

I'm genuinely sorry for you, that you feel bad when other folks don't share all of your enthusiasms.

I have plenty of "magical moments of enthusiasm" - even from watching TV shows. Discovering Westworld was a recent one. Getting back to topic, so is The Orville.
