Future of Paramount includes Star Trek tentpole

It was money they spent that they would need to recoup. So I imagine it does count. I know that the spending for Phase II and other aborted 70's projects were billed to TMP. And the various aborted Superman projects were factored into the cost of Superman Returns.

 

if star trek beyond goes down like superman returns, we're in trouble.

 

Very similar box office to budget, though superman returns made a little more money.

 

One would hope that if Star Trek 4 is made, that perhaps the budget won't need to be as gigantic if they already spent money on pre-production of the movie that eventually became Star Trek Beyond. Perhaps some unused elements from the Orci script. Concept art, story ideas, set designs, could possibly be adapted and used.

 

It seems pretty unlikely that we get a Star Trek 4. The timing of the ST4 announcement was done for PR reasons IMO, not because they had actual concrete plans for it.

That said, it's not impossible. There are times when a movie underperforms but still gets a sequal. Paramount is privy to numbers we don't know about. If STB is doing well in streaming, getting a lot of interest, & Discovery does well, Paramount might consider making ST4 with a reduced budget. The problem with that is that this cast is getting more and more expensive.

 

Huahua is unhappy with Paramount; that doesn't bode well for a future Trek film

 

given that they financed only star trek beyond, i think that's immaterial to the franchise writ large.

that would likely (hopefully) not happen as it would be messy with the WGA and it's not clear what orci's relationship with the studio is at this point, probably not good.

 

I wish Star Trek Beyond had the secondary revenue of Superman Returns.

But it's essential to the wellbeing of Paramount.

This is the article I was talking about a few pages back. It just seems to be non superhero sequels in general that are having a tough time of it lately. I can't believe how badly War for the planet of the Apes has done, it's barely gonna get half the worldwide haul of Dawn. At least beyond didn't have that bad a drop off.

 

I was looking up the box office of the Planet of the Apes movies, they seem a good comparison for Trek from what I can see, even though they have good reviews and people seem to like the movies, they've had diminishing returns. I reckon the over abundance of super hero movies and now Star Wars just means every other tent pole is struggling.

 

Dawn did massively better than Rise at the domestic and international box office, I wouldn't go as far as to say they're diminishing returns, but War's performance has really surprised me.

 

Well RAMA... now you know, Beyond made a loss and a big one at that!

 

That's what happens when you cater to the fans instead of telling the best story possible.

 

It certainly made a profit. That much I'm sure. The article doesn't go in depth with "ancillaries" and I doubt they went as in depth as I did. In fact, the $50 million number is the one they were using in September of 2016, so I know it's wrong. The rest is speculation, which I am only too happy to indulge in.

 

Interestingly, ST4's status on IMDB has been changed to: "In development"

Well, even if facts are presented to you and you still hold on to your believes... fine, but discussions have very little point then.

 

If you lose the fans, you have nothing. Star Trek will always be a niche market in my opinion and that's fine. Cater to the fans, cos the general audience will never jump on board, at least not in the way they do on Star Wars etc.
