I know this will never happen but I think a recut version of Nemesis would work. Nemesis has flaws but I don't hate it as much as many fans do. There's some of the best ship battle sequences in all of Trek. It seemed like the director cut a lot of character moments out to make room for the action.
The problem is, besides it being Nemesis, is that the character moments that were in the movie just didn't work. The space battle sequences were nicely done, but there isn't much you can do for a movie that had a subpar script to begin with. Couple that with the cast not liking Stuart Baird much (he would talk to an actor and always refer to them by their character name, not their real name), the movie just didn't work.
Baird is a career editor. I wonder if it's just coincidental that NEM was the last movie he ever directed (so far). Kor
I like most of the deleted scenes in that film and including them instead of some of that mindless action would have certainly improved the film. But I really don't think that it would have been nearly enough to actually salvage it.
I agree. The movie, at its core (the script and direction) were not well-executed to begin with. There really is no amount of reworking from what was made (deleted scenes and so on) to really make it a better movie, at least markedly better.
Stuart Baird did not really understand Star Trek, seemed unfamiliar with the characters and did not seem to care for it much. it shows. Nemesis did have a nice ballt at the end, but it also had 'action' sequences which did not make a lot of sense, the biggest being the dune buggy chase at the beginning, which seemed to be spliced in from a different movie altogether. i still watch the film but hit fast forward a lot.
I would love to see another cut of the movie. It would make the movie a little bit better. But I wouldn't expect it to fix most of the problems I have with the movie.
I would like to see them scrap the whole thing and redo it from scratch, starting from the ground up with a completely different script and using a director that actually gives a crap about the project in and of itself rather than just as a shot at getting more directing jobs (which apparently never happened, BTW). Alas, there isn't much chance of that happening. Kor
The only reason Baird got the Nemesis gig was because of the last-minute re-edit jobs he did on Mission: Impossible 2 and Tomb Raider, both of which made a fuckton of money for Paramount. They promised him a high-profile directing gig as a thank-you. That gig turned out to be Nemesis. Baird's a world-class editor, one of the best in history, but I think even he recognizes his limitations.
Not everyone can come out of the editing room like Robert Wise or David Lean and hit the ground running.
My only desire is to see the whole "Deck 29" issue. I just pretend to hear it as a higher deck number but it'd be nice if it was changed.
Honestly, I don't blame Baird. Or at least, less than I blame Logan, Berman, Stewart and Spiner...and whoever had final cut on the film (I doubt it was Baird).
The only recut version of Nemesis I'd like to see is the one where every remaining print is cut up into tiny pieces and shoveled into a furnace.
A recut of Nemesis...hmm.....good idea..actually..lose the whole "Data dies" bullshit, cut the whole "mind rape"-junk, and please throw the "Troi crashes the ship again" out of the window too. Even better...cut it in a way that it´s B4 who dies. Put in some new CGI and actually show the Titan.
I never understood this urge for fans to recut movies in order to "fix" them. Enjoy Nemesis (or don't) for what it is.
Most likely the producer, Berman in this case. Unless there was some other higher-up with his hands in the pot too. Kor
This. Editing a movie that was compete shit to begin with only makes it a bit less than complete shit. It doesn't magically make it a better movie.
I love fanedits. The Jack Marshall "Episode Pilot" recut of Star Trek V is ingenius. Here's a link to some info about Nemesis ones. https://ifdb.fanedit.org/fanedit-search/tag/originalmovietitle/star-trek-nemesis/?criteria=2
